Chapter 9: The Room That Shouldn't Exist
The Carter Foundation's headquarters occupied an entire block in Manhattan.
Its glass tower stood between two luxury hotels and a private investment bank. The company logo was displayed above the revolving entrance doors.
For decades, it had been considered one of the most respected charitable organizations in America.
Millions had been donated to hospitals, children's homes, and educational programs.
But beneath the building was an archive that had never appeared on any official floor plan.
Room 17.
Thomas arrived with Detective Morgan, Henry, Ava, and Lily.
Two uniformed officers followed them.
Mrs. Bennett had remained at the mansion to assist investigators.
Victoria was nowhere to be found.
“Where is the entrance?”” Detective Morgan asked.
Henry pointed toward a service elevator.
“Below the basement.””
Thomas looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I helped Daniel locate it.””
Thomas stopped.
“You knew about this room?””
Henry nodded.
“I helped your brother prepare the original evidence. But I never entered the archive.””
“Why?””
“Daniel insisted that only someone with the brass key should open it.””
Ava looked at Lily.
“That's you, sweetheart.””
Lily stared at the elevator.
“Can I do it?””
Thomas knelt.
“Only if you're comfortable.””
She nodded.
“I want to find out what Daddy left.””
The elevator descended.
When the doors opened, they found themselves in a narrow concrete corridor.
A security camera blinked above the ceiling.
Detective Morgan immediately motioned to the officers.
“Check the area.””
One officer approached the camera.
“It's been disabled.””
Henry looked toward the end of the corridor.
“Someone's already been here.””
Thomas felt his stomach tighten.
They moved forward.
At the far end was a steel door with a brass plate.
*ARCHIVE 17.*
Beneath the number was a flower-shaped keyhole.
Lily stepped forward.
She inserted the key.
It turned smoothly.
A heavy locking mechanism released.
The door opened.
Inside was a small room lined with metal cabinets.
There were no windows.
A single desk stood in the center.
And on that desk sat a photograph of Daniel.
Beside it was a handwritten message.
If Lily has reached this room, then the truth has survived.
Thomas picked up the note.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Daniel's.
Ava approached the cabinets.
“There's something here.””
She pulled open the first drawer.
Inside were dozens of folders.
Every folder contained financial records, hospital documents, and correspondence dating back more than a decade.
Detective Morgan began photographing everything.
Henry opened a thick black binder.
“Good Lord.””
Thomas looked over.
“What?””
Henry turned the binder around.
It contained copies of bank transfers from the Carter Foundation.
But the signatures weren't Richard's.
They belonged to Thomas.
And Daniel.
Thomas stared.
“These are forged.””
Henry nodded.
“Someone used your names to authorize illegal transfers.””
Ava opened another folder.
Inside was a list of payments made to private security companies.
One name appeared repeatedly.
*BLACKRIDGE PROTECTION SERVICES.*
Thomas recognized it.
“That's Frank's old company.””
Detective Morgan photographed the page.
“Do you have evidence connecting Frank to the foundation?””
Henry removed another document.
“This is his original employment contract.””
Thomas looked at the signature.
Richard Carter.
His father had personally hired Frank.
The dates went back eleven years.
To the night Sarah died.
Ava found a sealed envelope in the bottom drawer.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was a letter addressed to her.
My dearest Ava,
If you are reading this, then I wasn't able to bring you and your sister together myself.
I am sorry.
For eleven years, I have carried the knowledge that I helped separate you from Lily. I told myself it was the only way to keep you safe.
But I should have fought harder.
Your mother discovered that Richard Carter had been using the foundation to conceal illegal payments. She found proof that Frank had been paid to intimidate employees and destroy records.
When she threatened to report him, Richard arranged for her medical treatment to be altered.
I discovered the truth too late.
Your mother was murdered.
Ava stopped reading.
Her knees weakened.
Thomas caught her arm.
“Are you okay?””
She shook her head.
Henry stepped beside her.
