Chapter 6: The Family Secret

For three days, I couldn’t stop thinking about Vanessa’s words.

Your money wasn’t the only thing you inherited.

I knew Vanessa.

She lied.

She manipulated.

She exaggerated.

But she rarely invented things completely.

She twisted the truth.

She used pieces of reality to create something believable.

And that scared me.

Because if there was even a small piece of truth hidden inside her accusation, I needed to know.

I went to my father’s office.

Not his company office.

The small room in his house where he kept old documents.

Receipts.

Tax files.

Family records.

The room smelled like old paper and dust.

Dad looked surprised when he saw me.

“What are you doing here?””

“I need answers.””

His expression changed.

“About Vanessa?””

“No.””

I closed the door.

“About me.””

He didn’t speak.

I placed the fake agreement on his desk.

Then the real one.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Dad looked at the papers.

Then away.

That reaction told me more than words could.

“You knew.””

He sat down.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“What does that mean?””

He took a deep breath.

“Before you started your company, there was money.””

I frowned.

“What money?””

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“My grandfather died when I was ten.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Dad looked uncomfortable.

“He left an inheritance.””

I stared at him.

“For me?””

Dad nodded.

“A trust.””

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“How much?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

“Enough to help you start your business.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“But I used my savings.””

“Yes.””

“Then I took loans.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Dad looked down.

“Because Vanessa knew.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“What?””

“She found the documents years ago.””

My voice dropped.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

Dad rubbed his forehead.

“She believed the money should have been shared equally.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So she knew I had money and decided I owed her?””

“No.””

Dad looked ashamed.

“She believed it was unfair that you were successful.””

I stood there silently.

Because suddenly everything connected.

The resentment.

The entitlement.

The way Vanessa acted like my success was something stolen from her.

“She knew.””

Dad nodded.

“She knew from the beginning.””

I looked at the window.

All these years.

Every bill.

Every payment.

Every time she accepted help.

She knew.

She wasn’t grateful.

She was angry.

“Why didn’t you stop her?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“Because I thought you wanted to help.””

I turned around.

“And when you realized?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

I walked out.

When I got home, Clara knew something had happened.

She always knew.

“What did you find?””

I sat beside her.

“My family knew about money I had before I even knew about it.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

I explained everything.

When I finished, Clara was quiet.

Then she asked:

“So Vanessa didn’t think you were lucky.””

“No.””

“She thought you were unfair.””

I nodded.

“And she built her entire life around that belief.””

My phone buzzed.

This time it wasn’t Vanessa.

It was a news alert.

I opened it.

A local business article.

The headline made my stomach drop.

*“Family Dispute Threatens Ownership of Rising Tech Company.””*

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My hands went cold.

Someone had leaked private information about my company.

Someone had claimed there was a dispute over ownership.

And attached to the article was one name.

The person who had provided the documents.

I looked at the screen.

Then at Clara.

Because Vanessa wasn’t trying to punish me anymore.

She was trying to take something.

And underneath the article was a quote from an unnamed source:

“He built the company using family resources and abandoned the people who supported him.””

I whispered one word.

“Vanessa.””

Then my email notification appeared.

A new message.

From my company’s legal department.

The subject line was:

*URGENT: Someone has filed a claim against your ownership rights.*

May you like

And attached was a document.

With my sister’s name on it.
