Chapter 10: The Child Who Was Never Forgotten
Lucas read the sentence again.
*If Lily survives, she must never learn what happened to her twin brother.*
For several seconds, the hospital corridor seemed to disappear.
He could hear nothing except his own heartbeat.
“Marco,” he said slowly, “read that again.””
“I already checked it twice, boss.””
“Tell me exactly what it says.””
Marco repeated the sentence.
Lucas stared at the phone.
“Find the birth records. Every hospital, every doctor, every person who handled Anna's delivery. I want names, dates, everything.””
“I'm on it.””
“And Marco?””
“Yes?””
“Don't tell Anna yet.””
Lucas ended the call.
He stood outside Lily's room, staring through the glass.
His daughter was sleeping peacefully.
A small bandage covered the spot where the doctor had placed an IV. Her turquoise inhaler rested on the bedside table.
A twin brother.
Six years.
A child he had never known existed.
Lucas entered the room.
Anna looked up from her chair.
“What's wrong?””
He tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
She stood.
“Lucas?””
He sat beside her and placed the locket on the table.
“There's something in my father's documents.””
Anna looked at him.
“What?””
Lucas took a breath.
“It says Lily had a twin brother.””
Anna went completely still.
The color drained from her face.
“No.””
Lucas reached for her hand.
“Anna, listen—”
“No.””
She pulled away.
“Don't.””
“Did you know?””
Anna's eyes filled with tears.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.””
Lucas felt the floor shift beneath him.
“You knew?””
Anna covered her mouth.
“I was told he died.””
“When?””
“The night Lily was born.””
Lucas stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Anna began crying.
“Because I didn't know what to believe. Because your father told me the baby had been taken away. Because I was terrified they would come back for Lily.””
Lucas lowered his voice.
“What happened?””
Anna looked toward the sleeping child.
“Lily was born first. Then her brother. They were both so small.””
She wiped her cheeks.
“The doctor said they needed special care. I was exhausted. I could barely stay awake.””
Lucas listened without moving.
“Margaret came into the room. She told me there had been complications. She said the little boy hadn't survived.””
“Did you see him?””
Anna shook her head.
“No.””
“Did you see a death certificate?””
“No.””
“Did you see his body?””
Anna closed her eyes.
“No.””
Lucas stood.
“Then how could you know he was dead?””
Anna looked at him desperately.
“Because they told me!””
Her voice broke.
“I had just given birth. I was alone. I was frightened.
They said I couldn't keep both babies alive. They said Lily was strong enough to go home, but her brother needed treatment.””
Lucas felt anger rise inside him.
“Who said that?””
“Margaret.””
“Who else?””
“Your father's doctor. Dr. Samuel Reed.””
Lucas remembered the name.
The private physician who had served Anthony Moretti for decades.
The man who had signed the documents.
The man who had disappeared shortly after Anthony's supposed death.
Lucas took Anna's hands.
“Listen to me. If our son is alive, I'm going to find him.””
Anna shook her head.
“What if he's not?””
“Then we'll know the truth.””
She looked at him.
“And if he is?””
Lucas glanced at Lily.
“Then we'll bring him home.””
At 8:15 a.m., Marco arrived with a thick folder.
He entered the hospital room and stopped when he saw Anna.
“Boss.””
“Tell me.””
Marco opened the folder.
“We found the original birth registration. Two babies. Lily Carter Moretti and a boy registered as Daniel Moretti.””
Anna began crying again.
“Daniel.””
She whispered the name as though she had been waiting six years to say it.
Marco continued.
“The hospital record says the boy was transferred to a private neonatal facility in Connecticut. The transfer was approved by Dr. Reed.””
Lucas frowned.
“Which facility?””
“Vale Children's Medical Center. It closed five years ago.””
“Where is Reed?””
“His official address is in Westchester. But the house has been empty for months.””
Lucas studied the documents.
“Any record of the boy's death?””
Marco shook his head.
“None.””
Lucas looked at Anna.
“That's enough for me.””
She held her hands together.
“Can we find him?””
“We will.””
Marco placed another photograph on the table.
