Chapter 8: The Truth Buried Under My Recovery
Nobody looked at me.
They looked at Daniel.
That was the cruelest part.
Not the accusation.
Not the video.
The silence afterward.
Because everyone was waiting for me to react.
They wanted anger.
A breakdown.
A scene.
But I had learned something during those months in rehabilitation.
Pain makes people expect you to collapse.
They forget it can also make you stronger.
Daniel stared at the frozen image.
His face had lost all color.
“That’s not real.””
Nobody answered.
He looked at me.
“Ethan, you have to believe me.””
I held up my hand.
“Stop.””
He stopped.
Because he knew.
For the first time in our friendship, he didn’t have control over the conversation.
“You told me there was evidence.””
“There is.””
“You told me Richard Whitmore was behind this.””
“He is.””
“You told me you were protecting me.””
“I was.””
I nodded slowly.
“Then explain the video.””
Daniel looked helpless.
“I can’t.””
That answer hurt more than a lie.
Because it meant he knew exactly what it looked like.
Brooke stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was different.
Smaller.
“You lied to me too?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew about the accident.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
“You knew.””
“I didn’t.””
“Your father told you.””
Brooke shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel laughed sadly.
“You really don’t know, do you?””
Her expression hardened.
“Know what?””
“That your father never planned to leave you in control.””
Brooke went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“Richard used everyone.””
He pointed at the video.
“That footage was edited.””
“Convenient.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“It sounds exactly like something a guilty person would say.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he reached into his pocket.
He pulled out his phone.
“I saved the original.””
Nobody moved.
He opened a file.
A second video appeared.
The same hospital room.
The same angle.
But longer.
The room watched.
Richard Whitmore stood beside my bed.
He looked calm.
Cold.
“This should be enough.””
Daniel’s voice could be heard.
“What if he wakes up?””
Richard laughed.
“He won’t remember anything.””
The video continued.
Daniel looked younger.
More afraid.
“I can’t do this.””
Richard turned.
“You already did.””
The room became silent.
Richard continued:
“Your fingerprints are on the transfer documents. Your name is attached to every account.””
Daniel’s face in the video went pale.
“You said nobody would get hurt.””
Richard smiled.
“People get hurt every day.””
The video stopped.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Daniel.
“You were trapped.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“But you still lied.””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
That was the truth.
Finally.
The kind that hurt because it wasn’t simple.
Daniel wasn’t innocent.
But he wasn’t the monster everyone thought he was.
He was someone who made one terrible decision and spent months trying to undo it.
My mother touched my shoulder.
“Ethan.””
I looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
I believed her.
And somehow that made it harder.
Because forgiveness was easier when someone didn’t deserve it.
It was much harder when they did.
A loud crash came from the ballroom entrance.
Everyone turned.
The security guards were down.
The doors slowly opened.
A man walked inside.
Richard Whitmore.
Brooke gasped.
“Dad?””
He looked around the room.
Then smiled.
“Quite the reunion.””
Nobody moved.
Richard adjusted his jacket.
“Ethan.””
I stared at him.
“You tried to kill me.””
He smiled.
“No.””
He walked closer.
“I tried to save my company.””
“By destroying my life?””
“Your life was already in my way.””
The honesty was terrifying.
Brooke looked at him.
“You knew?””
Richard looked at his daughter.
“I did what had to be done.””
She stepped back.
“You used me.””
“I protected our family.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You protected yourself.””
For the first time, Richard looked annoyed.
“Brooke, don’t be dramatic.””
I almost laughed.
The man who manipulated everyone in the room was accusing someone else of being dramatic.
Richard looked at me.
“You always had a weakness, Ethan.””
“What?””
“You trusted people.””
He smiled.
“That’s why this was so easy.””
My hands tightened.
“What did you do?””
Richard looked toward Daniel.
“Ask your friend.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“I won’t let you hurt him again.””
Richard laughed.
“You already did.””
Daniel froze.
Then Richard turned to me.
“Do you want to know the funniest part?””
I said nothing.
“The accident wasn’t supposed to leave you alive.””
The room gasped.
My mother grabbed my arm.
Richard continued.
“But then you survived.””
He looked at my wheelchair.
“And I thought you would spend the rest of your life broken.””
His smile disappeared.
“But you didn’t.””
He leaned closer.
“And that became a problem.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Richard looked around.
“Because there is one thing you don’t know.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
He smiled.
“Your accident didn’t just take away your ability to walk.””
He paused.
“It changed who owns your company.””
My face tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a document.
A document with my name on it.
“Your father created a protection clause.””
My mother froze.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“And now that you know the truth…”
May you like
He tore the paper in half.
“…you’re finally ready to hear what your father hid from you.””
