Chapter 3: The Photograph She Couldn't Explain

Marcus stared at the photograph until the edges began to blur.

Victoria stood beside her brother outside a private office building. Richard was holding a document envelope. Victoria was looking directly at the camera.

The date printed beneath the image was October 14.

Elena's accident had happened on October 17.

"Where did you get this?"" Marcus asked.

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

"From an independent investigator I hired after discovering the transfers.""

"You hired an investigator without telling me?""

"I was trying to establish whether this was a bookkeeping error before I brought it to you.""

Marcus put the photograph down.

"Was it?""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

Marcus walked around his desk.

"How long has this been happening?""

"The first suspicious transfer was recorded eight months before Elena died. The amounts were small at first. Then they increased.""

"How much was taken?""

"Four hundred and twenty-seven thousand dollars.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

That money belonged to Maya.

It had been established by Elena's parents and protected in a trust intended to support their daughter through college and adulthood.

Marcus had never touched it.

He had assumed it was safe.

"Why didn't Elena tell me?""

Daniel opened another section of the folder.

"She tried.""

Marcus looked up.

"What?""

"According to the investigator, Elena contacted an attorney two days before the accident. She wanted to freeze the account.""

Marcus felt the room tilt.

"Do you have the attorney's name?""

Daniel nodded.

"Margaret Collins.""

Marcus picked up his phone.

"Find her number.""

At the same time, Victoria was standing in front of a mirror upstairs.

She adjusted her earrings, examined her reflection, and smiled.

The wedding was only three days away.

Everything had been arranged.

The flowers had arrived. The guests had confirmed. The estate had received the final payment.

She had spent months making sure the wedding would be perfect.

And Marcus had no idea how much depended on him saying two simple words.

"I do.""

Her phone buzzed.

Richard.

She answered immediately.

"Not now.""

His voice was sharp.

"We have a problem.""

Victoria looked at the closed bedroom door.

"What kind of problem?""

"Marcus has started asking questions.""

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"About what?""

"The trust.""

Victoria went still.

"How does he know?""

"I don't know. Someone must have opened the old files.""

"Did you destroy everything?""

"I destroyed what I could.""

"What does that mean?""

Richard exhaled.

"It means there's one document I couldn't find.""

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Which one?""

"The original recording.""

She nearly dropped the phone.

"Are you insane? Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because Elena made a copy.""

Victoria's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Where?""

"I don't know.""

There was a long silence.

Then Richard said something that made her blood run cold.

"Ask yourself why Maya suddenly wants to wear that silver ring.""

Victoria looked toward the bedroom door.

"What ring?""

Richard hung up.

Downstairs, Marcus had just finished speaking to Margaret Collins.

The attorney sounded older than he remembered, but her voice was unmistakable.

"Mr. Reed, I've been waiting for you to call.""

"Why didn't you contact me three years ago?""

"Your wife instructed me not to reveal certain information until Maya reached twelve.""

Marcus gripped the desk.

"She's twelve now.""

"I know.""

"Then tell me what happened.""

Margaret paused.

"Elena discovered that funds were being diverted from Maya's trust. She also found evidence that someone had gained access to your company's confidential financial records.""

"Who?""

"I can't identify that person over the phone.""

"Then tell me what Elena left.""

"She left a recording.""

Marcus stood.

"Of what?""

"Of a conversation she had with someone involved in the transfers.""

"Who was the person?""

Margaret's voice became quieter.

"Your wife was afraid of someone she trusted.""

Marcus looked at the photograph on his desk.

Victoria.

"Was it my fiancée?""

The silence lasted too long.

Then Margaret answered.

"Mr. Reed, I strongly recommend that you postpone your wedding.""

Marcus sat down.

"Why?""

"Because the recording contains something that could change everything you believe about your wife's final days.""

That afternoon, Marcus found Maya in the backyard.

She was sitting beneath the old apple tree, sketching in a notebook.

He sat beside her.

"How's the drawing going?""

Maya showed him the page.

It was a picture of three people.

Marcus recognized himself immediately.

Elena stood beside him, wearing the blue dress she had worn on their tenth anniversary.

And Maya stood between them.

"That's beautiful," he said.

Maya closed the notebook.

"Do you think Mom would be happy if you got married?""

Marcus took a long breath.

"I think she'd want me to be happy.""

"Would she like Victoria?""

He didn't answer.

Maya watched him.

"Sometimes Victoria looks at me like she wishes I wasn't here.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"Has she said anything else?""

Maya shook her head.

Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out the silver ring.

Marcus stared.

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

He recognized it immediately.

Elena had worn that ring every day of their marriage.

"Where did you get this?""

"Mom gave it to me.""

Marcus took the ring carefully.

"She gave you this?""

Maya nodded.

"She told me you would know what it meant.""

He turned the ring between his fingers.

On the inside of the band were three tiny engraved words.

Always our promise.

Marcus remembered.

The night before Maya's fifth birthday, Elena had asked him to promise something.

They had been sitting in the nursery, watching their daughter sleep.

"If anything ever happens to me," Elena had said, "I need you to promise that Maya will always know she comes first.""

Marcus had kissed her forehead.

"Of course.""

"Not because she's your responsibility. Because she's our daughter.""

"I promise.""

Elena had taken off the ring.