It showed an older woman leaving a pharmacy.
Margaret Vale.
“She was seen near the old medical center three days ago,” Marco said.
Lucas's eyes narrowed.
“Where is she now?””
“At a small house outside Stamford.””
“Get a car.””
Marco hesitated.
“Boss, there's something else.””
Lucas looked at him.
“Go on.””
“The trust fund was created under a company controlled by Anthony. But the payments didn't stop after his supposed death.””
“Who maintained it?””
“Monthly transfers came from an account registered to Margaret.””
Anna looked up.
“Margaret was paying for him?””
Marco nodded.
“Someone was.””
Lucas looked at the photograph.
“Then she knows where our son is.””
Margaret opened the door before Lucas could knock twice.
She looked exhausted.
Her silver hair was untidy, and her hands trembled when she saw him.
“Lucas.””
He stepped inside.
“Where is my son?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
For a moment, she seemed unable to breathe.
Then she whispered:
“I wondered when you would find out.””
Lucas's voice became cold.
“Where is he?””
Margaret walked toward a small table.
She picked up a photograph.
A little boy with dark hair sat in a wheelchair beside a window. He was smiling at someone outside the frame.
On the back was a date from six months earlier.
Lucas took the photograph.
His hands began to shake.
“Is this Daniel?””
Margaret nodded.
“He's alive.””
Lucas closed his eyes.
Anna had been right to keep hoping.
Their son was alive.
“Where is he?””
Margaret sat down.
“Under another name. Daniel Vale.””
Lucas looked at her.
“You stole my child.””
“I protected him.””
“You lied to his mother.””
Margaret began crying.
“I know.””
“You let her believe he was dead.””
“I was afraid Anthony would find him.””
Lucas slammed the photograph onto the table.
“Anthony is in prison.””
Margaret looked up.
“You think that ends everything?””
Lucas went still.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret clasped her hands.
“Daniel was born with a serious heart condition. The doctors said he might not survive his first year. Anthony wanted him removed from the family because he believed a sick heir would weaken the succession.””
Anna's voice came from the doorway.
“And you agreed?””
Margaret turned.
Anna stood beside Marco.
Her eyes were full of tears, but her voice was steady.
“You took my baby.””
Margaret bowed her head.
“Yes.””
“You told me he was dead.””
“Yes.””
“I buried an empty space in my heart for six years.””
Margaret began sobbing.
“I know.””
Anna stepped closer.
“No. You don't know.””
She pointed at the photograph.
“That little boy was my son. I wanted to hold him. I wanted to hear him cry. I wanted to watch him grow.””
Her voice broke.
“You stole all of that.””
Margaret didn't defend herself.
Instead, she reached into a drawer and pulled out a small envelope.
“Daniel is in a rehabilitation center in Connecticut. His heart condition was treated when he was three. He still needs regular care, but he's doing well.””
Lucas took the envelope.
Inside was the address.
“Why are you telling us now?””
Margaret looked toward Anna.
“Because Anthony ordered me to move him again last night.””
Lucas's expression hardened.
“Where?””
“I don't know. I refused.””
“Who has him?””
Margaret hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“Dr. Reed.””
The drive to Connecticut felt endless.
Anna sat beside Lucas in the back seat, holding the photograph of Daniel.
Lily was asleep between them.
She had been discharged after the doctors confirmed her breathing was stable, but they had insisted on careful monitoring and follow-up appointments.
Lucas looked at his daughter.
Then at the photograph.
Two children.
One he had just begun to know.
One he had never been allowed to meet.
Anna touched his arm.
“Do you think he'll recognize us?””
Lucas shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“What if he doesn't want to come?””
“Then we'll give him time.””
Anna nodded.
She looked at the photograph again.
“He has your eyes.””
Lucas smiled faintly.
“And your smile.””
For a moment, they sat quietly.
Then Lily stirred.
“Mommy?””
Anna leaned toward her.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Where are we going?””
Anna brushed her hair.
“To meet someone special.””
“Who?””
Lucas looked at her.
“Your brother.””
Lily blinked.
“I have a brother?””
