Chapter 7: The Lake House Truth
The next morning, we returned to the lake house.
I didn’t want to go.
Every part of me resisted.
That place had taken my son from me.
But Elijah insisted.
“I need to remember.””
Those words were enough.
We drove in silence.
The lake looked exactly the same.
That was the cruelest part.
The water still moved.
The trees still stood.
The world had continued while ours stopped.
Elijah stood near the shore.
“This is where Grandma found me.””
Marcus looked around.
“Where was I?””
Elijah pointed.
“Over there.””
My husband walked toward the old dock.
His face was pale.
“I remember fixing the boat.””
Elijah nodded.
“You left because Grandma called you.””
Marcus turned.
“She called me?””
Elijah nodded.
“She said there was an emergency.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Did she?””
He shook his head slowly.
“No.””
A terrible silence followed.
Someone had created a reason to separate our family.
Someone had planned it.
Elijah walked toward the dock.
“I heard Grandma talking.””
“To who?””
He looked at the water.
“Richard.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“What did they say?””
“I don’t remember everything.””
Elijah looked frustrated.
“I was scared.””
I moved closer.
“Tell us what you remember.””
He took a deep breath.
“Richard said, ‘The boy knows too much.’”
My blood froze.
“What boy?””
Elijah looked at Marcus.
“You.””
Marcus stared.
“Me?””
Elijah nodded.
“He said you were going to find out.””
The wind moved through the trees.
For a moment, none of us spoke.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
“I remember something too.””
Everyone looked at him.
He held a small envelope.
“I found this in Grandma’s things.””
Marcus took it.
Inside was a photograph.
Not old.
Recent.
A picture of Richard Vale meeting someone.
Someone we recognized.
My breath stopped.
Because standing beside Richard was Marcus’s father.
A man who had supposedly died ten years earlier.
Marcus stared.
“That’s impossible.””
But it wasn’t.
Because the back of the photo had a date.
Three months ago.
My mother was dead.
Richard was missing.
And Marcus’s father was alive.
That night, we learned the truth.
Marcus’s father had never died.
The death certificate was fake.
The funeral had been a lie.
Everything connected back to one person.
Richard Vale.
The man who had helped steal my son.
The man who had helped erase Daniel’s identity.
The man who had spent years controlling our family from the shadows.
Susan found one final document.
A contract.
Signed by Richard.
The purpose was written clearly.
“Transfer custody of minors away from Claire Bennett and Marcus Reed.””
My hands shook.
“They planned this.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
“But why?””
No one answered.
Until Daniel pointed at the signature.
“I know why.””
We looked at him.
He swallowed.
“Because Richard told Grandma something.””
“What?””
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“He said you weren’t my father.””
The words hit the room like an explosion.
Marcus went completely still.
Daniel continued.
“He said my real father was someone else.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at the document.
Then at Marcus.
“The man who paid Richard to take us.””
A car door slammed outside.
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked toward the window.
Someone was standing near the house.
Watching us.
Then the person stepped into the light.
May you like
And Marcus whispered the name.
“My father.””
