Chapter 9: The Truth Elena Took to Her Grave

Marcus read the name three times.

Evelyn Reed.

His mother had been dead for fifteen years.

She had suffered a stroke when Marcus was twenty-three. He had been beside her hospital bed when she took her last breath.

He remembered her final words.

Be a good man, Marcus. Protect your family.

Now Elena's letter suggested that the woman who had raised him had been connected to something he had never understood.

He immediately called Maya.

"Sweetheart, where did you find the letter?""

"In Mom's old photograph album.""

"Are you alone?""

"Claire is with me.""

"Don't touch anything else until I get home.""

"Okay, Daddy.""

He ended the call.

Detective Harris was watching him.

"Something wrong?""

Marcus showed him the photograph.

The detective read the name.

"Who's Evelyn Reed?""

"My mother.""

"Is she alive?""

"No. She died fifteen years ago.""

Harris studied the document.

"Then we need to find out why your wife was investigating her.""

Marcus looked at the recorder.

"There's only one person who can explain this.""

"Who?""

"Richard Hayes.""

Richard was arrested at 9:40 a.m.

He was found at a private airport outside Chicago, preparing to board a chartered flight.

He initially refused to speak.

Then Detective Harris showed him the bank documents.

Richard's confidence disappeared.

"Where did you get those?""

"Does it matter?""

"Those documents are private.""

Harris placed the recording device on the table.

Richard stared at it.

Marcus sat opposite him.

"Tell me what happened to Elena.""

Richard laughed nervously.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Three years ago, my wife discovered that you were stealing from my daughter's trust. She confronted Victoria. You visited my house on the night she died. A mechanic received money from you after discovering that her brakes had been tampered with.""

Richard looked away.

Marcus continued.

"How much do you want to deny?""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Your wife was a problem.""

Marcus stood so abruptly that his chair scraped backward.

"She was my wife.""

"She was going to destroy everything.""

"She was the mother of my child!""

Richard raised his hands.

"Calm down.""

Marcus leaned over the table.

"Tell me who ordered it.""

Richard looked at Detective Harris.

"I want a lawyer.""

Harris nodded.

"That's your right.""

Richard stood.

But before he reached the door, he turned toward Marcus.

"You think Victoria planned everything?""

Marcus said nothing.

Richard smiled bitterly.

"Ask your mother.""

Marcus went cold.

"My mother is dead.""

Richard's smile disappeared.

"Then perhaps you should ask what she did before she died.""

At home, Claire was waiting in the living room.

Maya sat beside her, holding the photograph album.

Marcus entered.

"Where is the letter?""

Maya handed it to him.

It was written on Elena's personal stationery.

The paper had yellowed around the edges.

Marcus began reading.

My dearest Marcus,

There is something about your mother that I discovered shortly before the accident.

Evelyn wasn't simply a wealthy woman who left behind an inheritance. Before she died, she established a private trust connected to several properties and investments.

Those assets were never included in the estate documents you received.

Marcus looked up.

"What?""

Claire sat down.

He continued.

I found the original documents in a storage file belonging to Peter Lawson. They showed that Evelyn had left a substantial portion of her estate to Maya.

Marcus stopped.

"To Maya?""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

He read the next paragraph.

Your mother believed you would eventually marry again. She wanted to ensure that Maya would always have financial independence, regardless of who entered your life.

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

However, someone altered the documents after Evelyn's death. The original beneficiary was removed, and the assets were transferred into a private holding company.

I discovered that Richard Hayes and Jonathan Pierce were involved.

Marcus looked at Claire.

"Why didn't I know about this?""

Claire shook her head.

"Elena was trying to protect you.""

He continued.

There is one more thing. Victoria knew about the inheritance before she met you.

Marcus closed the letter.

The room became silent.

Maya looked at him.

"Does that mean Victoria only married you for money?""

Marcus didn't know what to say.

Claire reached for Maya's hand.

"Sweetheart, none of this is your fault.""

Maya looked at her father.

"Did Mom know?""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Maya lowered her eyes.

"Then why didn't she tell you?""

Marcus looked at the letter.

"Because she was trying to find proof.""

He turned the page.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

If Victoria ever becomes your wife, remember that she didn't choose you first.

Marcus stared at the words.

Then he noticed something else.

A small note had been attached to the back.

Ask Evelyn's solicitor about the second will.

At noon, Marcus contacted the law firm that had handled his mother's estate.

The receptionist transferred him to a senior attorney named Robert Ellison.

When Marcus explained who he was, Robert went quiet.

"Mr. Reed, I've been expecting this call for a long time.""

Marcus gripped the desk.

"Why?""

"Your mother left instructions that a second will should be released when Maya turned twelve.""

"Why didn't you contact me?""

"Because the instructions were very specific. The original document was to be given to the child, not her father.""

Marcus looked toward Maya.

"Can you explain why?""

Robert paused.

"Your mother believed that if you ever married someone who intended to gain access to the family estate, Maya might need independent legal protection.""

Marcus felt a wave of disbelief.

"You're telling me my mother anticipated this?""

"She anticipated the possibility.""

Robert continued.

"She also left a recorded statement.""

"Can we hear it?""

"Yes. But I need you and Maya to come to my office.""

Marcus looked at his daughter.

"We'll be there.""

At two o'clock, Marcus and Maya sat inside Robert Ellison's office.

A large window overlooked the city.

Robert placed a sealed folder on the desk.

"This was prepared by your grandmother.""

Maya touched the envelope.

"Is it for me?""

Robert smiled.

"Yes.""

Marcus opened it carefully.

Inside was a legal document and a photograph of Evelyn holding baby Maya.