Lucas nodded.
“Yes.””
She thought about it.
Then she smiled.
“Can he play with me?””
Anna began to cry.
Lucas kissed Lily's forehead.
“If he wants to, sweetheart.””
Lily looked down at the photograph.
“Is he little?””
“About your age,” Anna whispered.
Lily studied his face.
Then she said something that made both parents fall silent.
“Maybe he was lonely.””
Anna covered her mouth.
Lucas looked out the window.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
His voice cracked.
“Maybe he was.””
The rehabilitation center stood behind a row of trees.
It was a quiet building with wide windows and a small garden.
Lucas entered with Anna and Lily.
Marco remained outside with two trusted guards.
A receptionist looked up.
“Can I help you?””
Lucas showed her the photograph.
“We're looking for Daniel Vale.””
The receptionist studied the image.
Then she looked at Lucas.
“I'm sorry. We can't release patient information.””
Anna stepped forward.
“Please. I'm his mother.””
The receptionist hesitated.
“Do you have identification?””
Anna handed over her documents.
The receptionist checked them.
Her expression changed.
“Please wait here.””
She disappeared through a door.
Lucas looked at Anna.
She was trembling.
He took her hand.
“You don't have to do this alone.””
Anna nodded.
A few minutes later, a nurse returned.
“Daniel is in the garden.””
Lucas felt his throat tighten.
“Can we see him?””
The nurse smiled gently.
“Of course.””
She led them down a corridor.
At the end was a glass door opening onto the garden.
A little boy sat on a bench.
He had dark hair.
A small scar near his chin.
And a blue sweater.
He was drawing something on a piece of paper.
Anna stopped walking.
“Daniel.””
The boy looked up.
His eyes moved from Anna to Lucas.
Then to Lily.
He didn't recognize them.
Why would he?
He had spent six years believing another woman was his mother.
Anna knelt several feet away.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Do I know you?””
Anna's face crumpled.
“No, darling.””
She tried to smile.
“But I've been waiting a very long time to meet you.””
The boy looked confused.
Lucas crouched beside Anna.
“My name is Lucas.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Are you a doctor?””
Lucas almost laughed.
“No.””
“Then why are you here?””
Lucas glanced at Anna.
“Because we have something important to tell you.””
Daniel looked down at his drawing.
“I don't like important things.””
Lily stepped forward.
“Hi.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Hi.””
“My name is Lily.””
He nodded.
“I'm Daniel.””
Lily smiled.
“I know.””
She held up her turquoise inhaler.
“Sometimes I need this when my breathing gets funny.””
Daniel looked at it.
“I have medicine too.””
“Do you?””
He nodded.
“Every day.””
Lily considered this.
Then she held out the drawing she had brought from the hospital.
It showed two children standing beneath a large yellow sun.
“Do you want to draw with me?””
Daniel looked at her for a long moment.
Then he moved along the bench to make room.
Anna covered her mouth.
Lucas reached for her hand.
Their children were sitting together.
After six years of lies, the family had finally found its way into the same garden.
Dr. Reed arrived twenty minutes later.
He was an older man with a silver tie and a leather briefcase.
The moment he saw Lucas, he stopped.
“Mr. Moretti.””
Lucas stood.
“Dr. Reed.””
The doctor looked toward Daniel.
“I assume Margaret told you.””
“She told us enough.””
Reed sighed.
“You don't understand the situation.””
Lucas stepped closer.
“Then explain it.””
The doctor looked at Anna.
“I was following instructions.””
“Whose instructions?”” Lucas asked.
“Your father's.””
Lucas's jaw tightened.
“And when Anthony died?””
Reed looked away.
“I continued his arrangements.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel's treatment was expensive. The trust paid for everything. His care, his medication, his rehabilitation.””
Anna stared at him.
“You could have told me.””
“I was instructed not to.””
“You could have let me see him!””
Reed lowered his eyes.
“I was afraid.””
Lucas took a step forward.
“Everyone in this family has used fear as an excuse.””
Reed opened his briefcase.
“I brought something.””
He removed a sealed document.
It was a letter addressed to Lucas.
