Chapter 7: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

The room became completely silent.

Not the uncomfortable silence from earlier.

Not the silence of people watching a public argument.

This was different.

This was the silence of people realizing they had been standing beside a disaster without knowing it.

My eyes stayed on Daniel.

My best friend.

The man who had held my hand when I woke up.

The man who told me I could rebuild my life.

The man who told me I wasn’t broken.

“Say something.””

My voice came out colder than I expected.

Daniel looked at me.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t say my name like you’re still the person who protected me.””

His face tightened.

“I did protect you.””

“Did you?””

I looked around the ballroom.

“Because right now, everyone who claimed to protect me seems to have known the truth while I was drowning in lies.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Listen to me.””

“Why?””

The question stopped him.

“Why should I listen to you?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because he knew.

He knew there was no easy explanation anymore.

My mother walked beside me.

“Ethan, we need to leave.””

I looked at her.

“Not yet.””

She frowned.

“This is dangerous.””

“So was spending nine months believing I was alone.””

My voice cracked slightly.

“And I survived that.””

I looked back at Daniel.

“I want the truth.””

Daniel lowered his head.

For the first time in years, I saw him look small.

Not weak.

Guilty.

“I never wanted this to happen.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He swallowed.

“It isn’t.””

The security guards were still near the entrance. Guests were pretending not to listen while obviously listening.

Brooke stood frozen beside Chad.

The woman who had spent the last hour trying to destroy me now looked like she was watching someone else destroy me.

Funny how quickly the world changed.

Daniel finally spoke.

“The day before your accident, you found something.””

I stared at him.

“About the company.””

He nodded.

“You discovered someone had been moving money through fake accounts.””

My mother looked at me.

I remembered.

I had found irregular transfers.

Millions disappearing through shell companies.

At the time, I thought it was corporate theft.

I never imagined it was personal.

“You knew.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because I helped you find it.””

That answer confused me.

“You helped me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why betray me?””

His expression broke.

“Because I found out who was behind it.””

Nobody moved.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Brooke’s father.

Except he wasn’t there.

The realization hit instantly.

“Where is Richard Whitmore?””

Brooke looked around.

Her face changed.

“He was supposed to be here.””

My mother quietly said:

“He left.””

Daniel nodded.

“Because he knew this was coming.””

I looked at him.

“You’re saying Brooke’s father caused the accident?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I’m saying he ordered someone to scare you.””

“Scare me?””

The anger inside me rose.

“They almost killed me.””

“I know.””

“You know?””

My voice sharpened.

“You know exactly what happened?””

Daniel looked away.

That was enough.

I felt sick.

“You were there.””

“No.””

“Then how do you know?””

He didn’t answer.

My mother stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

Her voice was firm.

“Tell him.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I followed the truck.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“What?””

“The night of the accident.””

I stared.

“I was behind you.””

The room disappeared.

The music.

The guests.

Everything.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“And you watched it happen?””

His eyes filled.

“I tried to stop it.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

The pain in his voice almost made me feel sorry for him.

Almost.

“I was too late.””

I looked away.

A memory flashed.

The rain.

The headlights.

The sound of metal crushing.

The moment I realized my body wouldn’t move.

Daniel had been there.

The entire time.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Richard Whitmore threatened you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course he did.””

“He said if I told you, he would destroy everything.””

“He already did.””

Daniel looked at me.

“No.””

His voice became serious.

“He was planning something worse.””

“What?””

Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a small drive.

“This.””

I stared.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

He looked toward the ballroom doors.

“Of who really owns Whitmore Holdings.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel handed it to me.

“Richard Whitmore wasn’t acting alone.””

My fingers closed around the drive.

“Who was helping him?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then whispered:

“The person who benefited most when you disappeared.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Before Daniel could answer, every phone in the ballroom vibrated.

Hundreds of screens lit up at once.

A video had been sent.

A live stream.

Everyone looked down.

I watched people’s faces change.

Confusion.

Shock.

Fear.

One guest turned his phone toward me.

“Mr. Carter…”

I looked.

And my blood froze.

The video showed me.

Not from tonight.

From nine months ago.

From the hospital.

Someone had recorded me unconscious.

And standing beside my hospital bed was Richard Whitmore.

But he wasn’t alone.

A second person stood beside him.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Someone I never expected.

Someone who smiled at the camera.

And said:

“Once Ethan Carter is gone, everything belongs to us.””

The video paused.

May you like

A name appeared on the screen.

*Daniel Hayes.*
