Chapter 5: The Woman Who Never Stopped Waiting

David turned toward the farmhouse.

A young woman stood in the doorway.

She was wearing a dark green cardigan, black trousers, and a pair of reading glasses pushed onto her head. Her hair was tied into a loose ponytail.

She looked familiar.

Very familiar.

But David couldn't immediately place her.

Rachel stood up, still holding Harper and Maya.

“David, this is Sophie.””

The young woman stepped onto the porch.

“Hello, David.””

He stared.

“Sophie Bennett?””

She nodded.

David remembered her.

Sophie had been Rachel's younger sister.

Six years earlier, she had been a university student living in Boston. She had attended the funeral wearing a black dress and carrying a bouquet of white roses.

David remembered her crying beside Rachel's coffin.

He remembered comforting her.

Now she was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Healthy.

And apparently involved in the secret that had destroyed his family.

“What are you doing here?””

Sophie glanced at Rachel.

“Keeping her alive.””

David looked at his wife.

“You brought your sister into this?””

Rachel nodded.

“She was the only person I could trust.””

Sophie folded her arms.

“That's not entirely true.””

Rachel's expression changed.

“Sophie…”

“You trusted Marcus, too. And look how that turned out.””

Marcus stepped out of the SUV.

“I'm standing right here.””

“Then you can hear me.””

David raised a hand.

“Enough. I want everyone inside.””

Rachel kissed Harper's forehead.

“Come on, sweetheart. Let's get you two something to eat.””

Harper held her mother's hand.

“Mommy, is Maya staying with us?””

Rachel smiled through her tears.

“If that's what she wants.””

Maya looked at David.

“Can I stay with my daddy, too?””

David knelt.

“You don't ever have to ask permission to stay with me.””

Maya threw her arms around his neck.

For the first time since seeing her on that downtown bench, David felt the terrifying confusion inside him give way to something else.

Love.

A strange, overwhelming love for a little girl he had never been allowed to know.

He kissed her hair.

Then he followed Rachel into the farmhouse.

The kitchen smelled of cinnamon and fresh coffee.

Two plates of pancakes sat on the table. A bowl of strawberries rested between them. There were children's drawings attached to the refrigerator with colorful magnets.

David noticed one immediately.

It showed a woman standing between two little girls.

Above them, in uneven handwriting, were the words:

My family.

Rachel caught him looking.

“I made that drawing with Maya last year.””

David stared.

“Last year?””

“She asked me what a family looked like.””

Rachel sat down.

“I didn't know what to tell her.””

David pulled out a chair.

“Tell me everything.””

Rachel looked at the girls.

“Can they play outside for a little while?””

David hesitated.

Sophie nodded.

“I'll stay with them.””

Harper looked uncertain.

“Daddy?””

David took her hand.

“It's okay, sweetheart. Mommy and I need to talk.””

Maya leaned toward Harper.

“Let's look at the garden.””

The two girls ran toward the back door.

Sophie followed.

Rachel waited until the door closed.

Then she sat opposite David.

For a moment, neither spoke.

David looked at her hands.

Her wedding ring was gone.

He looked at her face.

There were faint lines near her eyes that hadn't been there six years earlier.

She looked older.

Not simply older from time passing.

Older from fear.

“You let me bury you,” he said.

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You let me stand beside a closed coffin.””

“I know.””

“You let Harper grow up without her mother.””

Rachel's lips trembled.

“I thought she would be safer with you.””

David leaned forward.

“Safer than what? A father who loved her? A home where she was wanted?””

“Richard was watching you.””

“So you disappeared?””

“I didn't have a choice.””

“You always had a choice, Rachel.””

She looked at him.

“You think I don't know that?””

Her voice broke.

“You think I didn't spend every night wondering whether Harper was sleeping? Whether she was sick? Whether she was asking for me?

I watched birthday videos through a computer screen, David. I watched our daughter blow out candles while I sat in a room hundreds of miles away.””

David's anger faltered.

Rachel wiped her cheeks.

“I used to replay the sound of your voice just to remember what it felt like to be home.””

He looked down.

“Why didn't you contact me?””

“Because Richard threatened to expose a secret about your company.””

David frowned.

“What secret?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Your company wasn't built entirely on legitimate investments.””

David stiffened.

“What are you talking about?””

“Six years ago, Mitchell Financial was used to process several payments connected to Richard's medical foundation.””

“I never authorized anything like that.””

“I know.””

“But someone did?””

Rachel nodded.

“Richard had access to one of your subsidiary accounts through a business partnership. He used it to move money without your knowledge.””

David leaned back.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because he had documents showing transactions under your name. If you went to the police, he planned to make you look like the person financing the illegal medical program.””

David stared at her.

“That would have destroyed everything.””

“And put you in prison.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“So you disappeared to protect me?””

“To protect all of us.””

Rachel opened a drawer and removed a small metal box.

Inside were several photographs, medical records, and a USB drive.

“I kept copies of everything I could find.””

David picked up one photograph.

