Chapter 1: The Man Behind the Glass

“Take me! Just let her go!””

Darius Bennett stood in the marble foyer of his $12 million mansion with both hands raised, his expensive black suit stained with blood near the collar. Behind him, his wife clung to his waist, trembling so violently that her diamond bracelet rattled against his belt.

Outside the glass entrance, a hooded man stood beneath the golden glow of the driveway lights.

In his right hand was a small black device.

A thin red beam traveled through the glass and settled directly over Tiana Bennett's chest.

The stranger tilted his head.

“You, Darius. Your wife made a new deal! You keep the money... and we eliminate the mistress!””

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Tiana looked down at the glowing red dot.

Then she looked up at her husband.

“Darius?”” she whispered.

“What is he talking about?””

Darius didn't answer.

And that silence frightened her more than the weapon outside.

Only twenty minutes earlier, Tiana had been standing in front of a mirror upstairs, deciding whether to wear the emerald earrings her husband had bought her for their fifth wedding anniversary.

She had been happy.

Not because the marriage was perfect. It wasn't.

But because Darius had promised her that tonight would be different.

For months, he had been distracted, frequently traveling, taking private calls, and disappearing behind the closed doors of his home office. Whenever she asked questions, he kissed her forehead and told her that running a business came with responsibilities she couldn't understand.

Tonight, however, he had promised to make it up to her.

A private dinner. No phones. No business associates.

Just them.

At 8:15 p.m., she heard a crash downstairs.

At 8:17, the security alarm began screaming.

At 8:19, Darius came running into the bedroom with a gunshot wound grazing his shoulder.

And at 8:20, their marriage became a nightmare.

“Tiana, get behind me!”” he shouted.

She had barely reached the staircase before the front entrance exploded inward.

Glass shattered across the marble floor.

A man in black stepped through the opening, followed by two others wearing dark tactical clothing.

Darius immediately raised his hands.

“Don't shoot! My wife has nothing to do with this!””

The first intruder laughed.

“That's interesting, Mr. Bennett. Because your wife is the reason we're here.””

Tiana froze.

“What?””

Darius turned toward her.

“Don't listen to them.””

The intruder removed his hood.

He was a tall man in his early forties, with a narrow scar running from his left temple to his cheek. His expression was so calm that it made the destruction around him seem almost casual.

“My name is Marcus,” he said.

“And I've spent the last three months cleaning up your husband's mess.””

Darius swallowed.

“Marcus, we had an agreement.””

“We did. You were supposed to deliver the money.””

“I delivered it.””

Marcus pulled a phone from his pocket and showed him a photograph.

It was a bank transfer.

A transfer worth $4.8 million.

Darius stared at it.

“That isn't possible.””

“Isn't it?”” Marcus asked.

“Because according to our records, the money arrived in an account controlled by your wife.””

Tiana released Darius's waist.

“My account?””

Darius turned sharply.

“Stay quiet, Tiana.””

She blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“Not now.””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Ah. There it is. The famous Bennett marriage. The husband gives orders, and the wife follows.””

He walked farther into the foyer.

One of his men closed the broken entrance behind him.

“Here's the problem, Darius. Someone changed the agreement. Someone offered us more money to make sure the mistress never leaves this house alive.””

Tiana felt the blood drain from her face.

“I'm his wife.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Are you?””

Darius stepped forward.

“Don't you dare touch her.””

Marcus raised the black device.

The red beam appeared on Tiana's chest.

“Then tell me something, Mr. Bennett. Why does your wife's signature appear on the revised contract?””

Darius went completely still.

Tiana looked between them.

“What contract?””

Neither man answered.

She slowly turned toward her husband.

“Darius, what contract?””

He lowered his hands slightly.

“Tiana, I can explain.””

“Then explain!””

Marcus laughed.

“Five years of marriage, and he still hasn't told you?””

He pulled a folded document from his jacket and tossed it onto the marble floor.

It slid across the polished surface until it stopped beside Tiana's bare feet.

She looked down.

At the top of the page was the name of her husband's company.

Beneath it was a financial agreement.

And at the bottom, beside a figure of $4.8 million, was a signature.

TIANA BENNETT.

She shook her head.

“No.””

Darius moved toward the paper.

“Don't touch that.””

Tiana looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because it's not what you think.””

“Then tell me what I think!””

Marcus raised one finger.

“Careful, Mr. Bennett. Your wife is beginning to ask the right questions.””

Tiana picked up the document.

Her fingers trembled as she read the first paragraph.

The agreement concerned a private acquisition, a transfer of assets, and a confidentiality arrangement involving three individuals.

Darius Bennett.

Tiana Bennett.

And a woman named Vanessa Cole.

Tiana knew that name.

She had seen it on her husband's phone.

She had seen it on hotel receipts.

She had seen it in messages that disappeared whenever she entered the room.

Vanessa.

The woman Darius had insisted was merely a consultant.

Tiana's lips parted.

“She's the mistress?””

Darius closed his eyes.

Marcus answered for him.

“She's much more than that.””

He pulled another photograph from his pocket.

It showed Darius standing beside a beautiful blonde woman outside a private airport terminal.

His hand rested on her waist.

Her lips were pressed against his cheek.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

Three months before Darius had celebrated his fifth wedding anniversary with Tiana.

Tiana stared at it.

“You told me you were in Chicago.””

Darius stepped closer.

“Tiana, please.””

“You told me you were closing a business deal.””

“I was.””

“With her?””

He didn't answer.

A tear slipped down Tiana's cheek.

Marcus glanced at his watch.

“Beautiful. Now that the family reunion is over, we can finish the business.””

He pointed the device at her again.

“Darius, step away from your wife.””

“No.””

“Step away.””

“I said no!””

Darius moved in front of Tiana, spreading his arms.

Marcus sighed.

“You're making this unnecessarily difficult.””

“Take me! Just let her go!””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“You still don't understand, do you?””

He held up the document.

“Your wife made a new deal. She offered us everything we wanted. The company shares, the offshore accounts, and the evidence against you.””

Tiana looked horrified.

“I never signed anything!””

Marcus looked directly into her eyes.

“Then someone signed for you.””

Darius turned around.

For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely terrified.

Not because a weapon was pointed at his wife.

Because the document was real.

And because someone had known exactly where to find it.

A sharp electronic beep came from Marcus's device.

The red dot shifted slightly.

Tiana gasped and grabbed Darius's arm.

“Please don't let them kill me.””

Darius turned toward her.

“I won't.””

But before he could say anything else, Marcus's phone vibrated.

He checked the screen.

Then he looked at Darius and smiled.

“Your mistress just arrived.””

Outside, another pair of headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.

And the woman stepping out of the black SUV was carrying a suitcase.
