Chapter 9: The Father Behind Every Lie

Daniel replayed the final thirty seconds of the recording eleven times.

Every time, the same words emerged from the speakers.

If Richard discovers what you know about his real father, none of us will survive.

Arthur Bennett's voice was unmistakable.

Daniel had heard that voice every Sunday morning when his father called him downstairs for breakfast. He had heard it at school concerts, graduation ceremonies, and the hospital bedside where Arthur had taken his final breath.

Or so Daniel had believed.

Now even his memories felt unreliable.

He stood in the living room, staring at the frozen image of his mother on the laptop screen.

“His real father,” he whispered.

“What did she mean?””

Gloria sat beside him, her wedding ring catching the light from the screen.

“I don't know.””

“Richard was Thomas's son. The DNA report proved it.””

“Then why would Arthur say that?””

Daniel turned toward Jessica.

“Did you know about this?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. I swear.””

“Your father was investigating Arthur. You had those photographs. You've been following this family for years. How could you not know?””

Jessica flinched.

“Because every time I got close to the truth, someone took the evidence away from me. I didn't even know that recording existed until now.””

Daniel looked away.

He wanted someone to blame. Someone he could confront, someone who could look him in the eyes and explain why his mother had died terrified and alone.

But the woman he wanted to ask was gone.

And the man who had raised him had apparently helped conceal her final secret.

Gloria reached for his hand.

“Daniel, listen to me. Whatever this means, we need to find out before Richard does.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What if he's already seen the recording?””

The answer arrived with a knock at the front door.

Three sharp strikes.

Everyone froze.

Daniel moved toward the hallway.

Gloria caught his wrist.

“Wait.””

Another knock.

Then a man's voice came through the door.

“Mr. Bennett? This is Detective Harris. We need to speak with you about an incident at the estate outside the city.””

Daniel exchanged a look with Gloria.

Evelyn had contacted the authorities, but none of them had expected the police to arrive so quickly.

Daniel opened the door.

Two officers stood on the doorstep.

The older one held up his identification.

“Mr. Bennett, we're investigating a complaint concerning trespassing and the unlawful recording of private property. We'd like to ask you a few questions.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Who filed the complaint?””

“Richard Bennett.””

Behind him, Jessica whispered, “Of course he did.””

Detective Harris glanced past Daniel into the house.

“Is Jessica Miller here?””

Jessica stepped into view.

“Yes.””

“We'd like to speak with you as well.””

Gloria moved beside her.

“Before you do anything, we have evidence of a man being held against his will.””

The detective's expression barely changed.

“What man?””

“Thomas Cole. He's been confined at a private estate for nearly thirty years.””

For the first time, the officer looked genuinely surprised.

Then he took out his notebook.

“Can you prove that?””

Gloria nodded toward the laptop.

“We have a recording from inside the property. We have photographs, documents, and evidence suggesting that the owner has been concealing his identity.””

“Then I suggest you provide those materials to your solicitor and allow us to investigate.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Someone threatened my wife. My mother died under suspicious circumstances. We have evidence that someone may have tampered with her car. And you're here because my uncle claims we trespassed?””

“I'm here because a complaint was filed. The other allegations will be examined through the proper channels.””

The detective's tone was professional, but something about his wording made Gloria uneasy.

She remembered Eleanor's letter.

Don't trust the police officers who signed my accident report.

“Detective Harris,” she said carefully, “did you work on Eleanor Bennett's death?””

He looked at her.

“Why do you ask?””

“Because her accident report may have been falsified.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Harris closed his notebook.

“This conversation is over until you've obtained legal representation.””

He turned toward the door.

As he stepped outside, Gloria noticed a small silver insignia on his belt.

The same symbol appeared on the documents Jessica had recovered from Arthur's storage unit.

A circle divided by a narrow vertical line.

Gloria's stomach tightened.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

He followed her gaze.

The detective was already walking toward his car.

But before he got inside, he glanced back at the house.

His eyes settled on the laptop.

Then he made a phone call.

Daniel closed the door.

“We're leaving.””

Evelyn Price met them at a secure office that afternoon.

When Gloria described the detective's reaction and showed her the insignia, Evelyn's face became grave.

“I've seen that symbol before,” she said.

“It's associated with a private security organization that handled contracts for the Bennett family.””

“Why would a detective have it?”” Daniel asked.

“I don't know. But I'm going to verify his employment history before we assume anything.””

Jessica placed the memory card on the table.

“We need to identify the man in the second video.””

Evelyn watched the recording again.

Arthur's face appeared briefly as he spoke to Eleanor.

Then the video ended.

Evelyn leaned back.

“I think the key is the phrase 'real father.'' We have three possibilities. Richard's paternity was misrepresented, Arthur's paternity was misrepresented, or Eleanor was referring to someone else entirely.””

Daniel rubbed his temples.

“That's helpful.””

“I know it isn't what you want to hear. But we need to separate what we know from what we suspect.””

Gloria opened the folder.

“We know Thomas is alive. We know Richard arranged for a photographer to monitor our wedding. We know someone stole the photograph. And we know Eleanor believed her death might be connected to what she discovered.””

“Correct,” Evelyn said.

“And we know the estate is connected to a private security company. I've requested an urgent welfare check through a senior officer outside the local chain of command.””

Daniel looked at her.

“When will they go?””

“As soon as they can establish the legal basis for entering the property.””

“And if Thomas is moved before then?””

Evelyn held his gaze.

