Chapter 5: The Missing Years
My father stood across the street for almost a minute without moving.
Then the woman beside him opened the black case.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
"Get away from the window.""
I pulled free.
"What is in that case?""
"I don't know.""
"You know who she is.""
"I've heard the name.""
"Who is Rebecca?""
He looked at me.
"Someone who was supposed to be dead.""
The words chilled me.
Lily stirred in my arms.
I carried her downstairs.
Vanessa was standing in the kitchen with the folder still open.
She looked toward the window.
"Is he here?""
"Yes.""
She exhaled.
"Then it's time.""
I stared at her.
"Time for what?""
She looked at Daniel.
"Tell her.""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
Vanessa stepped toward him.
"You don't get to decide anymore.""
He glared at her.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
"I know exactly what I'm doing.""
She pointed toward the street.
"That man has waited thirty-one years.""
Then she looked at me.
"And your mother spent her entire life making sure you would survive long enough to hear the truth.""
I sat down.
"Start talking.""
Vanessa pulled out a chair.
Daniel remained standing.
"I met Daniel four years ago," she said.
"I know.""
"No. You don't.""
She looked at him.
"He didn't tell me he was married.""
I looked at Daniel.
"That's not true.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"He told me his marriage was over.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Because it was.""
"You were still sleeping in Mara's bed.""
He said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
"I believed him.""
I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
"Then I found the trust.""
She opened the folder.
"I was working on an acquisition for Daniel's company. One of the subsidiaries had old records that hadn't been digitized. I found a set of documents with Mara's name.""
She pushed a page toward me.
"I asked Daniel about it.""
"What did he say?""
"He told me you were going to inherit a large amount of money.""
"How large?""
"Enough that I understood why he was interested.""
Daniel snapped, "That's a lie.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"You told me if I helped you get Mara declared unstable, the trust would be easier to control.""
My stomach tightened.
Daniel's voice dropped.
"I never said that.""
"You did.""
"You're trying to save yourself.""
"Of course I am.""
She looked at me.
"I made copies because I became afraid of him.""
I looked down at Lily.
"What does any of this have to do with my father?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"The trust wasn't created by Daniel's family.""
"Then who created it?""
"Your father.""
I stared.
"What?""
"Your father made the money.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not all of it.""
"Most of it.""
I looked at the documents.
"My father was a businessman?""
"He was an engineer," Daniel said.
I turned to him.
"Then why was he worth millions?""
"Because he invented something.""
"What?""
Daniel's face tightened.
"A medical technology.""
"What kind?""
"An implant.""
I frowned.
"For what?""
He didn't answer.
Vanessa did.
"Heart patients.""
I looked at her.
"Your father developed an early device that helped regulate heart rhythm. A private company bought the rights.""
I stared at the trust statement.
"Then why did my mother say he disappeared?""
"Because he did.""
"Why?""
Daniel finally sat down.
"Because my father tried to steal the patent.""
The words hung between us.
I looked at him.
"And my father stopped him?""
"Yes.""
"Then what happened?""
"Your father vanished.""
"Who made him vanish?""
Daniel's eyes met mine.
"My father.""
I couldn't speak.
He continued.
"He used a private investigator. He threatened your mother. He convinced everyone your father had fled.""
"And you knew?""
"I learned the truth when I was twenty-nine.""
"You were twenty-nine?""
"Yes.""
"You could have told me.""
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of what my father would do.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"How did you find my father?""
"I didn't.""
"Then who did?""
She glanced at Daniel.
"He did.""
I turned.
Daniel's face had gone pale.
"Three months ago, I found him.""
"Three months?""
"The week Lily was born.""
My heart stopped.
"You found my father the week I gave birth.""
"Yes.""
"And you still didn't tell me.""
"I was going to.""
"When?""
He looked at Lily.
"After I secured the trust.""
I felt sick.
"So that's why you were at the hospital.""
"I wasn't trying to hurt you.""
"You were trying to get my inheritance.""
"No.""
"Then why did you need the trust secured?""
"Because your father wanted it back.""
I stared.
"How could he want back money he gave me?""
"He claimed the trust was created under fraud.""
