Chapter 9: The Family Secret Worth Killing For

Nobody moved.

Lucas stood with Lily behind him.

Anna clutched her daughter.

Gabriel held his weapon toward the staircase.

And Anthony Moretti smiled as if he had just walked into a family dinner.

“Put the guns down,” Anthony said.

Lucas didn't blink.

“Tell your men to leave.””

Anthony glanced at the armed guards surrounding the room.

“They work for me.””

“They work for whoever pays them.””

Anthony smiled.

“Then perhaps I should remind you who signs their checks.””

He pressed the black device.

A large screen above the fireplace came alive.

An old video appeared.

A hospital corridor.

A young Anna walking with a newborn baby.

Then another woman entered the frame.

Margaret Vale.

She approached Anna and handed her an envelope.

Anna watched the footage, horrified.

“I remember that night.””

Anthony turned toward her.

“Of course you do.””

Lucas looked at the screen.

“What is this?””

“Evidence,” Anthony replied.

“Of what?””

“That your daughter was never supposed to survive.””

Anna's knees weakened.

Lucas reached back and took her hand.

Anthony continued.

“Fifteen years ago, I discovered that Anna had given birth to a child carrying the Moretti name. I couldn't allow an unknown woman to raise the heir to my empire.””

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

“You mean you couldn't allow Lucas to have something you couldn't control.””

Anthony's eyes narrowed.

“Watch your mouth.””

Gabriel stepped forward.

“You faked my death. You tried to steal his daughter. You destroyed Anna's life. And now you stand here pretending you did it for the family?””

Anthony's expression remained cold.

“I did what was necessary.””

Lucas looked at his father.

“You ordered Margaret to take Lily.””

“Yes.””

“And when Anna escaped?””

“I instructed Vincent to keep you separated.””

Lucas shook his head.

“You let me believe she abandoned me.””

“You were becoming distracted.””

“She's my daughter!””

Anthony's voice rose.

“She was a threat!””

Lily flinched.

Lucas immediately turned and crouched beside her.

“It's okay, sweetheart.””

She looked at him.

“Daddy, why does Grandpa hate me?””

Lucas's face tightened.

Anthony looked at the child.

Then he gave a small smile.

“I don't hate you, little one.””

Lily shook her head.

“You made Mommy cry.””

Anthony's smile disappeared.

For a moment, the entire room was silent.

Then Gabriel lowered his weapon slightly.

“She's six years old, Father. Look at her.””

Anthony turned away.

“Enough.””

He pressed the device again.

The screen changed.

A series of bank transfers appeared.

Lucas stared at the numbers.

The accounts belonged to companies he controlled.

Millions of dollars had been transferred over several years.

Some payments went to Victor.

Others went to Margaret.

And several went to an account registered under Gabriel's false identity.

Lucas looked at his brother.

“You were taking money from the company?””

Gabriel's expression changed.

“I was trying to survive.””

Anthony laughed.

“Your brother has always been a thief.””

Gabriel raised his weapon again.

“Don't.””

Anthony ignored him.

Then he turned toward Lucas.

“Your empire was built on my money. My connections. My decisions. You were only ever the face.””

Lucas stared at the screen.

“Why show me this?””

“Because Victor is right.””

Lucas's eyes narrowed.

“About what?””

“You need to surrender control.””

Anthony stepped closer.

“Victor has the men. Gabriel has the documents. I have the accounts. You have nothing left except a frightened woman and a little girl.””

Lucas looked toward Lily.

Then back at his father.

“You're wrong.””

Anthony smiled.

“Am I?””

Lucas's voice became steady.

“I have something you never understood.””

“What?””

“A family.””

At that exact moment, a phone vibrated in Marco's pocket.

He checked it discreetly.

A message from the security team.

*EXTERNAL ACCESS RESTORED. POLICE UNITS APPROACHING.*

Marco looked at Lucas.

Lucas gave the smallest nod.

But Anthony noticed.

“What was that?””

Marco slipped the phone away.