On the back, Evelyn had written:

To my little rose. Never let anyone tell you that you are less important than the people who want what belongs to you.

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

Robert cleared his throat.

"Your grandmother established a protected trust in your name. The original documents were altered after her death, but the second will restores the intended ownership.""

Marcus looked at the figures.

The estate was worth considerably more than he had imagined.

But he barely noticed.

He was focused on one clause.

*No spouse, guardian, trustee, or third party may assume control of the beneficiary's assets through marriage, coercion, or fraudulent guardianship.*

Marcus looked up.

"Who was appointed as the independent trustee?""

Robert turned the page.

"Your grandmother selected someone she trusted.""

"Who?""

Robert hesitated.

Then he said, "Peter Lawson.""

Marcus stared.

"But Peter is dead.""

"Not according to the estate records.""

The room fell silent.

Marcus looked at Maya.

Then back at Robert.

"What do you mean?""

Robert opened a second folder.

"Peter Lawson was declared deceased following a boating incident. However, the death certificate was never supported by a confirmed identification.""

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

"You're saying Peter might still be alive?""

Robert nodded.

"Your mother suspected that he had disappeared voluntarily to protect the estate.""

Marcus stood.

"Why would he do that?""

Robert handed him another document.

"Because Peter wasn't simply your business partner. He was your mother's biological son.""

Marcus stared at him.

The room seemed to tilt.

"That's impossible.""

Robert shook his head.

"Your mother had a child before she married your father. She gave him up for adoption. Peter Lawson was that child.""

Marcus sank into his chair.

His entire life had been built around a family he thought he understood.

Now he was discovering that his mother had kept an entire branch of it hidden.

Maya reached for his hand.

"Dad?""

He squeezed her fingers.

"I'm okay.""

But he wasn't.

At 4:30 p.m., Detective Harris called.

"We've located Victoria.""

"Where?""

"At a private residence belonging to her brother.""

"Is she under arrest?""

"Not yet. We need to question her about the recordings and the guardianship petition.""

Marcus looked toward Maya.

"Has Richard talked?""

"Some.""

"What did he say?""

Harris lowered his voice.

"He claims Victoria arranged the meeting with Elena on the night of the accident.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Did he admit anything else?""

"Yes. He says Victoria was supposed to retrieve the original recording from Elena's car.""

Marcus looked at the photograph of the damaged vehicle.

"Why?""

"Because the recording contained evidence about who was funding the entire operation.""

Marcus understood.

"Who?""

Harris paused.

"Your father.""

Marcus felt the blood leave his face.

"My father has been dead for fifteen years.""

"Richard says the money came from an offshore account established in your father's name before his death.""

Marcus gripped the phone.

"That makes no sense.""

"That's why we need to examine the account.""

Marcus looked at Robert.

"Can you trace the money?""

Robert nodded.

"We can try.""

Then Detective Harris said something else.

"There's one more problem.""

"What?""

"Jonathan Pierce has disappeared.""

At 7:00 p.m., Marcus returned to the estate.

He found a package waiting outside the front door.

No return address.

Inside was an old photograph.

It showed Marcus as a teenager, standing beside his father in front of their family home.

His mother stood behind them.

But someone had circled a fourth person.

A young man standing near the gate.

Marcus turned the photograph over.

A handwritten message read:

Your father didn't die believing he had failed you. He died believing he had saved you.

Marcus stared.

Then he noticed the young man's face.

Peter Lawson.

He called Robert immediately.

"Look at this photograph.""

Robert examined it over a video call.

His expression changed.

"Where did you get that?""

"It was delivered to my house.""

Robert leaned closer.

"Marcus, that's important.""

"Why?""

"Because the date on the back is three years after your father's death.""

Marcus looked again.

The photograph had been taken fifteen years earlier.

But the date was clearly written in his mother's handwriting.

He felt his pulse quicken.

"That's impossible.""

Robert shook his head.

"Unless the man in the photograph isn't your father.""

Marcus looked at the image again.

The man standing beside him was smiling.

But something about his face seemed wrong.

He zoomed in.

The eyes were different.

The jawline was different.

The man who had raised him might not have been the man he believed was his father.

At 9:15 p.m., Maya came downstairs carrying the silver ring.

"Dad?""

Marcus looked up.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"I found something inside the ring.""

He took it.

Maya pointed to the tiny rose engraving.

"There's another little mark.""

Marcus examined the inside of the band.

A small number had been etched beside the inscription.

*1017.*

October 17.

The date Elena died.

Marcus looked at Maya.

"Did you know this was here?""

She shook her head.

"No.""

He turned the ring over.

A tiny seam ran along the inside of the band.

He pressed it gently.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a folded strip of paper.

Marcus carefully removed it.

Four words were written in Elena's handwriting.

The witness is your father.

Marcus stopped breathing.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A familiar male voice spoke.

"Hello, son.""

Marcus gripped the phone.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it in childhood memories, old recordings, and dreams.

But it was impossible.

"Who is this?""

The man chuckled softly.

"Don't you recognize your own father?""

Marcus couldn't speak.

Then the voice continued.

"Tomorrow, I want you to bring Maya to the old family house.""

Marcus looked toward his daughter.

"Why?""

"Because it's time she met the man who saved her mother's life.""

Marcus felt his blood turn cold.

"Saved her?""

The man sighed.

"There's something Elena never told you, Marcus.""

A pause.

Then he whispered:

"Your mother wasn't the only woman Victoria tried to kill.""

The call ended.

Marcus stood frozen.

And for the first time since Elena's death, he understood that the wedding, the stolen inheritance, and the mysterious recordings were only pieces of something much bigger.
