Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Everything

We spent the next hour sitting in Richard Vale’s empty house.

Not because we wanted to.

Because we didn’t know where else to go.

Every room held another piece of a puzzle that made less sense the more we uncovered.

There were files stacked in the office.

Old legal documents.

Newspaper clippings.

Photographs.

My mother’s name appeared again and again.

Marcus opened one folder.

Then another.

His face became harder with every page.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

He handed me the papers.

I read the first page.

Adoption records.

My hands went cold.

Daniel’s name was listed.

But the birth mother’s name was missing.

Only one note appeared.

“Private arrangement.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What does that mean?””

He looked broken.

“I don’t know.””

Susan picked up another file.

Then she froze.

“Claire.””

I turned.

She was staring at a newspaper article.

The headline was from fifteen years ago.

LOCAL WOMAN SEARCHES FOR MISSING CHILD AFTER FAMILY TRAGEDY.

Underneath was a picture of my mother.

But the article wasn’t about Elijah.

It was about Daniel.

The date was impossible.

Daniel wasn’t supposed to exist in our lives fifteen years ago.

I read the article carefully.

A newborn baby had been found abandoned near a hospital.

A woman had taken temporary custody.

That woman was my mother.

My hands started shaking.

“She knew him before.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“She knew Daniel before Elijah disappeared.””

The truth hit harder than anything before.

My mother didn’t take one child.

She had built her entire life around secrets.

But why?

Why would she hide two boys?

Why would she destroy her own daughter?

We searched until evening.

Then we found a small locked drawer in Richard’s desk.

Inside was a flash drive.

Nothing else.

Marcus looked at me.

“Should we?””

I knew what he meant.

Opening it meant crossing a line.

But that line had already been crossed seven years ago.

I plugged it into my laptop.

A folder appeared.

The name made my blood run cold.

CLAIRE.

Inside were videos.

Hundreds of them.

My hands covered my mouth.

“What is this?””

The first video opened automatically.

My mother appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

Sitting in a chair.

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, then I failed.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Her voice filled the room.

“I told myself I was protecting Claire. I told myself I was protecting the boys.””

She paused.

“But I was protecting a lie.””

Marcus moved closer.

The video continued.

“Richard warned me that if Claire found out the truth, everything would fall apart.””

My heart raced.

“What truth?””

My mother answered the question herself.

“The truth about the lake.””

The screen flickered.

Then my mother said something that changed everything.

“Elijah did not disappear because of an accident.””

I grabbed Marcus’s hand.

My mother looked down.

“He saw something he was never supposed to see.””

The video ended.

No explanation.

No answers.

Just that sentence.

Elijah had not disappeared because of an accident.

He had disappeared because he saw something.

I ran upstairs.

“Elijah!””

He was sitting in Noah’s room, looking at the toys.

When he saw my face, he stood immediately.

“What happened?””

I knelt in front of him.

“Your grandmother said you saw something at the lake.””

His face changed.

Fear returned.

“No.””

“Elijah.””

He backed away.

“I’m not supposed to talk about that.””

My heart broke.

“Who told you?””

He whispered:

“Grandma.””

I held his shoulders gently.

“You’re safe now.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I saw Dad.””

Marcus stepped into the doorway.

“I was there.””

Elijah shook his head.

“Not you.””

The room froze.

“I saw Dad with someone.””

Marcus stared.

“What?””

Elijah looked terrified.

“Grandma said I was confused.””

“Who was with me?”” Marcus asked.

May you like

Elijah’s voice dropped.

“Richard Vale.””
