Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the House

Nobody slept that night.

Not after the photograph.

Not after knowing someone had been outside my father’s house watching us.

The police came.

They searched the property.

They found nothing.

No footprints.

No cameras.

No signs anyone had been there.

But I knew what that meant.

Whoever was watching us knew how not to be found.

By sunrise, the entire family was gathered in the living room.

For the first time in years, nobody was pretending.

No fake smiles.

No polite conversations.

Just fear.

My father sat across from me.

“I need to tell you everything.””

I looked at him.

“Finally.””

He accepted that.

“I met Diane because of your mother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She was Emma’s friend.””

Claire immediately looked up.

“What?””

My father nodded.

“Not a close friend.””

He looked ashamed.

“But someone your mother trusted.””

Diane.

A friend.

The letter made sense.

“She wasn’t trying to hurt us,” my father continued.

“Then why did she throw me out?””

His face tightened.

“Because she was scared.””

I almost laughed.

“Scared?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Claire.

“Of him.””

The room went silent.

“Who?””

My father looked down.

“The person who has been controlling everything.””

I waited.

He took a deep breath.

“Your grandfather.””

I froze.

“My grandfather died before I was born.””

My father shook his head.

“That’s what everyone believed.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

“Your grandfather was involved in illegal financial deals. When your mother found out, she tried to expose him.””

Claire nodded slowly.

“That’s why she hid everything.””

I stared at my father.

“And you?””

He closed his eyes.

“I helped him.””

The confession hurt.

Even though I expected it.

“You helped him?””

“When I was younger, I thought I was protecting the family.””

“You were protecting money.””

“Yes.””

He didn’t argue.

“I made choices I regret.””

“Then why did Mom disappear?””

His face changed.

“I don’t know.””

Claire interrupted.

“That’s not true.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stepped forward.

“Richard knows.””

My father stared at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“Your mother didn’t disappear randomly.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened?””

Claire took a breath.

“She found proof that your grandfather was still alive.””

The room went silent.

My voice came out small.

“Where?””

Claire looked toward me.

“Here.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She pointed at the floor.

“Under this house.””

My stomach dropped.

The house.

Again.

The house my mother knew.

The house she bought.

The house she hid secrets in.

“You knew?””

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

That was answer enough.

“You knew about this house.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me buy it?””

“I didn’t know it was the same house.””

Claire shook her head.

“You did.””

My father looked at her.

“What?””

“You knew.””

She stepped closer.

“Your mother told you before she vanished.””

My father went pale.

“I thought she was gone.””

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked at me.

“It means your mother left clues for both of you.””

I walked upstairs without waiting.

Nobody stopped me.

I went to my house.

My real home.

The place where all of this started.

I didn’t know why I trusted Claire.

I didn’t know why I believed my father.

But I knew one thing.

The answers were underneath me.

Literally.

I searched every room.

Every wall.

Every floorboard.

Until I reached the basement.

A basement I had barely used.

The previous owner had left boxes there.

I moved them aside.

Then I saw it.

A door.

Hidden behind shelves.

A door that wasn’t supposed to exist.

My hands shook as I opened it.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

I turned on my flashlight.

The air smelled old.

Like something untouched for decades.

At the bottom was a small room.

A room my mother had built.

Inside were shelves.

Documents.

Photos.

Recordings.

Everything.

My entire family’s history.

I picked up the first folder.

My name was on it.

*For Emma.*

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

But this one was different.

No mystery.

No hidden messages.

Just my mother’s handwriting.

*My daughter, if you found this room, then I know you finally have the truth.*

I sat down.

Tears filled my eyes.

*I need you to know one thing. Your father made mistakes, but he did not take me from you.*

I stopped.

My hands trembled.

*The person who destroyed our family is someone you have met. Someone who has been close to you your entire life.*

A noise came from upstairs.

I froze.

Someone was in the house.

I slowly stood.

The footsteps moved closer.

Closer.

Then a voice called from the top of the stairs.

A voice I knew.

“Emma?””

My blood ran cold.

Because it wasn’t my father.

It wasn’t Claire.

It wasn’t Lily.

It was Diane.

And she was crying.

“Please come out.””

I stepped forward.

“Why are you here?””

Silence.

Then Diane whispered:

“Because your mother wasn’t the only person who hid something in this room.””

The lights suddenly went out.

May you like

And in the darkness, I heard her say:

“Your mother left a message for me too.””
