Chapter 2: The Nurse
I called the number back.
It didn't work.
I tried again.
Nothing.
Daniel was still standing in the living room.
"Who was that?""
I looked at him.
"A nurse.""
His face changed.
"What nurse?""
"She said she was Lily's nurse.""
"When?""
"At the hospital.""
Daniel swallowed.
I watched the movement in his throat.
"You heard what she said.""
"I heard.""
"What happened at the hospital?""
He walked toward me.
"Mara, there are things you're remembering incorrectly.""
I stared at him.
"I was there.""
"You were heavily medicated.""
"I gave birth to our daughter. I wasn't unconscious.""
"You were exhausted.""
"Daniel.""
He stopped.
I lowered my voice.
"What happened?""
He looked toward the stairs.
Vanessa was gone.
Her suitcase had disappeared from the entryway.
"Not here," he said.
I almost laughed.
"Not here?""
"Our daughter is sleeping.""
"Exactly.""
I held Lily tighter.
"So tell me quietly.""
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
"I don't want to do this tonight.""
"You brought divorce papers tonight.""
He closed his eyes.
"You want the truth?""
"Yes.""
He looked at me.
"When Lily was born, there was a complication.""
"I know.""
"You lost a lot of blood.""
"I know.""
"The doctors were worried.""
"I know.""
"Vanessa was at the hospital.""
My stomach dropped.
"Why?""
He hesitated.
"She came because she was worried about me.""
I stared at him.
"She was worried about you?""
"You were in surgery.""
"What surgery?""
"You don't remember?""
"No.""
"After the delivery, you started hemorrhaging.""
I remembered fragments.
White lights.
Someone shouting.
A nurse pushing my shoulders down.
Daniel's hand disappearing from mine.
Then darkness.
"When did Vanessa arrive?""
Daniel looked away.
"Before Lily was born.""
My mouth went dry.
"She was there while I was in labor?""
"She didn't come inside.""
"Where was she?""
"Outside.""
"With you?""
He said nothing.
I felt Lily's fingers move against my gown.
"Daniel.""
"Yes.""
The word was barely audible.
I stepped backward.
"You left me in labor to talk to her?""
"No.""
"You said you had to take a phone call.""
"I did.""
"Was that her?""
He didn't answer.
I didn't need him to.
I sat down slowly on the couch.
My legs felt weak.
"How long?""
"What?""
"How long were you sleeping with her?""
Daniel's face tightened.
"Mara, this isn't productive.""
"How long?""
"Months.""
The room went silent.
I looked toward the staircase.
"Months.""
"Yes.""
"During my pregnancy?""
He didn't speak.
"How many months?""
He looked at the floor.
"Eight.""
I laughed.
A horrible little sound.
"Eight months.""
"Mara—"
"You slept with her for eight months.""
"Yes.""
"While I was pregnant.""
"Yes.""
"While I was carrying your child.""
"Yes.""
I nodded slowly.
There was something strangely peaceful about hearing the number.
Eight months.
Now the memories had dates.
Daniel's first business trip.
The night he said he was too tired to come to my ultrasound.
The anniversary dinner he canceled.
The hotel receipt I'd found in his jacket and convinced myself belonged to a client.
All of it had a shape now.
All of it had a name.
Vanessa.
I looked down at Lily.
"Did she know about the baby?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Did she know we were married?""
"Yes.""
"Did she know I was pregnant?""
"Yes.""
My voice cracked.
"And she still came to the hospital?""
"She wasn't there for you.""
I looked up.
He immediately regretted the sentence.
"What did you say?""
"Nothing.""
"No. Say it again.""
"I said she wasn't there for you.""
I stood.
"You brought the woman who slept with you for eight months to the hospital while I was giving birth?""
"She came because I was falling apart.""
"And I wasn't?""
He said nothing.
"I was bleeding.""
"Mara—"
"I was bleeding.""
My voice rose.
"Lily almost died.""
"I know.""
"I almost died.""
"I know.""
"And you were comforting Vanessa?""
He stepped toward me.
"She thought I was going to leave her.""
I stared at him.
"She thought you were going to leave her?""
"Yes.""
"Daniel, I was your wife.""
"I know.""
"I was having your baby.""
"I know.""
"You were supposed to be worried about me.""
"I was.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You weren't.""
He looked exhausted.
For a moment, he seemed like the man I had married.