“Then we need to act quickly without compromising the evidence.””

She turned to Jessica.

“You mentioned that Arthur gave you a storage-unit key.””

Jessica nodded.

“He said there was a metal case. It was empty except for the memory card and a note.””

“Was the unit registered in his name?””

“No. It belonged to a company called Northbridge Holdings.””

Evelyn went still.

Daniel noticed.

“What?””

She opened her laptop and typed the name into a database.

A few moments later, she turned the screen toward them.

Northbridge Holdings had been dissolved twelve years earlier.

Its director was listed as *Edward Cole*.

Gloria frowned.

“Who is Edward Cole?””

Evelyn scrolled down.

There was a scanned registration document attached to the file.

The director's date of birth matched the year Thomas Cole had been born.

But the photograph attached to the identification was not Thomas.

It was Arthur Bennett.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“My father used another name.””

“Apparently,” Evelyn said.

“And the registered address is an old industrial building on the outskirts of the city.””

Jessica leaned closer.

“Could that be where he kept the original documents?””

“Possibly.””

Daniel stood.

“Let's go.””

Evelyn closed her laptop.

“No. You will not go anywhere until I know whether the building is safe.””

He stared at her.

“My father has spent his life lying to me. My mother died trying to expose him. My biological father is locked inside a mansion, and someone is trying to stop us from finding him. I'm not sitting in this office while another person decides what I'm allowed to know.””

Gloria stood beside him.

“Neither am I.””

Evelyn looked from one to the other.

Then she sighed.

“Fine. We do this properly. I contact the authorities about the industrial building, and we arrange for an officer to accompany us. Nobody enters until the site has been checked.””

Daniel reluctantly nodded.

For once, he understood that patience might save a life.

But as they gathered their belongings, Gloria's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Thomas sitting inside a small room, his hands resting on a wooden table.

He was alive.

Beneath the image were six words.

*COME ALONE IF YOU WANT HIM BACK.*

Then a second message appeared.

*ASK DANIEL WHO KILLED YOUR MOTHER.*

Gloria stared at the screen.

Her mother?

She had spent her entire life believing she had died from complications following childbirth.

Her father had supposedly been dead for years.

Now a stranger was telling her that Daniel knew something about her mother's death.

She turned slowly.

Daniel was watching her.

“Gloria?””

She held out the phone.

He read the messages.

His face changed.

“What does this mean?”” she whispered.

Daniel looked at the photograph of Thomas.

Then at Gloria.

“I don't know.””

But his voice lacked conviction.

She took a step backward.

“You're lying.””

“Gloria, please—”

“Did you know something about my mother?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

The silence between them was more devastating than any confession.

Gloria's eyes filled with tears.

“Tell me.””

Daniel finally spoke.

“Your mother didn't die from childbirth complications.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“What?””

Daniel looked down.

“Your father told me the story years ago. He said your mother had been involved in a terrible accident shortly after you were born. He said the hospital records had been sealed because of a lawsuit.””

Gloria shook her head.

“You told me she died in a hospital.””

“I was a child when I first heard about it. Later, when I asked Arthur for more details, he told me never to discuss it with you.””

“And you obeyed him?””

“I thought he was protecting you.””

“From what?””

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“From the truth.””

Gloria backed away from him.

“You knew there was a secret about my mother, and you married me without telling me?””

“I didn't know what the secret was.””

“You knew enough to hide it.””

He reached for her.

She stepped out of reach.

Evelyn quietly closed the folder.

“This changes everything. We need to establish what happened to Gloria's mother before we proceed.””

Gloria barely heard her.

She was staring at Daniel, the man who had promised to stand beside her through every revelation.

“How long have you known?””

“Since I was seventeen.””

Gloria felt something inside her break.

“You've known for years.””

“I swear I never knew about the connection to Thomas. I never knew any of this would happen.””

She looked at him for a long moment.

Then she removed her wedding ring.

Daniel's face crumpled.

“Please don't.””

She placed the ring on the table.

“I need to know who I'm married to.””

She turned toward Evelyn.

“Find my mother's records.””

Then she looked at the photograph of Thomas.

“And get my father out of that house.””

That evening, Evelyn received a call from the senior officer handling the welfare check.

The estate had been searched under an emergency authorization.

The guards were gone.

The second-floor room was empty.

Thomas Cole had vanished.

But the officers had found something hidden behind a false wall.

A metal cabinet containing medical records, surveillance photographs, and dozens of identity documents.

Among them was a birth certificate for Gloria Margaret Cole.

Her mother's name was listed as Catherine Cole.

Her father's name was Thomas Cole.

A handwritten note had been folded inside the certificate.

Evelyn read it aloud.

“'If Gloria ever learns the truth, tell her that Catherine did not abandon her. She was taken away because she knew what Richard had done.''”

Gloria closed her eyes.

For the first time in her life, she had proof that her mother had loved her.

But the next document was worse.

It was a photograph of Catherine standing beside a younger Richard Bennett.

On the back, someone had written a date.

The date was two weeks before Gloria's birth.

And beneath it were four words.

*RICHARD WAS HER FIRST LOVE.*

Gloria looked up, stunned.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then Evelyn opened the final envelope recovered from the cabinet.

Inside was a handwritten confession signed by Arthur Bennett.

The first line read:

I did not kill Catherine Cole.

The second line read:

But I know who did.

May you like

And the name that followed was the one none of them had expected.

*Eleanor Bennett.*