It showed Richard Ashford standing outside a modern medical facility.

Beside him stood Dr. Adrian Vale.

Behind them was a sign:

ASHFORD PEDIATRIC GENETICS CENTER.

David examined the date.

It was from seven months after Rachel's supposed death.

“Why were you there?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Because Richard wasn't just hiding Maya. He was using her medical identity to conceal the identities of other children.””

David's stomach tightened.

“What?””

“He was arranging illegal transfers through a private adoption network. Some families were told their children had died. Others were told their babies needed specialized treatment and would be transferred overseas.””

David stared at the photographs.

“How many children?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you see them?””

Rachel nodded.

“I saw their files.””

Her voice dropped.

“Some of those children were never reunited with their parents.””

David looked at the metal box.

“And Maya?””

“Richard wanted her because she was the first of his grandchildren born into the family after he lost control of his foundation. He believed he could use her identity to establish a medical inheritance trust.””

“That's why he wanted her.””

Rachel nodded.

“He didn't care about raising her. He cared about owning her future.””

David's hands curled into fists.

“And you let her stay with people connected to him?””

“I had no way to reach her without exposing her location.””

“Rachel, she's our daughter.””

“I know!””

Her voice echoed through the kitchen.

She covered her mouth.

Then she whispered:

“I know, David.””

Silence settled between them.

Outside, the girls laughed.

Their voices drifted through the open kitchen window.

David looked toward the garden.

He saw Harper holding Maya's hand as they chased a butterfly.

For six years, Harper had been alone.

Now she had a sister.

He looked back at Rachel.

“Why today?””

Rachel glanced at the metal box.

“Because Richard found out I had the original medical records.””

“Where did you get them?””

“From Dr. Vale.””

David frowned.

“You said he was involved.””

“He was. But he became afraid of Richard after he realized the foundation's money trail was about to be exposed.””

“So he gave you the records?””

“He gave me some of them.””

David picked up the USB drive.

“And the rest?””

Rachel looked at the kitchen door.

“Sophie has them.””

David studied her.

“Why did Sophie say someone was sending information to Richard?””

Rachel's face tightened.

“Because we've been receiving messages for weeks. Someone knows where we are, when we move, and who visits.””

“Do you know who?””

“No.””

David stood.

“Then we're leaving. I'll get us somewhere secure.””

Rachel shook her head.

“It's not that simple.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard has already frozen several accounts connected to the children's trust. He can make it look as if you've stolen money from your own company. He can have you arrested before sunset.””

David laughed bitterly.

“Let him try.””

Rachel grabbed his hand.

“David, listen to me. This isn't a man you can defeat by threatening to sue him.””

He looked at her.

“Then how do we defeat him?””

Rachel opened the metal box again.

She removed a small black notebook.

“Richard has been keeping records for years. Payments, names, medical transfers, private security arrangements. If we find the original ledger, we can expose everything.””

“Where is it?””

“Inside his estate.””

David stared at her.

“You want me to break into Richard Ashford's house?””

Rachel shook her head.

“No. I want you to understand why he hasn't already destroyed us.””

She turned the notebook toward him.

On the first page was a handwritten list of names.

David recognized Adrian Vale.

Marcus Reed.

Elena Cross.

Then he saw his own name.

David Mitchell.

Beside it was a date.

Six years earlier.

And beneath the date was a handwritten note:

Primary transfer authorization. Subject unaware.

David felt the blood drain from his face.

“What does this mean?””

Rachel looked away.

“I don't know.””

“You said you had the records.””

“I never saw that page before.””

He turned it over.

On the back was a photograph of a hospital corridor.

The date was the night Rachel disappeared.

There were three people in the photograph.

Richard.

Adrian.

And David.

David stared at the image.

He was wearing the same suit he had worn on the night Harper was born.

He remembered that corridor.

But he didn't remember being photographed.

He leaned closer.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked at the picture.

Then her face changed.

“David…”

“What?””

She pointed to the corner.

A fourth person stood partially hidden behind the door.

A woman.

The face was blurred.

But the woman wore a silver bird necklace.

David looked at Rachel.

“Who is that?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I don't know.””

The back door suddenly opened.

Sophie rushed into the kitchen.

“Rachel, we have a problem.””

David stood.

“What happened?””

Sophie looked toward the garden.

“Marcus is gone.””

Rachel frowned.

“What do you mean, gone?””

“He took his car.””

“Where did he go?””

Sophie swallowed.

“He left something on the porch.””

She placed a small white envelope on the table.

David opened it.

Inside was a single photograph of the farmhouse.

Taken that morning.

On the back were six words:

You have until midnight to return Maya.

David crushed the photograph in his hand.

Then his phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

“Mr. Mitchell, I believe you've met my daughter.””

David froze.

The voice continued.

“Now I'd like to meet my granddaughter.””

David looked at Rachel.

She had gone completely still.

Because she recognized the voice.

It belonged to Richard Ashford.

And before David could hang up, Richard added:

“By the way, David, ask your wife what happened to the other baby.””
