Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Two Identical Faces
David didn't wait to see who stepped out.
He grabbed Harper's backpack with one hand and guided both girls toward the glass entrance of his office building.
“Inside. Now.””
Harper stumbled as she tried to keep up.
“Daddy, I'm scared.””
“I know, sweetheart. Keep holding my hand.””
Maya looked over her shoulder.
“Mommy!””
Elena hurried after them, her heels clicking against the pavement.
“David, don't go through the lobby!””
He spun around.
“Why not?””
“Because he has people inside.””
David stared at her.
For six years, Elena Cross had been his executive assistant, then his chief operating officer. She had managed his calendar, negotiated contracts, attended board meetings, and sat beside him during some of the most important moments of his career.
He had trusted her with company secrets worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Now she was telling him that a stranger had people inside his own building.
“What have you done?”” he asked.
Elena shook her head.
“Not what you think.””
“Then start talking.””
The SUV door opened behind them.
A tall man stepped onto the sidewalk.
He wore a charcoal suit and carried no visible weapon. He looked like the kind of businessman who belonged in a private club, not someone who would chase children through a city street.
But his eyes never left the girls.
“Mr. Mitchell,” he called calmly.
David turned.
“Stay away from my family.””
The stranger gave a faint smile.
“Your family? That's an interesting choice of words.””
Harper pressed her face against David's coat.
Maya stood beside her, trembling.
The man glanced at them.
“Girls, come here. Your mother is waiting.””
Maya shook her head.
“My mommy is right there.””
The stranger's expression barely changed.
“Your mother has made some unfortunate decisions.””
Elena stepped forward.
“Don't you dare talk to her.””
The man looked at Elena.
“You've already made this difficult enough.””
David took out his phone.
“I'm calling the police.””
“Of course,” the stranger replied.
“But perhaps you should consider what they'll find when they arrive.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a photograph.
He held it up.
It showed David standing outside a hospital six years earlier, holding a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
Rachel was beside him.
Her face was pale, but she was smiling.
David recognized the photograph immediately.
It had been taken on the day Harper was born.
“What is that?”” he asked.
“An old photograph.””
“Why do you have it?””
“Because some stories are worth preserving.””
The stranger lowered the photograph.
“Ask Elena what happened after Rachel died.””
David turned toward her.
Elena's lips parted.
“David…”
“What happened after Rachel died?””
She looked at the children.
“Not here.””
The stranger checked his watch.
“You have five minutes. Then I'm taking the girl.””
Maya began crying.
“I don't want to go with you!””
David's jaw tightened.
“You're not taking anyone.””
The stranger shrugged.
“We'll see.””
He turned and walked back toward the SUV.
David watched him get inside.
The vehicle didn't leave.
It simply remained at the curb, waiting.
Elena led David and the girls through a service entrance two blocks away.
They entered a small underground parking garage connected to an older office annex. David had purchased the property years earlier and rarely used it.
There were no receptionists.
No security guards.
No glass walls overlooking the street.
Only concrete pillars, fluorescent lights, and the distant hum of ventilation fans.
David locked the door behind them.
“Now talk.””
Elena looked at Harper and Maya.
“Can we find somewhere they won't hear?””
“No.””
“David, this isn't something children should—”
“Those are two six-year-old girls who look exactly alike. One is wearing a necklace I bought for my dead wife. A man just threatened to take them. You have about thirty seconds before I stop asking nicely.””
Elena closed her eyes.
Then she sat on a concrete parking barrier.
“Rachel didn't have one baby.””
David stared at her.
“What?””
“She had twins.””
The words seemed to echo through the garage.
David shook his head.
“No.””
“David…”
“No. Rachel gave birth to Harper. I was there.
I held my daughter. I saw the birth certificate.””
“You saw one birth certificate.””
David stepped closer.
“Where is the other child?””
Elena looked toward Maya.
“Right there.””
David felt the floor shift beneath him.
He looked at Maya.
The little girl had stopped crying. She was staring at him with huge brown eyes.
“Am I Harper's sister?”” she asked.
David couldn't breathe.
Harper looked between them.
“Does that mean she's my twin?””
Elena nodded slowly.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Harper considered this.
Then she moved toward Maya and took her hand.
“That's okay,” she whispered.
“You can be my twin.””
Maya smiled through her tears.
David looked away.
Six years.
Six years of birthday parties, bedtime stories, school photographs, and Christmas mornings.
And somewhere in the world, another little girl had been celebrating those same birthdays without him.
He turned back to Elena.
“Why didn't I know?””
Elena wiped her cheek.
“Because Rachel was terrified.””
“Of what?””
“Of her father.””
David frowned.
