Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew My Father

I didn’t tell Daniel about the message.

That was the first decision I made without considering his feelings.

The old Claire would have asked questions.

The old Claire would have searched his face for reassurance.

The old Claire would have wanted to believe him.

But the old Claire was the woman who spent five years defending a man who hid another wife underground.

I drove to the location alone.

It was an old storage building on the edge of town.

The kind of place people forgot existed.

The kind of place secrets survived.

I parked outside and kept my hands on the steering wheel.

Part of me wanted to leave.

Another part needed the truth.

I walked inside.

The door creaked open before I touched it.

Someone was waiting.

A woman.

Older.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

“Claire Morgan?””

I stopped.

“Yes.””

She studied me.

“You look like your father.””

My throat tightened.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Susan.””

She stepped aside.

“I was your father’s assistant.””

I stared.

“My father died eight years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why did you contact me?””

Susan’s face became serious.

“Because I waited until I was sure you were ready.””

“Ready for what?””

She handed me a folder.

I didn’t open it.

“What is this?””

“The reason Daniel married you.””

My fingers tightened around the folder.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Emails.

And one name repeated over and over.

Daniel Hayes.

My stomach dropped.

“How long?””

Susan sighed.

“Your father discovered Daniel’s family was hiding financial crimes.””

I looked through the papers.

“There’s no way.””

“There is.””

Susan pointed at one document.

“Your father found evidence that Eleanor Hayes had been moving stolen money through fake accounts.””

The same money.

The same accounts.

The same secret Daniel defended.

“But why me?””

Susan looked at me.

“Because your father hid the evidence somewhere only you could access.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know anything.””

“Not consciously.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Susan reached into another envelope.

She pulled out an old photograph.

My breath stopped.

It was me.

As a child.

Standing beside my father.

And beside him…

was Eleanor.

My hands started shaking.

“I don’t understand.””

Susan lowered her voice.

“Your father trusted Eleanor once.””

I stared at the picture.

“She betrayed him.””

The room felt colder.

“Daniel didn’t marry you randomly, Claire.””

Susan’s eyes met mine.

“He married you because he believed you inherited something from your father.””

“What?””

“A key.””

I almost laughed.

“A key?””

“Yes.””

Susan reached for the folder.

“Look at the last page.””

I turned.

There was a handwritten note.

My father’s handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

My heart broke seeing it.

*Claire, if you are reading this, it means they found out. Trust no one who says they love you without telling you the truth.*

I covered my mouth.

My father had known.

He had been afraid.

And he never told me.

At the bottom of the page was one final sentence.

*The key is not an object. It is a memory.*

I looked at Susan.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I ignored it.

Then another call.

This time from Rachel.

I answered immediately.

“Claire.””

Her voice was shaking.

“You need to leave.””

“What?””

“He knows where you are.””

My blood froze.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Daniel.””

I looked toward the window.

A black car had just stopped outside.

The door opened.

Daniel stepped out.

But he wasn’t alone.

Eleanor was with him.

Rachel’s voice came through the phone.

“Claire, listen to me.””

“What?””

“The man you married isn’t trying to get you back.””

My heart pounded.

“Then what is he trying to do?””

May you like

Her answer came quietly.

“He’s trying to make sure you never remember what happened the night your father died.””