“Nothing.””

Anthony raised his weapon.

“Search him.””

Two guards approached.

Gabriel suddenly moved.

He grabbed the nearest man by the shoulder and slammed him against the staircase railing.

Gunfire erupted.

Lucas pulled Anna and Lily behind a marble pillar.

“STAY DOWN!””

Marco fired toward the ceiling lights.

The room plunged into darkness again.

People shouted.

Footsteps thundered.

Then came the sound of breaking glass.

Lucas felt Lily's tiny hand gripping his jacket.

“Daddy?””

“I'm here.””

“My inhaler.””

Lucas reached into his pocket.

It was gone.

He checked again.

Nothing.

He remembered leaving it in the car after the examination.

Lily began coughing.

Lucas felt panic rise.

“Marco!””

“Boss!””

“Get the medical kit!””

Marco rushed toward the hallway.

Anthony's voice came through the darkness.

“You see, Lucas? This is what happens when you bring weakness into our family.””

Lucas turned toward the sound.

“You call a six-year-old child weak?””

Anthony stepped into the emergency light.

“Love makes people careless.””

Lucas raised his weapon.

“No. It makes them worth protecting.””

A shot rang out.

Anthony staggered backward.

His shoulder hit the wall.

Gabriel stood at the top of the staircase, his gun smoking.

“That's for the hospital,” he said.

Anthony looked at his oldest son.

Then he laughed.

“You still think you're the good one.””

Gabriel lowered his weapon.

“No.””

He looked at Lily.

“I just know what a child deserves.””

Outside, police sirens grew louder.

Marco returned with the medical kit.

Dr. Harris was behind him.

He rushed toward Lily.

“Lucas, let me see her.””

Lily was breathing rapidly.

Her small hands trembled.

Dr. Harris checked her condition and immediately prepared her prescribed medication from the emergency kit Anna had brought earlier.

“Stay with me, sweetheart.””

Lucas held her hand.

“Look at me, Lily.””

She looked up.

“Remember your blue house?””

She nodded weakly.

“Tell me about it.””

Lily tried to speak.

“There's… a garden.””

“Good. What's in the garden?””

“Flowers.””

“What color?””

“Yellow.””

Lucas smiled.

“That's my favorite color too.””

Dr. Harris continued monitoring her.

After several moments, Lily's breathing began to settle.

Lucas kissed her forehead.

“That's my brave girl.””

Anna was crying silently beside them.

Gabriel stood several feet away.

He watched Lucas holding Lily.

Then he looked down at his hands.

For seventeen years, he had imagined returning to the Moretti mansion.

He had imagined revenge.

He had imagined watching his father lose everything.

He had never imagined seeing a little girl remind him what family was supposed to mean.

The police entered the mansion minutes later.

Anthony was taken into custody.

Victor was arrested at the Brooklyn shipping terminal after Marco provided the location of his meeting with Anthony.

But as the officers escorted Anthony outside, he called Lucas's name.

“Lucas!””

Lucas turned.

His father looked older now.

Smaller.

Less like a king and more like a tired man who had finally run out of places to hide.

“You think this is over?””

Lucas said nothing.

Anthony continued.

“You have no idea what you've inherited.””

Lucas stepped closer.

“I inherited a family that spent fifteen years hurting innocent people.””

Anthony laughed.

“You inherited an empire.””

Lucas shook his head.

“No.””

He glanced toward Anna and Lily.

“I inherited a daughter.””

Anthony's expression changed.

Then the police car door closed.

For the first time in Lucas's life, his father had no final word.

At the hospital, Lily was sleeping peacefully.

A small oxygen monitor rested beside her bed.

Anna sat in the chair, holding her daughter's hand.

Lucas stood near the window.

He had not moved for nearly an hour.

Dr. Harris entered.

“She is stable.””

Lucas turned.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes. We'll continue monitoring her, but she's doing much better.””

Lucas exhaled.

“Thank you.””

Dr. Harris nodded.

Then he looked toward Anna.