“Rachel's father?””
“Richard Ashford.””
The name landed like a stone.
Richard Ashford was one of the wealthiest men in the country. He owned hotels, shipping companies, medical research facilities, and a private investment empire that seemed to expand every year.
He was also the chairman of the Ashford Foundation.
And, until six years earlier, he had been David's father-in-law.
David hadn't seen him since Rachel's funeral.
Richard had refused to attend.
He had sent flowers instead.
“What does Richard have to do with my daughters?””
Elena took a shaky breath.
“Everything.””
She opened her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was a hospital photograph.
Two newborn girls lay side by side in identical white blankets.
Their tiny hands were touching.
On the back, Rachel had written:
My beautiful girls. Harper and Maya. Together, no matter what.
David stared at the photograph.
His knees weakened.
“Where did you get this?””
“Rachel gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Three weeks before she died.””
David looked up sharply.
“Rachel was already dead when you started working for me.””
Elena nodded.
“I know.””
“Then how did she give you this?””
Elena's eyes filled.
“Because I knew Rachel long before I worked for you.””
She looked at the children.
“I was her closest friend at college.””
David remembered Elena mentioning a friend who had died in a car accident. He had never asked for details.
Now he understood why she had always seemed uncomfortable whenever Rachel's name came up.
“Why did you come to work for me?””
Elena hesitated.
“To keep an eye on things.””
“What things?””
“Richard.””
David looked at the photograph again.
The two babies were so small.
So innocent.
And someone had decided that they should grow up separately.
“Tell me everything.””
Elena pressed her palms together.
“Rachel discovered that her father had been using the Ashford Foundation's children's medical program to move money through private research accounts. She found evidence that some of the children's identities were being altered to conceal illegal adoptions and unauthorized medical trials.””
David's expression darkened.
“Children?””
Elena nodded.
“Rachel wanted to expose him. But when she discovered she was pregnant with twins, he began threatening her.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“She wanted to. But Richard had people watching you. He told her that if she involved you, he would make sure neither of you ever saw the children again.””
David stared at her.
“That doesn't explain why one of my daughters was taken.””
Elena looked down.
“Richard wanted control over the Ashford bloodline. Rachel's inheritance was enormous. He believed the twins could be used to secure his family's future.””
“That's insane.””
“He doesn't think like ordinary people, David.””
Elena took a folded document from the envelope.
“After Rachel's death, he arranged for Maya to be placed with a family connected to his private foundation. He made sure you were told that only one baby had survived.””
David's hands began to shake.
“Who signed the paperwork?””
Elena didn't answer.
“Who?””
She slowly turned the document toward him.
There was a signature at the bottom.
David recognized it.
It belonged to the doctor who had delivered his daughters.
But beneath it was another signature.
One that made David's stomach twist.
Elena Cross.
David stared at her.
“You signed this?””
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to save her.””
“You signed away my daughter?””
“I was twenty-six. Richard threatened to have Rachel declared mentally unstable and take both babies. He told me he would destroy you if I refused.””
David stepped back.
“You let me bury my wife believing she had only one child.””
“I know.””
“You let me raise Harper without knowing she had a sister.””
“I know.””
“Every birthday. Every Christmas. Every time Harper asked me where her mother was…”
Elena began crying.
“I know, David.””
He looked at Maya.
She had moved close to Harper and was examining the tiny silver bird around her neck.
“Did you know where she was all these years?”” he asked.
Elena nodded.
“Not exactly. Richard moved her between properties. I tried to get information, but his security team monitored everyone around her.””
David looked at the document again.
“Why bring her here today?””
Elena swallowed.
“Because Richard is planning to move Maya overseas.””
“When?””
“Tonight.””
David felt a wave of anger so intense that he had to grip the concrete pillar beside him.
“Why today?””
Elena reached into her handbag again.
This time she pulled out a small black flash drive.
“Because I found something in Richard's private records. Something that proves Maya was never legally adopted. It also proves that the medical foundation has been using her identity for years.””
David stared at the drive.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Richard isn't just hiding a child.””
Elena looked toward the parking garage entrance.
“He's hiding a crime.””
A sudden metallic bang echoed through the garage.
Everyone froze.
Then came another sound.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Approaching the locked service door.
Elena went pale.
David moved both girls behind him.
A voice came through the other side.
“David Mitchell.””
It was the same man from the SUV.
“Open the door. We need to discuss your daughters.””
David looked at Elena.
She shook her head violently.
Then she whispered something that made him understand the danger was much worse than he had imagined.
“David, that's not Richard's driver.””
“Who is he?””
May you like
Elena looked directly into his eyes.
“That's the man who signed Rachel's death certificate.””
