Chapter 9: The Final Betrayal

I watched the video six times.

Not because I wanted to.

Because my mind kept rejecting it.

My business partner, Mark, sat across from Vanessa.

The man who had been with me from the beginning.

The man who knew every detail of my company.

Every contract.

Every weakness.

Every private conversation.

And there he was.

With my sister.

Planning something.

The video ended before I could hear more.

No explanation.

No context.

Just enough to destroy trust.

I called Mark.

He didn’t answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Daniel watched the video silently.

When it ended, he leaned back.

“This changes everything.””

I looked at him.

“Can we use it?””

“We need to know who recorded it.””

“Does it matter?””

“Yes.””

He paused.

“Because if this was obtained illegally, it complicates things.””

I looked at the screen.

“But if it’s real?””

Daniel nodded.

“Then your sister and your partner may have committed fraud.””

The word felt heavy.

Fraud.

Not family drama.

Not jealousy.

Not a misunderstanding.

Fraud.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Clara found me sitting in the office.

“You’re blaming yourself.””

I looked up.

“I trusted him.””

“That’s not a crime.””

“I should have seen it.””

She walked over and sat beside me.

“You spent years believing the best in people.””

I looked away.

“Maybe that was stupid.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“It was kind.””

She took my hand.

“But kindness without boundaries becomes something people exploit.””

The next morning, Mark finally called.

“I heard you’re angry.””

I almost laughed.

“You think?””

“Can we talk?””

“Where?””

“Somewhere private.””

“No.””

Silence.

“You don’t trust me?””

I stared at the phone.

“Do you?””

He went quiet.

That silence told me everything.

We met in my office.

The same office where we had celebrated our first major contract.

Mark looked older.

Tired.

Guilty.

“You saw the video.””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I can explain.””

“Start.””

He took a breath.

“Vanessa came to me years ago.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“When?””

“Three years after we started.””

“Why?””

“She thought you were hiding money.””

I almost smiled.

“She always thought that.””

Mark looked ashamed.

“She asked about the company structure.””

“And you told her?””

“Not everything.””

“Not everything?””

My voice rose.

“You discussed my company with my sister?””

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made choices.””

Mark looked away.

“She convinced me you were planning to cut everyone out.””

I stared at him.

“She convinced you?””

“She said you were becoming obsessed with success.””

“And you believed her?””

He didn’t answer.

I stood.

“How much?””

Mark looked confused.

“How much what?””

“How much did she promise you?””

His face changed.

And I knew.

I knew before he spoke.

“Mark.””

He swallowed.

“She offered me a percentage.””

I felt sick.

My own partner.

My own sister.

Working together.

“I want the truth.””

Mark closed his eyes.

“She believed your company should have been divided.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought your success came from the family.””

I laughed quietly.

“So she wanted a piece.””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Mark whispered:

“Twenty-five percent.””

The number hit harder than I expected.

Not because of the money.

Because of the arrogance.

She believed she deserved a quarter of everything I built.

After the meeting, Daniel moved quickly.

Evidence was collected.

Messages were recovered.

Financial records were examined.

And then we found the final piece.

A transfer.

From Vanessa.

To Mark.

The description was simple.

*“Initial payment for cooperation.””*

She had paid him.

She had paid my partner to help steal my company.

That evening, I sat across from my sister for the first time since the dinner.

She looked different.

Not scared.

Angry.

“You’re really doing this?””

I stared at her.

“You tried to take my company.””

“I tried to correct an unfair situation.””

I almost couldn’t believe her.

“Unfair?””

“Yes.””

She leaned forward.

“You had everything.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You had Dad’s trust. Grandpa’s money. The business. Everyone respected you.””

I whispered:

“And you thought that meant you deserved it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

For once, she wasn’t pretending.

She believed it.

“I’m your brother.””

“And I’m your sister.””

She smiled sadly.

“That’s why I thought you’d understand.””

I stood up.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“That’s why I thought you’d forgive me.””

I walked toward the door.

Then she said something that stopped me.

“You want the truth?””

I turned around.

She held my gaze.

“The vacation wasn’t the thing I cared about.””

I said nothing.

She smiled.

“I wanted you to finally feel what it was like to lose everything.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

Her answer was quiet.

“Because I spent my whole life feeling like I had.””

I left without responding.

But as I walked away, my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*We found the original trust documents.*

I opened the attachment.

My hands went cold.

Because the truth about my inheritance wasn’t what Vanessa had claimed.

May you like

It was something even she didn’t know.

And it would change everything.