The handwriting belonged to Anthony.
Lucas unfolded it.
*My son,*
*If you are reading this, then I am no longer able to protect the family from its own history. Daniel was never meant to be a secret forever. He was the child I feared would inherit the weaknesses of this family, yet he may be the only one capable of changing it.*
*The money in his trust was not a reward. It was an apology I was too proud to deliver.*
*I cannot undo what I did to Anna, to Gabriel, or to you. But I can ensure that both children have a future beyond the Moretti name.*
*Do not make the mistake I made. Do not turn your children into heirs before allowing them to become children.*
Lucas folded the letter.
He felt no forgiveness.
Not yet.
Perhaps never.
But he understood something.
His father had finally admitted the truth.
And it was too late for him to repair the damage.
Lucas looked at Dr. Reed.
“Daniel is coming home with us.””
The doctor nodded.
“His medical team will need to coordinate his care.””
“Then coordinate it.””
Anna took Daniel's hand.
“Would you like to come with us, sweetheart?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Will I still get my medicine?””
“Yes.””
“Will I still see my nurse?””
“Yes.””
“Can I bring my drawings?””
Anna smiled through tears.
“Every single one.””
Daniel glanced at Lily.
“Can she come too?””
Lily giggled.
“I'm already coming!””
For the first time, Daniel smiled.
That evening, Lucas returned to Manhattan with Anna, Lily, and Daniel.
The Moretti mansion was quiet.
The gates had been repaired.
The guards were different.
And for the first time, the house did not feel like a fortress.
It felt like a home.
Lucas stood in the doorway as Lily led Daniel toward the living room.
“Come on! I'll show you my drawings!””
Daniel followed her.
Anna watched them go.
Then she turned toward Lucas.
“You know what we need?””
Lucas raised an eyebrow.
“What?””
“A smaller house.””
He laughed softly.
“A smaller house?””
“Somewhere without armed guards at every door. Somewhere Lily can run in the garden. Somewhere Daniel can have his own room.””
Lucas looked around the enormous mansion.
For years, he had believed this house represented everything he had achieved.
Now it only reminded him of everything he had lost.
“We'll find one.””
Anna reached for his hand.
“And the company?””
Lucas looked toward the office.
“Marco is arranging the sale of the legitimate businesses. The rest will be shut down or handed over to the authorities.””
“You're giving it all up?””
“I'm giving up the part of my life that nearly cost me my children.””
Anna rested her head against his shoulder.
“What will you do?””
Lucas looked toward the living room.
Lily was showing Daniel a picture of a yellow house.
Daniel was listening carefully.
“Whatever they need.””
Three months later, the family moved into a house overlooking a quiet garden.
There were no marble floors.
No secret corridors.
No armed men standing outside the bedrooms.
Just sunlight, flowers, and the sound of children laughing.
Lily had become Daniel's favorite person.
She taught him how to draw stars.
He taught her how to build paper airplanes.
They still had medical appointments, and both children had their own routines and care plans.
But they were together.
One afternoon, Lucas sat on the porch while Anna brought out two cups of tea.
She handed him one.
“Thinking about the past?””
“A little.””
“About your father?””
Lucas shook his head.
“About the day Lily found me on that floor.””
Anna smiled.
“She saved your life.””
Lucas looked toward the garden.
“She gave me one.””
Anna sat beside him.
After a moment, Lucas said, “I used to think being a Moretti meant never showing weakness.””
“And now?””
He watched Lily and Daniel running through the grass.
“Now I think it means making sure the people you love never have to be afraid of you.””
Anna leaned against him.
Inside the house, the telephone rang.
Lucas glanced toward it.
Then he looked back at his family.
He didn't move.
The call rang again.
And again.
Finally, Anna smiled.
“Aren't you going to answer?””
Lucas shook his head.
“Whatever it is can wait.””
He reached for her hand.
In the garden, Lily laughed.
Daniel laughed with her.
And Lucas Moretti finally understood that the greatest thing he could leave his children was not an empire, a fortune, or a name.
It was a childhood without fear.
A home without secrets.
And a father who would never disappear.