"Then someday, when she needs it, give this to her. And tell her that no matter what happens, the three of us will always be a family.""

Marcus stared at the inscription.

He had forgotten the exact words.

Not the promise.

Never the promise.

But grief had buried so many memories that he hadn't recognized what the ring represented.

He looked at Maya.

"Why didn't you tell me you had it?""

"Because I was waiting for you to remember.""

Marcus pulled her close.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""

Maya began to cry.

"I thought you forgot her.""

"No.""

He held her tighter.

"I could never forget your mother.""

That evening, Victoria entered Marcus's study without knocking.

He was sitting behind his desk, staring at the financial records.

She placed a glass of wine beside him.

"You're working too hard.""

Marcus didn't look up.

"Just checking a few things.""

"Three days before our wedding? You should be relaxing.""

He finally looked at her.

"Do you know Richard visited my office last month?""

Victoria blinked.

"My brother?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"He wanted access to some company records.""

She gave a small laugh.

"Richard has always been interested in business.""

"Did you know he had access to Maya's trust?""

The glass stopped halfway to her lips.

"What?""

"Maya's inheritance.""

Victoria placed the wine down.

"Why would my brother have access to that?""

Marcus studied her.

"That's what I'm asking.""

She smiled, but it looked forced.

"Marcus, I think you're getting yourself worked up over something Daniel misunderstood.""

"Did you meet Richard outside the Hayes building on October 14, three years ago?""

Victoria's face changed.

Only slightly.

But Marcus saw it.

"How do you know about that?""

"Answer the question.""

She crossed her arms.

"I don't remember.""

"Really?""

"Marcus, that was three years ago.""

He turned the photograph toward her.

"Do you remember now?""

Victoria stared at the image.

Then she slowly looked up.

"Where did you get that?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Instead, he asked, "What were you doing with my brother-in-law?""

"Your wife's brother-in-law," she corrected.

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

Marcus went completely still.

Victoria blinked.

"I didn't mean—"

"Why did you say that?""

"Marcus, you're twisting my words.""

He stood.

"Get out of my office.""

She stared at him.

"Excuse me?""

"Get out.""

Victoria picked up her handbag.

At the door, she turned.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Maybe. But I think I've made a bigger one already.""

Later that night, Marcus drove to Margaret Collins's office.

She was waiting with a sealed envelope.

"Elena wanted you to receive this personally," she said.

Marcus opened it.

Inside was a small memory card and a handwritten note.

He recognized Elena's handwriting.

Marcus, if you're reading this, it means I wasn't able to tell you everything myself.

His hands began shaking.

He read the next line.

Please don't let anyone convince you that what happened was an accident before you hear the truth.

He looked at Margaret.

"What's on the card?""

"An audio recording.""

"Of the person who stole the money?""

Margaret shook her head.

"More than that.""

She placed a second envelope on the desk.

"This contains a photograph Elena took shortly before she died.""

Marcus opened it.

The image showed Elena sitting in a parked car.

Beside her was a woman.

Victoria.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

"When was this taken?""

"Three days before the accident.""

He looked at Margaret.

"Why were they together?""

"That's what Elena wanted you to find out.""

Marcus picked up the memory card.

"Did she say anything else?""

Margaret hesitated.

"Yes.""

"What?""

The attorney looked directly at him.

"She said that if Victoria ever became part of your family, Maya would be in danger.""

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.

He returned home after midnight.

The house was dark except for the light beneath Maya's bedroom door.

He knocked gently.

"Sweetheart?""

Maya opened it.

She was wearing pajamas and holding the silver ring.

"Dad?""

Marcus crouched.

"I found something Mom left for us.""

Maya looked at the memory card in his hand.

"Is it about the promise?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

She hesitated.

"Is it bad?""

Marcus wanted to lie.

He wanted to tell her that everything was fine.

Instead, he brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"I don't know yet. But we're going to find out together.""

Maya looked at the ring.

"Will you give it to me at the wedding?""

Marcus stared at her.

"What?""

"You promised Mom you'd give it to me when I turned twelve. My birthday was last month.""

He looked at the little silver band.

Then he remembered the words he had said to Elena.

And the promise he had made to Maya.

"Yes," he whispered.

"I will.""

Maya hugged him.

"Thank you, Daddy.""

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"Get some sleep.""

He waited until she closed the door.

Then he went downstairs and inserted the memory card into his laptop.

A single audio file appeared.

The date was October 14.

Three days before Elena died.

Marcus pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then Elena's voice filled the room.

"Victoria, please. You have to tell Marcus the truth.""

A second voice answered.

"You're making this much harder than it needs to be.""

Marcus stopped breathing.

It was Victoria.

Then Elena spoke again.

"If anything happens to me, Maya must never be left alone with you.""

A chair scraped against the floor.

Victoria laughed.

And then she said something that made Marcus pull his hands away from the keyboard.

"Elena, if you tell him what Richard did, neither of you will ever have a normal life again.""

The recording continued.

But before Marcus could hear the next sentence, a notification appeared on his screen.

*New message from Victoria.*

He opened it.

We need to talk about Maya. I know what you've found.

A second message arrived.

And if you play that recording for anyone, you'll destroy the only family you have left.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then his phone rang.

May you like

The caller ID displayed a number he hadn't seen in three years.

*Unknown — Elena Reed's old phone number.*
