Chapter 8: The Man in the Wedding Photographs
At 8:17 the next morning, Gloria received an email from the wedding photographer.
The subject line read:
*YOUR PRIVATE GALLERY IS READY.*
Beneath it was a link to the photographs taken throughout the ceremony and reception.
Gloria stared at the screen.
“Don't open it,” Daniel said.
She looked up.
“Why?””
“Because we don't know what he's trying to do.””
Jessica stood near the kitchen counter, examining the envelope where Thomas's photograph had been kept.
“He wants us to see something.””
“Or he wants us to click a link that gives him access to our accounts,” Daniel replied.
Gloria closed the email.
Then she forwarded it to Evelyn Price, who had already asked them to preserve all communications related to the case.
Ten minutes later, Evelyn called.
“Do not use the link yet,” she said.
“I'll have someone examine it safely. In the meantime, I want you all to understand that this has moved beyond a family dispute. If someone is stealing evidence and sending threats, you need to protect yourselves.””
Daniel looked toward the windows.
“Are you saying we're being watched?””
“I'm saying the photographer's involvement is suspicious. We need evidence before we can establish what he's doing.””
Gloria rubbed her forehead.
“Can you find out who he really is?””
“I've already started. His contract was signed under the name Michael Shaw, but the company registration doesn't match the details he provided. I'll call you when I have something concrete.””
After the call ended, Gloria walked to the window.
The city looked painfully ordinary. Cars moved through the streets. A delivery driver carried a bag into the café across the road. Two women laughed beneath an umbrella.
Somewhere in that ordinary world, a man who might be her father was locked behind a door he couldn't open.
And someone had stolen the only photograph proving he was alive.
Daniel came to stand beside her.
“We'll find him.””
Gloria looked at him.
“What if the DNA results say we're related?””
He didn't answer immediately.
“What if they do?”” she pressed.
“What happens to us?””
Daniel's eyes filled with pain.
“Then we face the truth.””
“Would you still want to be with me?””
He closed his eyes.
“Gloria, I love you. But I won't ask you to ignore something this serious just because I don't want to lose you.””
She nodded slowly.
It wasn't the answer she wanted.
It was the answer she needed.
At noon, Evelyn called back.
“I've identified the photographer's business registration,” she said.
“The company was dissolved four years ago. The address leads to a mailbox service.””
“Can you find his real identity?”” Daniel asked.
“Possibly. The payment for your wedding photography came through a company connected to Richard Bennett.””
Gloria's stomach tightened.
“So Richard hired him.””
“That's what the financial records suggest. But I haven't yet established who the photographer actually is.””
Jessica leaned toward the phone.
“What about the email?””
“The link directs to a private server. The security specialist I consulted believes it may contain hidden tracking software. Do not open it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Why would Richard send us the photographs if he wanted us to stop investigating?””
“Perhaps he didn't send the email,” Evelyn replied.
“Someone else may have access to the photographer's account.””
Gloria looked at Jessica.
“Could the photographer be the person holding my father?””
“It's possible,” Evelyn said.
“But we shouldn't assume the same person is responsible for every event.””
After the call ended, Gloria sat at the kitchen table and opened the wedding contract.
The photographer's signature appeared beneath the agreed payment.
Michael Shaw.
But the handwriting looked strangely familiar.
She pulled out the photograph of Richard handing the envelope to the photographer.
Then she took the laboratory report from the folder.
At the bottom was a signature confirming receipt of the submitted DNA sample.
Richard Bennett.
Gloria placed the two images side by side.
Her breath caught.
The capital letters were nearly identical.
The same sharp angle on the M. The same narrow loop on the final letter. The same unusual line that cut through the signature like a blade.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
He came to the table.
“What?””
She pointed at the signatures.
“Look.””
Daniel studied them.
Then his face changed.
“Richard signed the photographer's contract?””
“Maybe.””
Jessica leaned over the table.
“Or the photographer used a signature that Richard supplied.””
Gloria felt her pulse quicken.
“Why would Richard hire someone under a false identity?””
Jessica looked at the wedding photograph.
“To watch us.””
Daniel picked up his phone.
“I'm calling him.””
Evelyn's warning echoed in Gloria's mind, but Daniel had already dialed.
Richard answered on the second ring.
“What now?””
“Did you hire our wedding photographer?””
A pause.
“What kind of question is that?””
“His company doesn't exist. The money came through one of your businesses. Did you hire him?””
Richard exhaled.
“Yes.””
Gloria stared at Daniel.
He put the call on speaker.
“Why?””
“Because I knew Jessica was planning to make a scene.””
Jessica stiffened.
“You knew I was coming?””
“I knew you'd been contacting the hotel. I knew you'd been threatening to expose private family documents. I hired someone to record what happened.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“Then why did the photographer take an envelope from you?””
“Because I gave him a copy of the photographs.””
Gloria stepped closer to the phone.
“You had copies?””
“Yes.””
“Of the photograph of my father?””
Richard hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Where are they now?””
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere you can't get them.””
Gloria's hands curled into fists.
“You've spent my entire life lying to me. You don't get to decide what I can know anymore.””
Richard's voice softened unexpectedly.
“Gloria, I never wanted you to get hurt.””
“Then tell me where my father is.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because the man holding him will kill him if he thinks you're getting close.””
Daniel slammed his palm against the table.
“Who is this man?””
Richard didn't answer.
“Uncle Richard!””
The line crackled.
Then Richard whispered, “Ask the photographer what happened to Eleanor Bennett.””