"What fraud?""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
She nodded.
"Your mother wasn't supposed to be the beneficiary.""
My eyebrows drew together.
"Then who was?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"You.""
"I was?""
"You were supposed to inherit everything when you turned thirty-five.""
I blinked.
"That's next year.""
"Yes.""
"Then why did the trust activate when I had Lily?""
"It didn't.""
I looked at Daniel.
"You lied.""
He lowered his head.
"I needed you to believe it had.""
My heart pounded.
"So Lily wasn't the trigger.""
"No.""
"Then what was?""
"Your thirty-fifth birthday.""
I stood.
"Why did you need me to have a baby?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Vanessa did.
"Because your mother changed the trust.""
I looked at her.
"She added a condition.""
"What condition?""
"If Mara married before thirty-five, her husband would become co-trustee.""
My breath caught.
Daniel had married me at thirty.
I looked at him.
"You became co-trustee.""
"Yes.""
"So you didn't need Lily.""
"No.""
"You needed me married.""
"Yes.""
"Then why leave now?""
His eyes dropped.
"Because I wanted control before the trust matured.""
I felt like I was watching a stranger.
Five years.
Every anniversary.
Every dinner.
Every kiss.
A calculation.
Then I remembered something.
"Wait.""
I looked at the paperwork.
"If you're co-trustee, why does the divorce matter?""
Daniel went still.
I knew there was another piece.
"Why?""
He didn't answer.
"Why does divorcing me before my birthday help you?""
He finally said,
"Because the trust has a clause.""
"What clause?""
"If the marriage ends due to Mara's incapacity, the co-trustee retains control.""
I stared.
"So that's what the declaration is for.""
He nodded.
"You were going to have me declared mentally unstable.""
"Only temporarily.""
I laughed in disbelief.
"Temporarily?""
"Until the trust transferred.""
"How long?""
"I don't know.""
"Months?""
"Possibly.""
I shook my head.
"You were going to take my child, my house, my money, and convince a court that I couldn't care for myself.""
He looked at me.
"I didn't want it to happen this way.""
"But you made it happen.""
He didn't deny it.
A knock sounded at the door.
Everyone froze.
Another knock.
Three slow taps.
Vanessa whispered,
"He's here.""
I carried Lily into the living room.
Daniel stepped toward the door.
I blocked him.
"No.""
"Mara.""
"I'll open it.""
"You don't know what he'll do.""
I stared at him.
"Neither do you.""
I unlocked the door.
The man on the porch looked older than the photograph.
His face was lined.
His shoulders were slightly bent.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
My eyes.
He looked at Lily.
Then at me.
His lips trembled.
"Mara.""
I couldn't speak.
He swallowed.
"I'm sorry.""
I stared at the man I'd spent thirty-one years believing had abandoned me.
"You were alive.""
"Yes.""
"All this time?""
"Yes.""
"You knew about me?""
"Every day.""
"Why didn't you come back?""
He looked over my shoulder.
At Daniel.
Then his expression changed.
"Because I was trying to keep you alive.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"You should leave.""
My father looked at him.
"I've waited a long time to say this.""
He reached inside his coat.
Daniel's face went pale.
"Don't.""
My father pulled out a small envelope.
He handed it to me.
"Your mother wanted you to have this when you became a mother.""
I stared at the envelope.
"My mother gave it to you?""
"No.""
"Then how?""
"She mailed it to me before she died.""
I looked at the handwriting.
My mother's handwriting.
Again.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
My mother holding me as a baby.
And behind us stood another woman.
Young.
Blonde.
Smiling.
I didn't recognize her.
But Vanessa did.
She gasped.
"Rebecca.""
My father closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
I looked at him.
"Who is Rebecca?""
He answered with four words.
"Your mother's first daughter.""
My blood went cold.
I stared at the photograph.
The woman smiling behind my mother had the same eyes as me.
The same eyes Lily had inherited from me.
Then my father whispered,
"She is also Daniel's biological mother.""
Daniel stumbled backward.
May you like
Nobody moved.
And suddenly, the entire story of our marriage became something much darker than betrayal.
