Chapter 8: The Secret Margaret Died Protecting
Daniel's hand tightened around the document.
For the first time since Ethan had entered the boathouse, the man who had controlled every conversation looked genuinely unsettled.
"You're confused," he told Evelyn.
The girl shook her head.
"No.""
"Evelyn, you've been frightened and manipulated.""
"You told me my mother abandoned me.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"You told me Lily was a replacement.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"That's enough.""
Evelyn flinched, but she kept speaking.
"You told me if I ever saw Ethan Hawthorne, I should tell him my mother had stolen money from him.""
Ethan stared at Daniel.
"What money?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"None of it was true. My mother told me everything before she died.""
Grace moved closer.
"What did she tell you?""
Evelyn looked at her.
"That my real father was a good man who never knew I existed.""
Daniel lunged toward the chair.
Grace stepped between them.
"Don't touch her.""
He shoved Grace aside.
She stumbled against a wooden post, pain shooting through her shoulder.
Ethan seized Daniel by the coat.
"You're finished.""
Daniel struggled, driving his elbow into Ethan's chest. They crashed against a workbench, sending rusted tools clattering onto the floor.
Evelyn scrambled from the chair.
Her hands were still tied, and she nearly fell.
Grace rushed to her.
"Come here.""
Evelyn stumbled into her arms.
Grace quickly loosened the ties.
Across the boathouse, Ethan and Daniel grappled near the dock.
Daniel struck Ethan across the face.
Ethan staggered, then drove his brother backward against a support beam.
"You let me mourn you!"" Ethan shouted.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"And you let Father turn my life into a funeral!""
"You could have come home!""
"Home?"" Daniel spat.
"You inherited everything. The mansion. The company.
The name. You got to play the perfect son while I spent twelve years hiding from men who wanted me dead.""
Ethan tightened his grip.
"So you came back to threaten my daughter?""
"I came back to recover what belongs to me.""
"Nothing belongs to you!""
Daniel's gaze flicked toward Evelyn.
"She does.""
Evelyn pressed herself against Grace.
"No, I don't!""
The girl's voice cracked through the boathouse.
Daniel went silent.
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
"My mother told me about you. She said you would come back one day and pretend you had always loved me.""
Daniel's face darkened.
"Margaret poisoned you against me.""
"She said you wanted to use me to get money.""
Ethan looked at Daniel.
"Is that true?""
Daniel said nothing.
Ethan released him with a shove.
Daniel stumbled, then straightened his coat.
"You know nothing about what happened between Margaret and me.""
"Then explain it.""
Daniel glanced at the open door.
Rain blew across the floorboards.
For a moment, he seemed to consider running.
Then he laughed.
"Very well. You want the truth? Margaret wasn't the innocent woman you remember.""
Grace felt Evelyn's body stiffen beside her.
Daniel continued.
"She discovered what I was doing with the company. She found the accounts, the offshore transfers, and the names of the people who were paying us. She threatened to expose everything.""
"What did you do?"" Ethan demanded.
"I tried to reason with her.""
"You threatened her.""
"She was destroying my life!""
Ethan stared at him.
"And you think that excuses what happened to her?""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"I didn't kill Margaret.""
Grace's head snapped up.
"You're lying.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Are you certain?""
Grace felt the boathouse tilt around her.
The memories were returning in fragments, but the truth remained tangled in fear and confusion.
She remembered Margaret calling for help.
She remembered a bottle breaking.
She remembered a door closing.
And she remembered someone telling her that if she spoke, Lily would be next.
Daniel watched her face.
"Tell them, Grace.""
She swallowed.
"Tell them what?""
"What you found in the nursery.""
Ethan turned toward her.
Grace closed her eyes.
Then the final piece of the memory returned.
The night Margaret died, Grace had entered the east wing after hearing Lily crying.
She had found Margaret on the nursery floor, struggling to breathe.
A broken glass lay beside her.
Daniel had been standing near the window, his expression cold.
He had told Grace that Margaret had taken too much medication and that the ambulance was already on its way.
But when Grace reached for the telephone, he caught her wrist.
He told her that if she called the police, he would make sure Lily disappeared.
Grace had believed him.
She had been twenty-six, terrified, and responsible for a child who had already lost her mother.
She had called the ambulance.
She had told the police that she had found Margaret after she collapsed.
And she had buried the memory because remembering it had felt like risking Lily's life all over again.
Grace opened her eyes.
"I saw you in the nursery that night.""
Daniel's expression remained still.
"You told me Margaret had taken medication.""
"She had.""
"You told me not to call the police.""
"I told you to wait for the ambulance.""
"You threatened Lily.""
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Be careful.""
Grace stepped forward.
"No. I'm finished being careful.""
Her voice shook, but she kept going.
"You told me Margaret was sick. You told me she had been confused for weeks. You said nobody would believe a maid over a Hawthorne.""
Ethan stared at her.
"You never told me any of this.""
Grace looked at him.
"I was afraid.""
"Of him?""
"Of what he could do to Lily.""
Ethan's expression collapsed.
For years, he had believed Grace was simply a quiet, dependable employee.
He had never understood that she had been carrying a secret that could have destroyed her life.
Daniel began to laugh.
"How touching.""
Grace turned toward him.