“She should be able to go home after further observation.””

Anna smiled weakly.

“Thank you, Doctor.””

When he left, Lucas pulled a chair beside the bed.

Anna looked at him.

“You saved her.””

Lucas shook his head.

“We saved her.””

Anna studied his face.

“You came for us.””

“I should have come fifteen years ago.””

She looked down.

“Lucas…”

“I know an apology won't give you those years back.””

“No, it won't.””

“But I want to be there now. If you'll let me.””

Anna was silent.

Then she glanced at Lily.

The little girl was sleeping with her fingers curled around the turquoise inhaler.

“She needs time,” Anna whispered.

Lucas nodded.

“So do I.””

Anna reached for his hand.

It was a small gesture.

But Lucas held it as if it were something precious.

An hour later, Gabriel appeared in the hospital corridor.

He stood outside Lily's room.

Lucas stepped out.

“What are you doing here?””

Gabriel looked through the glass.

“I wanted to see if she was okay.””

“She's stable.””

Gabriel nodded.

Then he looked at his younger brother.

“I'm leaving.””

Lucas studied him.

“Where?””

“Somewhere far away.””

“You could stay and answer for what happened.””

Gabriel gave a faint smile.

“I spent seventeen years answering for things I didn't do.””

“You also took money from my company.””

Gabriel nodded.

“I did.””

“And you helped Victor.””

“I thought I could control him.””

Lucas looked away.

“You nearly got my daughter killed.””

Gabriel lowered his head.

“I know.””

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Gabriel removed something from his coat.

An old silver locket.

He handed it to Lucas.

“Give this to Anna.””

Lucas opened it.

Inside was a tiny photograph of Anna holding newborn Lily.

On the other side was a handwritten note.

*For the little girl who deserved better.*

Lucas looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

“Margaret kept it.””

Gabriel stepped backward.

“Tell Anna I'm sorry.””

Then he turned.

Lucas watched him walk down the corridor.

“Gabriel.””

His brother stopped.

Lucas looked at him.

“Why did you really help Anna that night?””

Gabriel didn't turn around.

For a moment, he stood completely still.

Then he answered.

“Because I knew what it felt like to be unwanted by our father.””

He continued walking.

Lucas looked down at the locket.

And suddenly understood that the worst thing Anthony Moretti had ever done wasn't stealing money, faking deaths, or building an empire through fear.

It was teaching his sons that love was something they had to earn.

At 6:30 a.m., Lucas's phone rang.

Marco.

“Boss, we've finished searching the estate.””

“What did you find?””

“A locked safe behind Anthony's study.””

“Open it.””

“We did.””

Lucas waited.

Marco's voice became quieter.

“There's a document inside with your name on it.””

“What kind of document?””

“A last will and testament.””

Lucas frowned.

“My father died eight years ago. Why would there be a new will?””

“Because it was signed yesterday.””

Lucas stood.

“What?””

“There's something else. The document names you as the sole heir to the Moretti estate.””

Lucas looked toward Anna.

Then toward his sleeping daughter.

“What does that mean?””

Marco paused.

“It means your father legally transferred everything to you before tonight's incident.””

Lucas closed his eyes.

His father had spent fifteen years trying to control his life.

And now, even after his arrest, he had left Lucas one final trap.

A fortune.

An empire.

And a family legacy built on lies.

Lucas looked through the hospital window.

Lily stirred in her sleep.

He whispered:

“Not anymore.””

But Marco wasn't finished.

“Boss?””

“Yes?””

“We found a second document.””

Lucas's expression hardened.

“What is it?””

Marco took a breath.

“A trust fund established in Lily's name. It was created the day she was born.””

Lucas froze.

“How much?””

“Forty million dollars.””

Lucas stared at the hospital window.

Then Marco said the words that made everything even more disturbing.

“There's a handwritten instruction attached. It says the money must remain untouched until Lily turns eighteen.””

Lucas swallowed.

“Who signed it?””

Marco answered quietly.

“Your father.””