Then I remembered the suitcase.
The ring.
The folder.
And he disappeared again.
"Where did you sleep that night?"" I asked.
"In the hospital.""
"With me?""
"Mostly.""
"Mostly?""
He looked away.
I waited.
"Daniel.""
He sighed.
"I went downstairs.""
"Why?""
"To talk to Vanessa.""
"When?""
"After Lily was born.""
I felt dizzy.
"What did you talk about?""
He didn't answer.
"What did you promise her?""
His silence was answer enough.
I sat back down.
Lily began to fuss.
I rocked her gently.
Daniel watched us.
"You need to understand something," he said.
I looked up.
"I don't hate you.""
I almost smiled.
"That's supposed to make me feel better?""
"I'm serious.""
"You don't hate me.""
"No.""
"You just don't love me.""
He looked down.
"Not anymore.""
There it was.
The sentence I'd been dreading.
Yet hearing it didn't destroy me.
It clarified something.
I had spent months trying to save a marriage that had already become a corpse.
I had been fighting for a man who had already moved on.
Daniel walked toward the kitchen.
"I'll make you some tea.""
I stared at him.
"Don't.""
He stopped.
"I don't want anything from you.""
He nodded.
Then his phone buzzed.
He checked the screen.
I watched his expression change.
"Who is it?""
"No one.""
"Let me see.""
"It's private.""
I laughed.
"Private?""
He slipped the phone into his pocket.
"Mara, we're getting divorced.""
"Then you shouldn't be afraid to show me.""
His jaw tightened.
"You don't get access to my phone.""
"After eight months of cheating?""
"No.""
I stood.
"Then go upstairs.""
"What?""
"Go get your things.""
"I live here.""
"Not anymore.""
He stared at me.
"This is my house.""
"No.""
I held up the divorce folder.
"Apparently it's your house.""
He took a step toward me.
"You can't kick me out.""
"You're right.""
I nodded.
"I can't.""
Then I looked toward the staircase.
"But I can ask you not to sleep in my bedroom.""
He said nothing.
He walked upstairs.
I waited until I heard the bedroom door close.
Then I opened the divorce folder again.
This time, I read every page.
There was a custody proposal.
Daniel wanted joint custody.
But the proposed schedule was strange.
Lily would spend alternating weekends with him.
That made sense.
What didn't make sense was the section about "household support.""
It stated that a "third-party caregiver" would assist with Lily's transition between homes.
I read the paragraph twice.
Then a name appeared.
*Vanessa Cole.*
I stopped breathing.
The woman who had just moved into my home was already listed as part of my daughter's custody arrangement.
I turned the page.
There was an attached declaration.
I started reading.
The first sentence made my hands shake.
> "I have concerns about Mara Hayes's emotional stability and ability to provide consistent care for the child.""
I stared at the words.
Daniel was building a case against me.
And suddenly every comment he'd made about me being emotional, exhausted, unstable, overwhelmed—
They weren't insults.
They were evidence.
Evidence he had been collecting.
I heard footsteps upstairs.
Then Daniel called down.
"Mara?""
I didn't answer.
He appeared on the staircase.
"Where are you?""
I folded the papers.
He looked at me.
"What are you reading?""
I smiled for the first time that night.
It wasn't a happy smile.
It was the smile of someone who had finally stopped being confused.
"Your plan.""
He went still.
"You weren't supposed to see that.""
"Why?""
"Mara—"
"Why wasn't I supposed to see the part where Vanessa helps raise my daughter?""
His face hardened.
"Because you're not thinking clearly.""
"No.""
I looked at the folder.
"For the first time, I am.""
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Daniel froze.
I looked at the clock.
8:16 p.m.
"Are you expecting someone?""
"No.""
Another knock.
This time, louder.
Daniel walked toward the door.
I followed.
He opened it.
A man in a dark coat stood on the porch.
He looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
"Mrs. Hayes?""
"Yes?""
He handed me a large envelope.
"I was instructed to give this to you personally.""
"By whom?""
The man glanced at Daniel.
Then back at me.
"Your attorney.""
I frowned.
"I don't have an attorney.""
He looked confused.
"Apparently you do now.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
At the top was a name.
*Elizabeth Hayes.*
My mother's name.
My mother had been dead for nine years.
May you like
And beneath her name was a date.
The date Lily was born.
