Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Locked Door

Ethan ran.

Grace was right behind him.

They tore through the east-wing corridor, past the silent portraits and the closed doors, until they reached the main staircase.

The foyer had descended into chaos.

A waiter lay beside a shattered serving tray. Two guests stood pressed against the wall. Mrs. Collins's colleague, Helen, was crying near the entrance to the sitting room.

And Marcus was struggling with a man in a charcoal suit.

The man had one arm wrapped around Lily's shoulders.

His other hand held a black leather case.

“Let go of her!”” Ethan shouted.

The man turned.

For a moment, Grace saw only a stranger's face: pale eyes, a narrow mouth, and a thin scar running from his left temple toward his hairline.

Then the man smiled.

“Ethan.””

Ethan stopped at the foot of the stairs.

“Release my daughter.””

“Your daughter?”” The man glanced down at Lily.

“That's an interesting word to use.””

Lily struggled against his arm.

“Daddy!””

Grace moved toward them, but the man tightened his grip.

“Stay where you are,” he warned.

Marcus caught the man's wrist.

The stranger twisted sharply, driving his elbow into the guard's ribs. Marcus staggered, and the man shoved Lily toward him before stepping backward.

Lily stumbled free.

Grace caught her.

“Are you hurt?””

Lily shook her head, burying her face against Grace's shoulder.

The man straightened his jacket.

“I apologize for the disturbance. This was supposed to be a private family conversation.””

Ethan moved between him and Lily.

“You have three seconds to tell me who you are.””

The man glanced at the guests.

“Your wife knew me quite well.””

Ethan's hands curled into fists.

“My wife is dead.””

“Yes,” the man said softly.

“And she left a great many unfinished matters behind.””

Grace recognized the cold satisfaction in his voice.

This was not a man who had stumbled into a family secret.

He had come expecting to find something.

And he was angry that Grace had disrupted his plans.

Sabrina appeared at the top of the staircase.

Her gold gown was torn at the hem, and her expression had changed from outrage to something close to relief.

“You weren't supposed to come here,” she said.

The man looked up at her.

“Neither were you supposed to fail.””

The words were quiet.

But every person in the foyer heard them.

Sabrina went pale.

Ethan turned toward her.

“You know him.””

She descended one step.

“I've never seen him before.””

The man laughed.

“Still lying, Sabrina? Even now?””

She gripped the banister.

“Security should remove this man immediately.””

Marcus straightened with visible effort.

“Sir, I need his name.””

The stranger reached inside his jacket.

Marcus moved forward, but the man withdrew a business card and held it between two fingers.

“Julian Cross,” he said.

“Attorney. I represent the interests of a private client.””

Ethan didn't take the card.

“You entered my home, grabbed my daughter, and assaulted my security guard.””

“I was attempting to speak to the child.””

“Without her father's permission?””

Julian's smile disappeared.

“Perhaps you should ask why your wife arranged for her firstborn to disappear.””

Ethan went motionless.

Grace felt Lily's fingers tighten around her hand.

Sabrina came down another step.

“Julian, stop talking.””

He looked at her with contempt.

“You've had years to do this properly. Instead, you brought a syringe to a gala and nearly ruined everything.””

A murmur spread through the guests.

Ethan's gaze snapped toward Sabrina.

“Explain.””

Sabrina lifted her chin.

“I don't know what he's talking about.””

Julian shook his head.

“Then perhaps I should tell them about the medication you purchased under a false name.””

Sabrina's expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Grace remembered the syringe skidding across the marble.

She remembered Lily's frightened words.

She said it would make me sleep.

Ethan stepped toward Sabrina.

“What medication?””

“Nothing,” Sabrina said quickly.

“He's trying to manipulate you.””

Julian opened his leather case.

“I have copies of the invoices, the messages, and the instructions you gave the private nurse.””

Sabrina lunged toward him.

“Don't you dare!””

Marcus caught her arm.

The guests erupted into overlapping questions.

Ethan raised his voice.

“Everyone, stay where you are.””

Then he turned toward Julian.

“What did you intend to do to my daughter?””

Julian closed the case.

“Nothing permanent. I was instructed to ensure she slept through a conversation that should never have reached her ears.””

Ethan's face twisted with fury.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to understand that the person who hired Sabrina wanted information, not a dead child.””

Grace felt Lily go rigid beside her.

