Chapter 6: The Truth About Ethan
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily’s face.
That little red mark.
That frightened look.
And then I saw Vanessa’s face when she realized Mason was talking.
Not guilt.
Fear.
She wasn’t afraid of what she had done.
She was afraid of what I would discover.
The next morning, I met Claire at a small diner.
She was younger than I expected.
Maybe around my age.
She looked exhausted, like carrying this secret had aged her.
“You really don’t remember me?”” she asked.
I shook my head.
“I remember helping someone.””
“That was me.””
She looked down at her coffee.
“You saved my life.””
I stayed quiet.
She continued.
“Ethan was dangerous.””
“Mason’s father?””
She nodded.
“He wasn’t the man Vanessa told you he was.””
“What did she tell me?””
“That he was a victim.””
I frowned.
“She said he died in an accident.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“Of course she did.””
“What happened?””
Claire looked toward the window.
“That night, Ethan attacked me in the parking lot.””
I listened carefully.
“You stepped in.””
“I called the police.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“The police arrived.””
She hesitated.
“Ethan ran.””
I leaned forward.
“What does Vanessa have to do with that?””
“She was waiting in his car.””
The words hit me.
“Waiting?””
“She was his girlfriend.””
I felt sick.
“And Mason?””
“Was born later.””
I stared at the table.
“So Vanessa married me because of some connection to Ethan?””
Claire shook her head.
“Not just a connection.””
She reached into her bag.
Then she placed another document in front of me.
A police report.
My name was on it.
The date was the same night I helped Claire.
But there was something else.
A witness statement.
From Vanessa.
I read the first line.
*“Michael Thompson attacked Ethan Carter without reason.””*
My hands went numb.
“She lied.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because Ethan was arrested.””
I looked up.
“What?””
“He was arrested for another crime connected to that night.””
“And Vanessa?””
“She disappeared.””
I stared at the report.
“She blamed me.””
“She needed someone to blame.””
I looked away.
“Then why marry me?””
Claire answered:
“Because years later, she found you.””
The room went silent.
“She found me?””
“She searched your name.””
I thought about our first meeting.
Vanessa at the bookstore.
The way she smiled.
The way she said it felt like fate.
It wasn’t fate.
It was planned.
“She knew exactly who I was.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“How did she get close to me?””
Claire hesitated.
“Through Lily’s mother.””
My eyes opened.
“What?””
“Your first wife.””
The mention of Lily’s mother felt like another wound opening.
“My first wife died before Vanessa and I met.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa knew about your daughter.””
I felt my heartbeat change.
“She knew Lily existed?””
“Yes.””
“Before we met?””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“No.””
People in the diner looked over.
I lowered my voice.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire shook her head.
“It’s not.””
“Why would she care about my daughter?””
Claire looked directly at me.
“Because Ethan had a daughter too.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She thought you took everything from him.””
My blood ran cold.
“She thought Lily was connected to you and Ethan?””
“No.””
Claire’s voice became almost a whisper.
“She thought hurting Lily was a way to punish you.””
I felt anger rise.
But beneath the anger was something worse.
Fear.
Because suddenly every strange moment made sense.
Every time Vanessa complained about Lily.
Every time she acted distant.
Every time she treated Mason differently.
She wasn’t just cruel.
She had been carrying a hatred I didn’t understand.
My phone buzzed.
A message from David.
*Michael, you need to come home.*
I called immediately.
“What happened?””
His voice was tense.
“Vanessa came here.””
My grip tightened.
“Where are the kids?””
“They’re with me.””
“What did she say?””
A pause.
Then David said:
“She didn’t come to apologize.””
“What did she want?””
May you like
His voice dropped.
“She came looking for Mason.””
