Chapter 8: The Last Secret
The name on my phone felt impossible.
Ethan Carter.
The man Vanessa said was dead.
The man connected to every secret she had buried.
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa watched my reaction.
She knew.
She knew exactly who had messaged me.
“You contacted him,” I said.
Her silence answered.
“You knew he was alive.””
Vanessa looked tired.
Not sorry.
Tired.
“Michael, you don’t know the whole story.””
“I’m starting to.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“You’re hearing pieces from people who want to destroy me.””
I held up my phone.
“Then why is Ethan texting me?””
Her face changed.
A tiny crack.
“He shouldn’t be.””
“Why?””
“Because he’s dangerous.””
I almost laughed.
“Now he’s dangerous?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He always was.””
“And you were with him.””
Her eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
But only for a second.
“Why did you lie?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were afraid.””
She said nothing.
The flash drive sat on the table between us.
A tiny piece of plastic holding years of secrets.
I took it to my laptop.
Vanessa moved forward.
“Michael.””
“No.””
I plugged it in.
The first file opened.
A recording.
The kitchen.
Vanessa.
Lily.
But this one was different.
It was not just cruelty.
It was a conversation.
Vanessa was on the phone.
“I told you I could handle him.””
A man’s voice answered.
Ethan.
“You’re getting emotional.””
“I’m not.””
“You’re letting the girl become a problem.””
I stopped breathing.
The girl.
Lily.
Vanessa continued:
“She looks like him.””
The man laughed.
“That’s why you hate her?””
“No.””
Vanessa’s voice lowered.
“She reminds me of everything I lost.””
I looked at the screen.
Everything became quiet.
The recording continued.
“I married him,” Vanessa said.
“For what?””
“Security.””
“And?””
“To get close.””
My hands shook.
“Close to what?””
Ethan answered.
“His daughter.””
I closed the laptop.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
David looked at me.
“Michael…”
I stood.
“She planned this.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
But I couldn’t tell if they were real.
“Michael, listen.””
“No.””
“I did terrible things.””
The room went silent.
“But you don’t understand why.””
I stared at her.
“Try.””
She looked upstairs.
At Lily.
Then at Mason.
“I lost everything because of Ethan.””
“And you punished me?””
“I thought you were the reason.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“I saved someone from him.””
“You ruined my life.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“He ruined your life.””
Vanessa looked away.
Then whispered:
“I never wanted Mason to know.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Know what?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
“What?””
She looked at Mason.
“Mason isn’t Ethan’s son.””
The room froze.
Mason stared at her.
“What?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked between them.
“What are you saying?””
She whispered:
“Ethan raised him.””
“But?””
“He wasn’t his father.””
Mason’s face broke.
“Mom…”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
The truth was finally coming out.
After years.
After lies.
After pain.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
From Ethan.
This time, only one sentence.
*Ask Vanessa who Mason’s real father is.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked back at me.
May you like
And I knew.
Whatever came next would change all of our lives forever.
