Chapter 2: The Woman Who Had Everything
The SUV stopped directly in front of the broken entrance.
Tiana could see the driver through the windshield.
A woman in a cream-colored coat stepped out, holding a black leather suitcase in one hand and a phone in the other.
Vanessa Cole.
Even from a distance, she looked perfectly composed.
Her blonde hair fell over her shoulders in loose waves. Her heels clicked against the driveway as she approached the mansion.
She didn't look like someone arriving at the scene of a potential murder.
She looked like someone arriving for dinner.
Darius stared at her.
“Vanessa, what are you doing here?””
She glanced at the broken glass.
“Finishing what you couldn't.””
Tiana felt something cold settle in her stomach.
She stepped out from behind Darius.
“You knew about this?””
Vanessa finally looked at her.
“Oh, Tiana.””
She said the name with the exhausted patience of someone addressing a child.
“Of course I knew.””
Tiana shook her head.
“You were in our house. You sat at our dinner table. You hugged me at Christmas.””
Vanessa placed the suitcase on the marble floor.
“And you were always so nice.””
“Why?””
“Because it made everything easier.””
Darius moved toward Vanessa.
“You said nobody would get hurt.””
Vanessa raised an eyebrow.
“I said nobody important would get hurt.””
The words landed like a slap.
Tiana looked at her husband.
“Important?””
Darius rubbed his forehead.
“Vanessa, stop talking.””
“No, Darius. I'm tired of protecting you.””
She opened the suitcase.
Inside were several thick folders, a laptop, and a collection of documents secured with red binding clips.
Marcus approached her.
“Did you bring everything?””
“Almost.””
“Almost isn't good enough.””
Vanessa removed a small envelope and handed it to him.
“There's the revised agreement. There's the account information. And there's the recording.””
Darius's face changed.
“What recording?””
Vanessa ignored him.
Marcus opened the envelope.
“Good.””
He turned to his men.
“Take the laptop upstairs. Check the office.””
One of the men immediately headed toward the staircase.
Darius stepped into his path.
“Don't go in there.””
The intruder raised his weapon.
“Move.””
“That's my private office.””
Marcus laughed.
“Not anymore.””
Tiana watched her husband carefully.
Something about his reaction felt different.
He hadn't protested when Marcus accused him of financial crimes.
He hadn't reacted when the mistress arrived.
But the moment the intruder mentioned his office, Darius had looked ready to fight.
“What are you hiding?”” Tiana asked.
Darius turned to her.
“Nothing.””
Vanessa laughed.
“That's what he told me, too.””
She took a phone from her coat and pressed play.
A man's voice filled the foyer.
Darius's voice.
“If the transfer clears, Tiana gets nothing. The house goes to Vanessa, the company goes into liquidation, and the police find enough evidence to believe my wife stole the money.””
Tiana stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
Vanessa's voice followed.
“And what happens if she finds out?””
Darius answered without hesitation.
“She won't.””
The recording ended.
For several seconds, the only sound was the distant hum of the mansion's air conditioning.
Tiana looked at her husband.
“Was that real?””
Darius shook his head.
“It's been edited.””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Would you like me to play the rest?””
“Vanessa, don't.””
She pressed the screen again.
This time, Darius's voice sounded clearer.
“Once the insurance policy pays out, we split the money. You get the penthouse in Manhattan. I get the company back under my control.””
Vanessa asked, “And Tiana?””
A pause.
Then Darius answered.
“She becomes the person everyone blames.””
The recording stopped.
Tiana's knees nearly buckled.
Darius reached for her.
She stepped away.
“Don't touch me.””
“Tiana, listen to me.””
“You planned to frame me?””
“No. I was trying to protect you.””
She stared at him.
“From what? The consequences of your own crimes?””
He lowered his voice.
“It's complicated.””
“Then make it simple.””
Darius glanced at Marcus.
The older man was watching them with the detached expression of someone observing a transaction.
Darius finally spoke.
“Three years ago, I borrowed money to save the company. The business was collapsing. I had employees, contracts, investors. I thought I could fix it.””
Tiana stared at him.
“How much?””
“Eight million.””
