Chapter 3: The Truth My Mother Left Behind

Nobody moved.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the old ceiling fan spinning above us.

I stared at Lily.

“What did you just say?””

She looked terrified.

“I’m sorry.””

“That’s not an answer.””

My voice came out colder than I expected.

Lily wiped her face.

“I didn’t know until yesterday.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

“Lily.””

But she shook her head.

“No, Dad. She needs to know.””

That was the first time I had ever heard Lily stand up to him.

And somehow that scared me more.

Because if my gentle little sister was willing to challenge him, whatever was on that flash drive had to be serious.

My father looked at me.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

I laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“You’re right. I don’t understand.””

I held up the flash drive.

“I don’t understand why my mother hid this.””

Silence.

“I don’t understand why you never told me about it.””

Silence.

“And I really don’t understand why you let Diane throw me out of this house three days ago.””

His face tightened.

“I made a mistake.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You made a choice.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

I walked to the desk in the corner and grabbed the old laptop sitting there.

My father watched me.

“Are you sure you want to see this?””

I looked at him.

“After everything you let happen, don’t ask me if I want the truth.””

The room became still.

I inserted the flash drive.

A single file appeared.

The name was simple.

“For Emma.””

My breath caught.

Emma.

My mother’s name.

I clicked it.

The screen went black.

Then a woman appeared.

Older than the pictures I remembered.

Tired.

But smiling.

My mother.

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

“Hi, sweetheart.””

Her voice broke something inside me.

I covered my mouth.

Diane quietly left the room.

Even she couldn’t watch.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re seeing this, it means I wasn’t able to tell you myself.””

My eyes filled instantly.

“I need you to know something first.””

She paused.

“I loved you more than anything in this world.””

I whispered her name.

The video continued.

“When I discovered the truth, I didn’t know who I could trust.””

The room changed.

My father looked away.

My mother continued.

“Your father will probably tell you I was confused. He will probably tell you I misunderstood what happened.””

My father closed his eyes.

“But I didn’t.””

I looked at him.

My heart started pounding.

My mother’s voice became softer.

“I found evidence that someone had been taking money from our family account.””

I froze.

Money.

“What?”” I whispered.

The video continued.

“At first, I thought it was an error. Then I found documents hidden in the office.””

My father sat down.

His face had gone pale.

I turned toward him.

“What documents?””

He didn’t answer.

My mother continued speaking.

“The person responsible wasn’t a stranger.””

The video paused for a second.

Then she said:

“It was someone inside this house.””

Nobody breathed.

I stared at my father.

The room felt smaller.

My mother’s final words before the video cut were:

“Emma, if you’re watching this, you need to know why I hid the evidence in your room.””

The screen went dark.

That was it.

No explanation.

No name.

Just silence.

I looked at the flash drive.

Then at the hidden box.

Then at my father.

“Your turn.””

He looked broken.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I stood up.

“You don’t get to call me that like everything is normal.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He had no answer.

Diane came back into the doorway.

“I think she deserves the whole truth.””

My father looked at her angrily.

“Don’t.””

But Diane stepped into the room.

For the first time in ten years, she looked afraid of him.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“There’s more,” she said.

I looked at her.

“What more?””

She swallowed.

“The box wasn’t the only thing hidden in that room.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

She pointed toward the wall.

“When we removed the panel completely…”

She stopped.

My father whispered:

“We found another compartment.””

I stared at him.

“What was inside?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

One sentence.

One sentence that made my blood run cold.

*Don’t trust your father. He wasn’t the one who hid the evidence.*

I looked up slowly.

Because at that exact moment, my father’s phone began ringing.

And when he looked at the screen…

I saw the name of the person calling.

May you like

The person who supposedly couldn’t have known we were in that room.

The person who knew the secret before any of us did.
