Chapter 5: The Father Who Never Died

Marcus held his sister's shoulders.

“Victoria, what did you just say?””

She looked exhausted.

“Not here.””

“Then where?””

“Somewhere nobody can hear us.””

Marcus glanced toward the mansion.

Through the illuminated windows, he could see Samuel speaking with Richard.

He knew leaving the estate was dangerous.

But if Victoria was telling the truth, the entire history of his family had been built on a lie.

He led her toward the old greenhouse at the back of the garden.

It had once been their mother's favorite place.

After her death, Marcus had ordered the gardeners to preserve it exactly as she had left it.

Victoria stepped inside and touched a dusty wooden table.

“She would have loved what you did with this place.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You disappeared for twelve years. You don't get to talk about Mom as if nothing happened.””

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

“Why didn't you contact me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Four years after I disappeared. I sent a letter to your office.””

Marcus frowned.

“I never received it.””

“Because it was returned.””

“Why?””

“Someone had changed your mailing address and redirected your personal correspondence.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

“Who?””

Victoria looked directly at him.

“Dad.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Dad died fifteen years ago.””

Victoria reached into her coat.

She pulled out a photograph.

It showed an older man sitting inside a private dining room.

His hair was almost completely gray, and his face was thinner.

But Marcus recognized him immediately.

Arthur Carter.

His father.

Alive.

Marcus gripped the table.

“Where was this taken?””

“Zurich. Two years ago.””

“That's impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

Victoria placed the photograph beside a second one.

This showed Arthur standing beside Linda.

They were shaking hands.

The photograph was dated eight months before Marcus's accident.

Marcus stared at it.

“Linda knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She was introduced to him through a financial adviser named Charles Whitmore.””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Whitmore was our father's old business partner.””

Victoria nodded.

“He helped Arthur disappear after the company collapsed.””

Marcus sank into a chair.

His father had built Carter Global's original business.

He had been a brilliant salesman, but a terrible businessman.

When the company faced bankruptcy, Arthur had borrowed heavily, gambled on risky investments, and nearly lost everything.

Marcus had spent years rebuilding the business after his father's supposed death.

He remembered the funeral.

The closed casket.

The private service.

The grief.

“Why fake his death?”” Marcus asked.

Victoria took a long breath.

“Because he was being investigated for fraud. He had transferred millions of dollars into offshore accounts. When the authorities began closing in, he staged his death and left the country.””

Marcus shook his head.

“And you helped him?””

“No!””

Victoria's voice cracked.

“I was twenty-four. I believed he was dead. I discovered the truth when I found an account statement hidden in his old office.””

“What happened?””

“I confronted him. He told me I had misunderstood everything. Then he offered me money to keep quiet.””

Marcus stared at her.

“And you refused.””

“I threatened to go to the police.””

Victoria's eyes filled.

“That night, my car was forced off the road. I survived, but everyone believed I had drowned.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“You were in that boating accident?””

Victoria nodded.

“Arthur arranged it. He wanted everyone to believe I was gone.””

“Why didn't you come to me?””

“Because he told me you were involved.””

Marcus stood abruptly.

“What?””

“He showed me documents with your signature. He said you had approved the transfers and that you had agreed to sacrifice me if the investigation became dangerous.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I would never do that.””

“I know that now.””

“How?””

“Because I found the original documents. The signatures were forged.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

His father had used his identity.

The same method Linda had used.

It was more than a coincidence.

It was a family tradition of betrayal.

“Why did you come back now?”” he asked.

Victoria removed a small flash drive from her pocket.

“Because Arthur is preparing to take control of Carter Global.””

Marcus frowned.

“He already tried through Linda.””

“Linda was never supposed to own the company permanently. She was supposed to transfer it into a private holding structure controlled by Arthur.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Why would she agree?””

“Because Arthur promised her a share of the company worth more than twenty million dollars.””

“And Jasmine?””

“Jasmine was supposed to receive enough money to disappear.””

Marcus looked toward the mansion.

“Does Jasmine know?””

Victoria hesitated.

“I don't think she knows everything.””

“Does she know our father is alive?””

“No.””

Marcus paced the small greenhouse.

For years, he had blamed his father for teaching him that business was about winning at any cost.

He had tried to become the opposite.

He had built a company with rules.

He had established a foundation.

He had promised employees they would never be treated as disposable numbers.

And now his father had returned to take it all.

“What is on the drive?”” Marcus asked.

“Records of payments, phone conversations, and instructions sent between Arthur, Linda, and Richard.””

Marcus stopped.

“Richard?””

Victoria nodded.

“Your former CFO wasn't just investigating the fraud. He was approached by Arthur.””

“Is Richard involved?””

“He refused to help. That's why he was forced out.””

Marcus studied her face.

“Are you certain?””

“I heard the recording myself.””

She handed him the drive.

Before Marcus could respond, a noise came from outside.

A branch snapped.

Victoria immediately extinguished the small lamp.

“Someone followed me.””

Marcus moved toward the door.

“Stay behind me.””

He stepped into the garden.

A figure stood near the stone path.

“Who's there?””

The figure stepped into the light.

Jasmine.

Her face was pale.

“I heard everything.””

Marcus lowered his cane.

“Jasmine, what are you doing here?””

She looked at Victoria.

“Is it true?””