“From whom?””
Darius looked away.
“Private lenders.””
Marcus chuckled.
“That's one way to describe us.””
Darius continued.
“I paid most of it back. Then the company expanded. We made money. Everything was fine until Vanessa started working with the investors.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Don't make me the villain in your story.””
“You manipulated everything.””
“I gave you an opportunity.””
“You told them about the accounts!””
“And you gave me access.””
Tiana looked at Vanessa.
“Why did you want my money?””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“Because you had something I wanted.””
“The house?””
“The house. The shares. The inheritance.””
Tiana frowned.
“What inheritance?””
Vanessa looked at Darius.
He said nothing.
For the first time, Tiana noticed that her husband was avoiding her eyes.
Marcus took a step closer.
“Mrs. Bennett, perhaps your husband should explain why your name was placed on the company ownership documents five years ago.””
Tiana stared at him.
“I don't own his company.””
Marcus looked almost amused.
“Actually, you own fifty-one percent.””
The words seemed to echo through the enormous foyer.
Tiana laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the alternative was screaming.
“That isn't possible.””
Vanessa opened another folder.
“Your husband used your inheritance to acquire the company after his first business failed. He needed a clean financial history, so he put the majority shares in your name.””
Darius snapped.
“I was protecting our family!””
“You were hiding behind her,” Vanessa replied.
Tiana remembered the inheritance.
Her grandmother had left her a trust fund worth nearly $11 million. Darius had encouraged her to invest part of it in his business when they first married.
He had called it their future.
She had trusted him.
She had signed documents without reading every page because he told her they were routine.
Now she understood why Vanessa had been so interested in her.
It wasn't about jealousy.
It wasn't about an affair.
It was about ownership.
“Why would you need to kill Vanessa?”” Tiana asked Marcus.
Marcus glanced at the blonde woman.
“Because she changed the agreement.””
Vanessa's expression tightened.
“Don't listen to him.””
Marcus continued.
“She promised us the company and the accounts. Then she decided to keep the money for herself.””
Vanessa snapped her suitcase shut.
“I never agreed to murder anyone.””
“You agreed to eliminate a witness.””
“I agreed to make sure Darius couldn't interfere.””
Marcus smiled.
“And who did you think would be standing in the room when we arrived?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Tiana felt the floor shift beneath her.
The entire arrangement had been built around her.
Her signature.
Her inheritance.
Her company.
Her life.
She turned toward Darius.
“Did you know?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“You knew they were coming here tonight.””
“Tiana—”
“You knew!””
“I was going to get you out.””
“How?””
Darius swallowed.
“I had a car waiting.””
Vanessa burst out laughing.
“Don't tell her that.””
Darius glared at her.
Vanessa took another phone from her coat.
“Tell her what was in the trunk.””
Tiana looked at the phone.
“What?””
Vanessa opened a photograph.
It showed a black sedan parked in the underground garage.
On the back seat was a large travel bag.
Beside it sat a passport.
Tiana recognized the photograph of the woman on the passport.
It was her.
But the name beneath the photograph wasn't Tiana Bennett.
It was Elena Morris.
Vanessa enlarged the image.
“Your husband planned to send you out of the country under a false identity. After that, he was going to report you missing.””
Darius stepped forward.
“Enough!””
Marcus raised his device.
The red dot returned to Tiana's chest.
“Everyone relax,” he said.
“We still have one problem to solve.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Which one of you is going to tell me where the original account ledger is?””
Vanessa turned pale.
Darius looked at Tiana.
And Tiana realized something.
They weren't frightened because Marcus had a weapon.
They were frightened because he knew about a document that neither of them wanted him to find.
Tiana slowly raised her eyes.
“I know where it is.””
All three of them turned toward her.
Darius whispered, “Tiana, don't.””
She looked directly at Marcus.
“It's not in the office.””
Marcus lowered his device slightly.
“Where is it?””
Tiana pointed toward the staircase.
“Under the floorboards in the nursery.””
Darius went white.
Vanessa dropped her phone.
May you like
Because the nursery had been locked for three years.
And none of them had expected Tiana to know what was hidden inside.