The call ended.
Gloria stared at the phone.
Daniel immediately called Evelyn and relayed the conversation.
She listened carefully.
“Do not contact the photographer directly,” she said.
“I'll make a formal request for the payment records and report the threats. If Richard is willing to cooperate, we may be able to establish the chain of events.””
“He isn't cooperating,” Daniel replied.
“Then we work with what we have.””
Gloria looked at the wedding contract.
There was a second signature near the bottom, almost hidden beneath the printed terms.
A witness.
*E. Graves.*
She pointed at it.
“Evelyn, I think we have another name.””
The lawyer went quiet.
“Read it to me.””
Gloria did.
After a moment, Evelyn said, “That could be the identity Jessica mentioned. I'll check it immediately.””
By late afternoon, Evelyn had found a possible match.
Elliot Graves had worked as a private investigator under several different business names. His license had been suspended after a complaint involving forged evidence and intimidation of witnesses.
Three years later, he had disappeared from public records.
“He was hired by Richard to investigate Thomas Cole,” Evelyn explained during a video call.
“At least, that's what one former associate claims.””
Jessica looked stunned.
“Why would Richard hire someone to investigate his own father?””
“Perhaps he wanted to locate him. Perhaps he wanted to ensure nobody else did. We don't know.””
Gloria leaned toward the camera.
“Can you find him?””
“I've identified an address associated with one of his former companies. It's an office building on the outskirts of the city. The lease ended years ago, but there may be records there.””
Daniel shook his head.
“We can't go looking for him ourselves.””
“Correct,” Evelyn said.
“I'll pass the information to the authorities.””
After the call, Gloria went upstairs to change.
She needed a shower, clean clothes, and a few minutes when nobody was telling her that her family might be built on a lie.
As she removed her earrings, she noticed something tucked beneath the collar of her wedding dress.
A small black memory card.
She froze.
She hadn't put it there.
Carefully, she lifted it out.
A tiny strip of paper was wrapped around it.
You deserve to know what happened at the estate.
Her hands began to shake.
She carried the card downstairs.
Daniel was in the living room with Jessica when she arrived.
“Look at this.””
Jessica went pale.
“Where did you get that?””
“It was hidden in my dress.””
Daniel stared at the card.
“Someone put that on you at the wedding?””
Gloria nodded.
“Or when we were at the estate.””
Jessica took a breath.
“There's only one way to find out what's on it.””
They used an old laptop disconnected from the internet. The card contained a single video file, recorded from a fixed camera inside a dimly lit room.
The image was grainy.
A man sat at a table, his face partly obscured by shadow.
Gloria leaned closer.
“Is that my father?””
Jessica shook her head.
“No.””
The man raised his head.
It was Elliot Graves.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this,” he said, “then Richard has lost control of the situation.””
Daniel's expression tightened.
Graves continued.
“I was hired to photograph the wedding, but the job was never about the wedding. I was instructed to retrieve a photograph from Jessica's handbag and make sure the guests witnessed a confrontation.””
Gloria's blood ran cold.
“The staged assault,” she whispered.
The man nodded as if he could hear her.
“Jessica agreed to create a distraction because she believed it would give her the opportunity to expose Richard. She was not told that someone else would be watching from inside the hotel.””
Jessica stared at the screen.
“I never agreed to help him.””
Graves continued.
“During the confrontation, I took the photograph of Thomas Cole from Jessica's envelope. I was supposed to deliver it to Richard. But I discovered something that changed my mind.””
He reached into his jacket and produced a photograph.
The missing photograph.
Gloria leaned forward.
Graves placed it on the table.
“Thomas Cole is not the only prisoner at the estate.””
A door opened behind him.
A second man entered.
His face was hidden, but Gloria recognized the expensive watch on his wrist.
She had seen it in dozens of wedding photographs.
Richard wore the same watch.
The second man placed a document on the table.
Graves looked down at it.
Then he looked directly at the camera.
“The man who has been held at the estate for twenty-nine years is not being kept there because he knows the truth about Thomas Cole.””
He paused.
“Thomas is being kept there because he knows the truth about Richard.””
The video abruptly ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then a notification appeared on the laptop.
A new file had been added to the memory card.
Its title was a single word.
*ELEANOR.*
Gloria clicked it.
The second video opened on a dark, empty room.
A woman's voice spoke from somewhere off-camera.
“Richard, if you're watching this, you should know that I never believed the accident story.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
It was his mother's voice.
Eleanor Bennett.
The recording continued.
“I know what you did to Thomas. I know what you did to Arthur. And I know what you intend to do to Daniel.””
A door slammed in the background.
Eleanor's voice broke.
“If anything happens to me, the person responsible will be the last person my son ever suspects.””
The screen flickered.
Then Eleanor stepped into view.
Her face was pale. A dark bruise marked her cheek.
She looked straight into the camera.
“Daniel, if you ever see this, there is something I need you to understand.””
She swallowed.
“Richard isn't the person you should be afraid of.””
A man's shadow appeared behind her.
Eleanor turned.
Her eyes widened.
Then she screamed.
The recording cut to black.
Daniel stared at the screen, his face utterly drained of color.
Gloria reached for his hand.
He didn't move.
Because the voice that spoke next came from the laptop speakers, clear and unmistakable.
It was Arthur Bennett.
May you like
And he said the words that would destroy the last thing Daniel believed about his family.
“Eleanor, I'm sorry. But if Richard discovers what you know about his real father, none of us will survive.””