Victoria remained silent.

Jasmine began shaking.

“Is my mother working with Arthur Carter?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Jasmine covered her mouth.

Then she looked at him.

“There's something you need to know.””

“What?””

Jasmine reached into her pocket and produced a folded piece of paper.

“Mom gave me this two weeks before your accident. She told me to keep it hidden.””

Marcus unfolded it.

It was a medical authorization form.

His name appeared at the top.

But the document contained a second section.

A request for an experimental neurological procedure.

The authorization bore Marcus's signature.

And beneath it was another signature.

Dr. Adrian Cole.

Marcus looked at Jasmine.

“What is this?””

Jasmine's voice trembled.

“Mom told me it was part of your treatment. She said the procedure would make you dependent on her care.””

Victoria snatched the paper.

Her eyes moved quickly across the text.

Then she looked horrified.

“This wasn't a rehabilitation procedure.””

Marcus felt cold.

“What was it?””

Victoria swallowed.

“It was a request to transfer you to a private facility and place you under long-term medical guardianship.””

Samuel's voice suddenly came from behind them.

“Mr. Carter!””

Marcus turned.

Samuel was hurrying across the garden with his phone in his hand.

“Something has happened.””

“What?””

“The corporate registry has received a new filing.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What filing?””

Samuel handed him the phone.

A notification from the state corporate office appeared on the screen.

*Emergency ownership amendment submitted.*

Marcus read the details.

His entire controlling interest in Carter Global Holdings had been transferred to a newly established private trust.

The filing was dated that evening.

The beneficiary was Arthur Carter.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“How did they do this?””

Samuel's expression was grave.

“Someone used an authorization token connected to your old executive account.””

Marcus turned toward Victoria.

“Can they legally take the company?””

“Not if the filing is fraudulent,” Samuel replied.

“But we need to stop the certification before the morning.””

Marcus looked toward the mansion.

Linda had disappeared.

“Where is my wife?””

Samuel hesitated.

“That's the other problem.””

He showed Marcus a photograph taken by the front security camera.

Linda was standing beside a black sedan.

A man was holding the rear door open for her.

Marcus recognized the man immediately.

Arthur Carter.

His father.

Alive.

And standing in the driveway of the mansion Marcus had built.

By midnight, the mansion was surrounded by investigators.

But Arthur had already left.

Linda was nowhere to be found.

Jasmine sat in the library, giving a formal statement.

Victoria remained with Marcus.

Samuel had contacted the company's board and requested an emergency meeting for the following morning.

Marcus spent the night reviewing the evidence.

At 3:17 a.m., he received a call from an unfamiliar number.

He answered.

“Marcus Carter.””

A familiar voice replied.

“My son.””

Marcus stood.

“Father.””

A soft chuckle came through the phone.

“You sound disappointed.””

“You're supposed to be dead.””

“And yet here we are.””

“Why?””

“Because you have something that belongs to me.””

Marcus looked at the documents covering his desk.

“The company?””

Arthur laughed.

“Don't flatter yourself. I built that company.””

“You bankrupted it.””

“I made mistakes.””

“You stole from employees.””

“I made difficult decisions.””

“You faked your death.””

“I survived.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“And you tried to have me killed.””

A pause.

Then Arthur said quietly, “I never wanted you dead.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“Really?””

“I wanted you out of the way. There is a difference.””

“Tell that to the truck driver.””

Silence.

Then Arthur spoke again.

“You always were too emotional to understand business.””

Marcus stared at the window.

“What do you want?””

“Come to the Carter Global headquarters at nine tomorrow morning. Bring Samuel. Bring your sister.””

“And Linda?””

“She'll be there.””

“Why?””

“Because she has something you don't.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

Arthur's voice became colder.

“Your original medical authorization.””

The call ended.

Marcus slowly lowered the phone.

Victoria looked at him.

“What did he say?””

Marcus turned toward her.

“He wants us at the headquarters.””

“That's a trap.””

“I know.””

“Then we shouldn't go.””

Marcus looked at the company logo on the folder before him.

Carter Global.

His father's name had started it.

His blood, sweat, and twenty years of work had rebuilt it.

He had no intention of surrendering it.

“We're going,” he said.

At 8:45 the following morning, Marcus entered Carter Global's headquarters.

He wore a dark charcoal suit.

His cane was gone.

He walked slowly, but without assistance.

Employees stopped working as he passed.

Some stared.

Others whispered.

A few approached him with tears in their eyes.

“Mr. Carter!””

“Sir, we heard you were recovering.””

Marcus shook hands with them.

“I'm back.””

He entered the executive boardroom.

Twelve board members were seated around the long mahogany table.

Samuel stood beside him.

Victoria sat near the windows.

At the opposite end, Linda was waiting.

She looked immaculate.

Her hair was perfectly styled, and a diamond necklace rested against her black dress.

Beside her sat Arthur.

Marcus stopped.

His father rose.

“Welcome home, son.””

Marcus looked at him for several seconds.

Then he said something that made Arthur's smile disappear.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Arthur laughed softly.

“Still dramatic.””

He gestured toward the empty chair.

“Sit down. We have a company to discuss.””

Marcus remained standing.

“No. We have a crime to discuss.””

Arthur's expression hardened.

May you like

He opened a black folder.

“Then let's begin.””
