Chapter 8: The Last Lie

I didn’t sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, fragments returned.

The garden.

The shouting.

My father’s hand on my shoulder.

A woman’s scream.

Daniel’s face.

Eight-year-old me had buried those memories so deeply that I had convinced myself they never existed.

But my mind remembered.

My body remembered.

Fear always remembers.

At six in the morning, I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Claire.””

His voice sounded exhausted.

“Tell me the truth.””

Silence.

“Not another story. Not another excuse.””

“Where are you?””

“That doesn’t matter.””

“It matters to me.””

I laughed softly.

“Funny. You spent five years making sure I never knew where you really were.””

“Claire…”

“Did you know me before we met?””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why?””

“Because of your father.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

Daniel exhaled.

“My mother believed your father stole something from our family.””

“What?””

“Evidence.””

Susan was right.

“She thought my father ruined her life.””

“And you believed her?””

“I was young.””

“You were thirty.””

He became quiet.

I walked outside.

The morning air felt cold.

“Rachel told me you left her.””

Daniel’s breathing changed.

“She’s lying.””

“Is she?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

A long pause.

Finally:

“She found out about my mother’s plans.””

“What plans?””

“I don’t know.””

Another lie.

I could hear it.

“You always say you don’t know.””

“Because sometimes I don’t.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You know everything, Daniel. You just decide what I deserve to hear.””

He didn’t answer.

Then he said:

“Meet me.””

“No.””

“Please.””

“Why?””

“Because I want to tell you everything.””

I almost refused.

Then I remembered my father’s note.

Trust no one who says they love you without telling you the truth.

“Where?””

He gave me an address.

An old house outside the city.

When I arrived, Daniel was waiting.

No Eleanor.

No performance.

Just him.

For the first time in years, he looked like the man I thought I married.

That hurt.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t start there.””

He swallowed.

“Okay.””

We stood in silence.

Then he said:

“My mother hated your father.””

“Why?””

“Because he exposed my father’s crimes.””

“And Rachel?””

Daniel looked away.

“Rachel found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Proof that my mother was involved.””

I stared.

“So Rachel was trying to expose her.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you hide her?””

His eyes filled with shame.

“Because my mother convinced me Rachel betrayed me.””

“And you believed her.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“You let your mother destroy your wife.””

“I thought Rachel was gone.””

“But she wasn’t.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“When I found out she was alive…”

He stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“My mother already knew.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

“She kept Rachel hidden.””

The world became silent.

“Why?””

Daniel whispered:

“Because Rachel knew where your father hid the evidence.””

I stared at him.

Everything connected.

Rachel.

My father.

The evidence.

Me.

“What evidence?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“The evidence that could put my mother in prison.””

I stepped back.

“And you married me because?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because my mother thought you had the key.””

I felt sick.

“You used me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“But then I fell in love with you.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to say that.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“Love doesn’t erase what you did.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

A sound came from behind us.

A car door.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Claire.””

I turned.

Eleanor was standing there.

And beside her was a man I had never seen before.

Older.

Cold eyes.

Daniel went pale.

“Dad?””

I froze.

Daniel’s father stepped forward.

The man who was supposed to have disappeared years ago.

He smiled.

“Hello, Claire.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What is happening?””

His father answered.

“You’ve been asking the wrong questions.””

He walked closer.

“The real question is…”

May you like

He smiled.

“Why did your father erase your memory instead of telling you the truth?””
