Chapter 3: The First Time Marcus Stood Up
The sound of the upstairs door echoed through the mansion.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Samuel rushed toward the staircase.
“Stay here, Mr. Carter.””
Marcus reached for his wheelchair controls.
“Samuel, don't go alone.””
Richard grabbed the attorney's sleeve.
“Don't bother. Whoever was upstairs already knows we're here.””
Samuel pulled free.
“Then perhaps you'd like to explain why you're protecting them.””
Richard's expression darkened.
“I'm not protecting anyone.””
Linda stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous. Richard, you have no right to bring your personal problems into my home.””
Richard looked at her.
“Your home?””
He gave a short, humorless laugh.
“You really have convinced yourself of that, haven't you?””
Linda's eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.””
“That's what you told me three years ago.””
Jasmine looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Neither answered.
Marcus watched Richard closely.
Three years ago.
That was long before the accident.
Long before Linda had started asking questions about his estate.
Long before his medical records had disappeared from the hospital.
“What happened three years ago?”” Marcus asked.
Richard took a breath.
“I discovered irregularities in the company's acquisition accounts. Large sums were being moved through shell companies. I brought the issue to the board.””
“And?””
“The investigation was shut down.””
“By whom?””
Richard looked at Linda.
“She was involved.””
Linda let out an angry laugh.
“Don't listen to him. He's a disgruntled former employee.””
Richard reached into his briefcase and removed a folded letter.
“Then explain this.””
He handed it to Marcus.
The letter was dated three years earlier.
It was addressed to Richard and signed by Marcus.
Marcus read it carefully.
It authorized an internal review of several suspicious corporate transactions.
At the bottom was his signature.
But something else caught his attention.
A handwritten note in the margin.
If anything happens to me, contact Samuel Reed.
Marcus looked up.
“I don't remember writing this.””
Richard nodded.
“You didn't.””
“Who did?””
“Someone who knew your signature well enough to reproduce it.””
Marcus looked toward Samuel.
Samuel took the letter and studied it.
“This is a serious matter.””
Richard nodded.
“It was the first time I realized someone was using Marcus's identity to authorize financial transactions.””
Marcus felt a chill move through him.
“How long?””
“Possibly five years. Maybe longer.””
“And you waited until now to tell me?””
Richard's face hardened.
“I tried to tell you. But every time I requested a meeting, your assistant canceled it. Then I was accused of stealing company funds.””
Marcus remembered.
Richard had resigned after a bitter disagreement with the board.
Marcus had been furious.
He had received documents showing that Richard had diverted company money into an unauthorized account.
He had trusted the documents.
Now he wondered who had prepared them.
“Who gave me those accusations?”” Marcus asked.
Richard looked at Linda.
“Your wife.””
Jasmine stepped forward.
“That's a lie!””
Richard turned toward her.
“Your mother delivered the documents personally.””
Linda's voice became sharp.
“Because they were true!””
“Were they?”” Marcus asked.
Linda stared at him.
“You were too busy running your empire to notice what was happening in your own house.””
Marcus studied her face.
“You knew Richard was innocent.””
Linda said nothing.
Richard removed another document.
“This is a copy of the original accounting report. The money was transferred into three accounts. Two belonged to companies controlled by the same person.””
Samuel examined the page.
“And the third?””
Richard hesitated.
“The third account was opened under a trust.””
“Whose trust?”” Marcus asked.
Richard slowly looked at Jasmine.
Jasmine's face turned white.
“What?””
Richard placed a page on the table.
“Carter Heritage Trust.””
Marcus frowned.
“That trust was created for my grandchildren.””
“You don't have grandchildren,” Jasmine snapped.
“Exactly.””
Marcus stared at the document.
The trust had been created four years earlier using a legal structure intended to preserve family wealth for future generations.
But the beneficiary designation had been changed.
Instead of Marcus's future descendants, it listed Jasmine.
And someone else.
Samuel read the second name aloud.
“Evelyn Hayes.””
Richard closed his eyes.
His wife's name.
Marcus looked at him.
“Why is your wife listed as a beneficiary?””
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Then he said something that changed the room.
“Because she's the person who helped me uncover the fraud.””
Linda laughed nervously.
“Your wife? What does she have to do with this?””
Richard turned toward her.
“Evelyn was the trust administrator.””
“That's impossible.””
“She discovered the forged instructions and refused to approve the payments.””
Jasmine shook her head.
“Then why is her name there?””
“Because someone added it without her permission.””
Marcus looked at Samuel.
“Can we trace the amendment?””
Samuel nodded.
“We can request the original filing and the authentication records.””
Richard leaned closer.
“But there's something else.””
Marcus waited.
“The night of your accident, Evelyn received a call from an unknown number. The caller told her that if she continued investigating the company, her family would be next.””