The letter continued.
Richard knew that Sarah had given birth to twins. He believed that separating the girls would make it easier to control the evidence and silence anyone who knew what happened.
He was wrong.
One child was raised by Victoria and me. The other was placed with a family who knew nothing about the investigation.
But Richard never stopped looking for you.
Ava covered her mouth.
Thomas stared at the page.
His father had used two newborn babies as pieces in a financial scheme.
He had destroyed Sarah's life.
And Daniel had spent eleven years trying to undo it.
Ava continued reading.
There is one final thing you must understand.
Victoria did not begin this conspiracy. She became involved after Richard threatened to expose the truth about her own family.
Thomas frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ava turned the page.
There was a second paragraph.
The man who arranged Sarah's death was not working alone. Someone inside our family provided the medical authorization.
I have the original signature.
Beneath the letter was a folded medical document.
Thomas opened it.
The hospital authorization bore a signature.
Victoria Carter.
Thomas stared.
“She signed the order?””
Henry leaned closer.
“Read the date.””
Thomas looked.
The document had been signed eleven years earlier.
The same night Sarah died.
Ava shook her head.
“No. Victoria told us she didn't know what happened.””
Thomas couldn't speak.
Then Detective Morgan found something inside the cabinet.
“Mr. Carter?””
She held up a small envelope.
“There's another recording.””
Henry connected it to the portable player.
A man's voice emerged.
Richard Carter.
Even after twelve years, Thomas recognized the deep, commanding tone.
“Sarah is becoming a problem. She has copies of the accounts, and Daniel is getting too close.””
Another voice answered.
Victoria.
“What do you want me to do?””
Richard replied.
“Make sure she doesn't leave the hospital.””
Victoria's voice trembled.
“You said she would only be transferred.””
“She will be.””
“What about the baby?””
“Which one?””
“The second girl.””
Richard laughed.
“Keep her away from Daniel. He'll do whatever you tell him if he believes he's protecting his daughter.””
Thomas felt sick.
The recording continued.
Victoria spoke again.
“And if Sarah survives?””
Richard's answer was chilling.
“She won't.””
Ava began crying.
Thomas closed his eyes.
Detective Morgan stopped the recording.
“That's enough.””
But Thomas shook his head.
“Keep playing it.””
The next voice was Frank's.
“Mr. Carter, the nurse has administered the medication.””
Richard replied.
“Good.””
Then Victoria whispered something.
Something that made Thomas's entire body go cold.
“Please don't hurt the babies.””
Richard answered:
“Then stop asking questions.””
The recording ended.
Ava collapsed into the chair.
Lily moved toward her.
“Are you sad?””
Ava nodded.
Lily took her hand.
“Daddy said crying is okay.””
Ava pulled her close.
For a moment, they sat together in the middle of the room, two sisters who had lost the same mother and spent eleven years growing up in separate worlds.
Thomas looked at the medical document.
“Victoria signed this.””
Henry nodded.
“There's no denying it.””
Detective Morgan photographed the original.
“We'll need to verify its authenticity.””
Thomas turned.
“Why would Victoria help Richard?””
Henry opened another folder.
“Look at this.””
Inside was a birth record.
Not Lily's.
Not Ava's.
It belonged to Victoria's biological son.
The infant who had supposedly died twenty-three minutes after birth.
Thomas stared.
“What is this?””
Henry read the document.
“According to this record, the child was transferred to a private neonatal facility.””
Thomas frowned.
“But Victoria said he died.””
Henry turned another page.
There was a second medical report.
The child had survived.
He had been transferred under a different identity.
And someone had continued paying for his care for eleven years.
Ava approached.
“Who was he?””
Thomas looked at the name.
The document listed the boy as:
*JAMES CARTER.*
Mother: Victoria Carter.
Father: Richard Carter.
Thomas slowly lowered the paper.
His father had been listed as the boy's father.
Not Daniel.
Not anyone else.
Richard.