"You killed Margaret.""
Daniel's smile faded.
"I didn't kill her.""
"You made sure she couldn't get help.""
He stared at Grace.
Then he said the words that would change everything.
"Margaret was already dying when I arrived.""
Ethan went pale.
"What?""
Daniel looked at him.
"She had been poisoned.""
Silence fell.
Evelyn gripped Grace's hand.
Daniel continued.
"Someone had been giving her medication she shouldn't have been taking. She was weak, confused, and barely able to stand. I came to persuade her to give me the documents. She refused.""
Ethan shook his head.
"You're blaming someone else.""
"I'm telling you what happened.""
"Who poisoned her?""
Daniel looked toward the door.
"Sabrina.""
Grace's stomach tightened.
Ethan's face hardened.
"Why?""
"Because she wanted the company.""
Daniel's voice grew colder.
"She had been working with the people who were moving money through my accounts. Margaret discovered that Sabrina was stealing from the foundation. She threatened to expose her.""
Ethan looked stunned.
"Sabrina was involved with the company?""
"She was involved with everything.""
Daniel leaned against the workbench.
"She arranged the transfers, forged signatures, and used Margaret's illness to make it appear that she was mentally unstable. When Margaret realized what was happening, she began collecting evidence.""
"The letters," Grace whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly.""
Ethan's hands clenched.
"Then why did you threaten Margaret?""
"Because I wanted the documents.""
"You were trying to protect Sabrina?""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"I was trying to protect myself.""
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
"By then, the accounts were collapsing. The people I worked with wanted their money back. Sabrina promised she could make the evidence disappear if I helped her retrieve it.""
"And Evelyn?"" Ethan asked.
"She was leverage.""
Evelyn began crying.
Daniel looked away.
"I never intended to hurt her.""
Grace's voice turned icy.
"You tied her to a chair.""
"I needed her to cooperate.""
"She's a child!""
Daniel slammed his hand against the workbench.
"And I'm her father!""
Evelyn stepped forward.
"No, you're not.""
Daniel turned.
The girl lifted her chin.
"My mother told me my father was a man named Thomas Vale. She said he died before I was born.""
Daniel's face changed.
Ethan looked at Evelyn.
"Thomas Vale?""
Evelyn nodded.
"She showed me a photograph. She said he was kind. She said he wanted to marry her, but he died in an accident before he knew about me.""
Grace stared at the girl.
The name meant nothing to her.
But Daniel looked as though he had been struck.
"Where did you see that photograph?"" he demanded.
"In the letters.""
"Which letters?""
"The ones you stole.""
Daniel's mouth fell open.
Evelyn continued.
"My mother told me that Thomas wasn't a rich man. He was a teacher. He wanted to take her away from everything. But you told her he was dead, and you told everyone that you were my father.""
Daniel's face turned crimson.
"That's enough!""
Evelyn recoiled.
Grace pulled her close.
Ethan stepped toward Daniel.
"Who is Thomas Vale?""
Daniel looked from Ethan to Grace.
Then he began to smile.
It was a horrible smile, full of desperation.
"Thomas Vale was your father's illegitimate son.""
Ethan froze.
"What?""
"Your father had another family. He kept them hidden for years. Thomas was older than you and me, but he never knew who his father was.""
Daniel's eyes moved toward Evelyn.
"And now you understand why Margaret had to hide her.""
Grace felt the truth beginning to take shape.
Evelyn wasn't Daniel's daughter.
She was the granddaughter of the man who had built the Hawthorne fortune.
And if the family records were correct, she had a claim to an inheritance that could destroy everything Sabrina had tried to steal.
Ethan stared at Daniel.
"You kidnapped your own niece.""
Daniel's smile vanished.
"She's not my niece.""
"She's my niece.""
The words came out of Ethan with quiet certainty.
He turned toward Evelyn.
"Your mother was part of my family. That makes you part of mine.""
Evelyn stared at him, uncertain whether to believe it.
Then a siren sounded outside.
Red and blue lights swept across the boathouse windows.
The police had arrived.
Daniel looked toward the door.
His hand slipped into his coat.
Grace saw the movement.
"He's reaching for something!""
Ethan lunged.
Daniel pulled out a small black phone and hurled it against the floor.
The screen shattered.
Then he shoved past Ethan and ran toward the dock.
Two officers rushed through the entrance.
"Police! Stop!""
Daniel jumped onto the narrow pier.
The rain made the boards slick.
He stumbled, caught himself, and turned toward the river.
For one second, he looked back at Ethan.
"You should have stayed away!""
Then he jumped.
The river swallowed him.
The officers rushed to the edge, shouting into their radios.
Ethan stood motionless in the rain.
Grace held Evelyn against her side.
And on the floor of the boathouse, the broken phone began to ring.
The screen was cracked, but one notification remained visible.
A message from an unknown number.
*Sabrina has already confessed. The real evidence is with the child.*
Ethan turned toward Evelyn.
"What evidence?""
The girl slowly reached into the pocket of her yellow cardigan.
She pulled out a tiny silver locket.
"My mother told me to give this to Lily.""
Grace stared at it.
The locket bore the same engraving as the silver ribbon.
A small star.
May you like
And beneath it, two words.
*For my daughters.*