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
“Why didn't she tell the police?””
“She did. But the caller used a prepaid phone, and the threat was dismissed as unsubstantiated.””
“And the accident?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“Evelyn found the vehicle registration for that black SUV. It belonged to a security contractor hired by a company connected to Bellmont Strategic Partners.””
Samuel immediately took out his phone.
“I'm contacting the investigators.””
Linda moved toward the front door.
Jasmine followed.
“Mom, where are we going?””
“Upstairs.””
“We need to leave.””
Linda stopped and turned.
“You're not going anywhere without me.””
Marcus watched them.
Something was wrong.
They weren't frightened by Richard's accusations alone.
They were frightened by the possibility that someone else would discover what they had done.
“Linda,” Marcus said.
She turned.
“What now?””
“Sit down.””
“I've had enough.””
“Then answer one question.””
She stared at him.
“Ask.””
“Who knew about my rehabilitation?””
Linda's expression changed.
Marcus continued.
“Who knew I could move my legs again?””
Jasmine looked confused.
“What?””
Marcus didn't take his eyes off Linda.
“Who?””
Linda's mouth opened.
For the first time, she seemed unable to find an answer.
Marcus slowly placed both hands on the armrests.
Samuel noticed immediately.
“Sir?””
Marcus leaned forward.
His shoulders trembled.
He pressed his palms against the leather.
Then he pushed.
His legs shook beneath him.
His knees nearly buckled.
But he held on.
One second.
Two.
Three.
And then Marcus Carter rose from his wheelchair.
He stood.
The room fell completely silent.
Jasmine stumbled backward.
“What...?””
Linda's mouth dropped open.
Marcus straightened as much as his injured body allowed.
His breathing was heavy, and pain shot through his lower back.
But he remained standing.
He looked directly at his wife.
“You made one fatal mistake.””
Linda stared at his legs.
“You can walk?””
“Not very well.””
“But—”
“You assumed that because I was sitting down, I wasn't paying attention.””
Samuel moved closer, ready to support him.
Marcus lifted one hand.
“I'm all right.””
He took one careful step forward.
Then another.
His wheelchair stood behind him like an abandoned prop in a performance that had finally ended.
Jasmine's eyes filled with panic.
“Mom, you told me he would never recover!””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Who told you that?””
Jasmine swallowed.
“I... I meant the doctors.””
“Which doctor?””
She looked at Linda.
Linda's face had become almost colorless.
Marcus's voice remained calm.
“Samuel, I want every medical record from the rehabilitation center. Every phone call. Every visitor log. Every payment.””
Samuel nodded.
“Consider it done.””
Richard moved toward the window.
“Marcus, there's something you need to understand. Your recovery wasn't the only secret.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What else?””
Richard pulled a small USB drive from his pocket.
“Evelyn recovered a recording from the security system outside your hospital room. It was deleted from the hospital server, but she saved a backup.””
Samuel took the drive.
“What's on it?””
Richard looked at Linda.
“Your wife visiting someone at the hospital two hours before Marcus's accident.””
Linda shook her head violently.
“That recording proves nothing.””
Richard continued.
“The person she met was the surgeon who signed the medical certification.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Why would you meet my surgeon before the accident?””
Linda's lips trembled.
“I didn't.””
Richard placed a printed still image on the table.
It showed Linda standing beside a man in a hospital corridor.
The timestamp was clearly visible.
But Marcus wasn't looking at Linda anymore.
He was looking at the man.
He knew that face.
Dr. Adrian Cole.
The physician who had overseen his emergency treatment after the crash.
The same physician who had later declared that Marcus was unlikely to regain independent movement.
Marcus felt the room tilt.
“Samuel,” he whispered.
“Yes, sir?””
“Find Dr. Cole.””
Samuel nodded.
Richard shook his head.
“You don't understand. He's already been found.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“What do you mean?””
Richard took out his phone.
He showed Marcus a message received less than five minutes earlier.
It contained only eight words.
Dr. Cole is dead. His office was burned.
Jasmine began crying.
Linda stood perfectly still.
Marcus looked at the message again.
Then he noticed something at the bottom.
A second notification had appeared.
An unknown sender.
One photograph.
And a short message.
Stop looking for the person who ordered your accident. Look for the person who saved you.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Who sent this?””
Richard shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Samuel looked toward the front entrance.
“Mr. Carter, we need to get you somewhere secure.””
But Marcus wasn't listening.
He zoomed in on the photograph.
It showed a hospital room.
His hospital room.
And beside the bed, holding his unconscious hand, was a woman whose face had been hidden from every official report.
A woman Marcus hadn't seen in twelve years.
May you like
His younger sister.
*Victoria Carter.*