But Richard had been dead for twelve years.
“How is that possible?”” Thomas whispered.
Henry stared at the report.
“Because Richard Carter wasn't your biological father.””
Thomas turned.
“What?””
Henry placed another document on the desk.
It was an old DNA report.
The results were unmistakable.
Thomas Carter was biologically related to Richard Carter.
Daniel Carter was not.
Thomas felt the room tilt.
“My brother…”
Henry nodded slowly.
“Daniel was adopted.””
Thomas stared at him.
“No.””
“Your father hid it.””
Thomas looked at the two birth records.
The Carter family had been built on a lie.
But before he could ask another question, a sound came from the corridor.
Footsteps.
Then a familiar voice.
“Thomas.””
Victoria.
She stood in the doorway.
Her coat was soaked, her hair disheveled, and her face streaked with tears.
Detective Morgan immediately reached for her weapon.
“Mrs. Carter, step away from the door.””
Victoria ignored her.
She looked directly at Thomas.
“You shouldn't have opened that room.””
Thomas held up the medical authorization.
“You signed the order that killed Sarah.””
Victoria's eyes filled.
“I didn't know they would kill her.””
“You signed it!””
“I thought they were moving her to another hospital!””
Ava stood.
“Why did you let them take my mother?””
Victoria looked at her.
For a moment, something like genuine regret crossed her face.
Then she whispered:
“Because Richard told me he would kill Daniel if I refused.””
Thomas shook his head.
“You could have gone to the police.””
“He controlled the police.””
“You could have told Daniel.””
“He would have confronted him. Richard would have killed him too.””
Ava stepped forward.
“And you separated us.””
Victoria began crying.
“I thought I was saving Lily.””
“By lying to her for eleven years?””
“I loved her!””
Ava pointed at the DNA report.
“Then why did you let Richard take the other baby?””
Victoria looked toward the document.
Her expression changed.
“Because Richard didn't take the other baby.””
Thomas frowned.
“What?””
Victoria looked at him.
“The child named James wasn't mine.””
Silence.
Henry slowly lowered the report.
Victoria continued.
“Richard had another son. A child nobody knew about. He used my medical records to conceal the birth.””
Thomas stared.
“Who was the mother?””
Victoria looked toward the entrance.
Then she said:
“Sarah Hayes.””
Ava froze.
“What?””
Victoria's voice broke.
“James was Sarah's first child. The twins weren't her only children.””
Thomas looked at the report.
If Sarah had another child, and Richard was the father, then the entire story had just become even more complicated.
But Victoria wasn't finished.
She reached into her coat and removed a photograph.
It showed a young man standing beside Richard Carter.
He looked about twenty years old.
On the back was a handwritten name.
*FRANK CARTER.*
Thomas stared.
“The security guard?””
Victoria nodded.
“Frank wasn't just Richard's employee.””
She looked at Thomas.
“He was your father's biological son.””
Thomas felt his knees weaken.
“And he knows.””
Victoria nodded.
“That's why he's trying to get the key.””
Detective Morgan stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, you're coming with us.””
Victoria looked toward Lily.
Then at Ava.
“I know where Frank is going.””
Thomas grabbed her arm.
“Where?””
Victoria pointed to the final document on the desk.
A private hospital address.
A room number.
*214.*
The same room where Sarah Hayes had died.
Victoria whispered:
“Frank is going there tonight. He's going to destroy the last record of his birth.””
Thomas looked at the clock.
It was 10:43 p.m.
Then the lights in the archive suddenly went out.
A gunshot echoed from the corridor.
Detective Morgan shouted:
“EVERYONE DOWN!””
Ava grabbed Lily.
Thomas threw himself over them.
And through the darkness, a familiar voice called out.
“HELLO, BROTHER.””
Frank had returned.
But this time, he wasn't asking for the key.
He was holding a photograph of Daniel.
May you like
And behind him stood a man Thomas had believed was dead.
Richard Carter.