Ethan moved so quickly that Marcus had to step between him and Julian.

“Who hired her?””

Julian's eyes flickered toward Sabrina.

“That's a question you should ask the woman in gold.””

Sabrina pulled free of Marcus.

“You promised you would keep my name out of this.””

Julian looked at her.

“And you promised the child would never be harmed.””

“I didn't harm her!””

“You brought the syringe.””

“I was supposed to give it to the nurse!””

The words burst out before Sabrina could stop them.

Silence fell.

Ethan stared at her.

“The nurse?””

Sabrina covered her mouth.

Grace looked at the syringe in the napkin, still lying on the console where the security team had placed it.

“You said it wasn't meant for Lily.””

“It wasn't!””

“Then why did Lily believe you were going to give it to her?””

Sabrina's eyes flashed.

“Because she misunderstood what I said!””

Lily lifted her face from Grace's shoulder.

“No, I didn't.””

Her voice was small, but clear.

Sabrina looked at the child.

Lily took a trembling breath.

“You told me I had to drink something before the lights went out. You said if I didn't, someone would come and take me away.””

Ethan closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, his expression had changed.

“Marcus, call the police. Tell them we have a witness to an attempted assault, a man who entered the property without authorization, and evidence of a planned drugging.””

Julian laughed.

“You're making a mistake.””

“No,” Ethan said.

“I'm correcting one.””

He turned toward Marcus.

“Take him into the security office. Keep him separated from Sabrina. Do not let either of them speak to each other.””

Marcus nodded.

Two additional guards approached Julian.

The lawyer didn't resist, but as he passed Ethan, he leaned close enough to whisper.

“You should be careful, Hawthorne. The person who hired us is closer to your daughter than you think.””

Ethan grabbed his sleeve.

“Who?””

Julian smiled.

“You've already read her letter.””

Then the guards escorted him away.

For several seconds, Ethan remained where he was, staring after the man.

Grace gently guided Lily toward the sitting room.

But before they reached the doorway, Sabrina called out.

“Ethan, please.””

He didn't turn.

“I can explain everything.””

“You've had all evening to explain.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

He faced her.

“By bringing a syringe into my house?””

“By preventing something worse.””

“What could possibly be worse than threatening my daughter?””

Sabrina looked at Lily.

For the first time, her expression held something that resembled genuine regret.

“Lily wasn't supposed to be involved.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Then why was she?””

Sabrina's shoulders sagged.

“Because someone believes she is the only person who can lead us to Evelyn.””

Grace stopped walking.

Ethan went still.

“What does my daughter have to do with Evelyn?””

Sabrina looked at the silver ribbon around Grace's wrist.

“Margaret left something with Lily before she died. Something she never told anyone about.””

Grace's hand closed around the ribbon.

“What?””

Sabrina shook her head.

“I don't know exactly what it is. I only know Margaret told someone that Lily would carry it until the right moment.””

Ethan looked at his daughter.

Lily immediately began shaking her head.

“I don't have anything, Daddy.””

Sabrina took a step forward.

“Think carefully, sweetheart.””

Grace moved in front of her.

“Don't speak to her.””

Sabrina ignored Grace.

“Your mother gave you something. A toy, a necklace, a picture. Something she said you must keep safe.””

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't remember.””

Sabrina's face tightened.

“Then perhaps you should remember before somebody else gets hurt.””

Ethan seized Sabrina's arm.

“That's enough.””

She winced.

“Let go.””

He released her.

“You're going to tell the police everything you know.””

Sabrina looked toward the front doors.

Outside, blue lights flashed against the windows.

The police had arrived.

She looked back at Ethan and whispered, “You don't understand. If they find Evelyn before the others do, they will kill her.””

Ethan's voice was ice.

“Who are the others?””

Sabrina's lips trembled.

Before she could answer, a phone began ringing in the sitting room.

Mrs. Collins hurried out, holding Ethan's mobile.

“Sir, I'm sorry. Your phone was left upstairs, and this call came through on the house line.””

Ethan took the receiver.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice answered.

“Ethan Hawthorne?””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Evelyn Vale.””

Grace felt the silver ribbon slip between her fingers.

The voice continued.

“I think I should tell you something before Sabrina does.””

Ethan looked toward the woman in gold.

Sabrina had gone completely white.

Evelyn spoke again.

May you like

“Margaret wasn't my only mother.””

Then the line went dead.
