Chapter 4: The Woman in the Photograph

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Mrs. Bennett stood at the top of the narrow staircase, one hand gripping the railing and the other holding an old photograph. Her silver hair was slightly disheveled, and her usually gentle face looked almost unrecognizable.

The recording continued to hiss through the black device.

“Daniel, you promised you would never tell her what we did.””

Thomas stared at the housekeeper.

“Margaret?””

She closed her eyes.

“I'm sorry.””

Thomas stepped toward the staircase.

“What exactly did you do?””

Mrs. Bennett looked past him.

Her eyes found Lily.

The little girl was standing beside the desk, her fingers wrapped around the brass key. She had stopped crying, but her lower lip trembled.

“Mrs. Bennett,” Lily whispered.

“Why is your voice on Daddy's machine?””

The old woman began descending.

“One day, sweetheart, I hoped you'd never have to hear that.””

Thomas moved between them.

“Don't come any closer.””

“Thomas, please.””

“You've worked for this family for twenty-three years. You watched Lily grow up. You helped Daniel build this house. And now I find you standing outside a secret room with a photograph of a baby?””

Mrs. Bennett looked at the photograph in her hand.

“I helped your brother save a child.””

Victoria suddenly laughed.

It was a bitter, broken sound.

“You helped him destroy my life.””

Mrs. Bennett turned toward her.

“No, Victoria. Daniel did everything he could to protect you.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“Don't you dare pretend you protected me.””

Lily looked between them.

“Mommy, what's happening?””

Victoria immediately softened her voice.

“Nothing, darling. These people are confusing you.””

But Lily shook her head.

“Daddy said the truth was in here.””

She pointed at the recorder.

“Can we listen?””

Thomas looked at the device.

Then at Victoria.

“Apparently, that's what Daniel wanted.””

He pressed the playback button.

Daniel's voice filled the room again.

“If you're hearing this, then Victoria has found the room. Thomas, I need you to understand that everything you're about to hear happened because I made a terrible mistake eleven years ago.””

A clicking sound followed.

Then the recording continued.

“On the night Lily was born, I received a phone call from a nurse at St. Catherine's Hospital. She told me that my newborn daughter had been taken from the maternity ward.””

Thomas frowned.

“What?””

Victoria stared at the recorder.

Daniel continued.

“The hospital claimed there had been a paperwork error. They said the child had been transferred to another room. But the nurse knew something was wrong. She had seen a woman leaving the hospital with a baby who wasn't hers.””

Thomas slowly looked toward Victoria.

The recording crackled.

“I found out three days later that the woman was connected to someone I trusted. Someone who had access to our medical records and knew exactly when Victoria would give birth.””

Victoria shook her head.

“Turn it off.””

Thomas ignored her.

“Who was it?””

Daniel's voice answered.

“Her name was Eleanor Hayes.””

Mrs. Bennett lowered her head.

Lily looked at the photograph.

“Is that the lady?””

The housekeeper nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“Where is she?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel continued.

“Eleanor worked as a private nurse at the hospital. She had lost her own daughter years earlier, and she had become obsessed with having another child. She was eventually arrested for attempting to take a newborn from the hospital.””

Thomas's face tightened.

“But Lily was never missing.””

“No,” Mrs. Bennett whispered.

“Because Daniel found her.””

Everyone turned toward her.

The old woman held the photograph against her chest.

“Your brother discovered that the hospital had accidentally mixed two newborn identification bracelets during an emergency transfer. Lily had been placed in the wrong recovery room. By the time anyone realized what had happened, Eleanor had already taken advantage of the confusion.””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“That isn't what happened.””

Mrs. Bennett looked at her.

“It's exactly what happened.””

Thomas glanced at the document on the desk.

“Then why does this birth record list another woman as Lily's mother?””

The housekeeper swallowed.

“Because that woman was her mother.””

Silence.

Lily stared at her.

“Then who am I?””

Mrs. Bennett's face crumpled.

“You're Daniel's daughter, sweetheart. That's the one thing that was never in question.””

Lily looked at Victoria.

“But Mommy?””

Victoria covered her mouth.

Thomas took a breath.

“Margaret, start from the beginning. No more half-truths.””

Mrs. Bennett finally stepped into the room.

She placed the photograph on the desk.

The image showed Eleanor holding a newborn baby outside the hospital.

On the back, someone had written:

November 14. The night everything changed.

“Eleanor was not the only woman who gave birth that night,” Mrs. Bennett explained.

“There was another mother. Her name was Sarah Hayes.””

Thomas looked at the photograph again.

“Hayes?””

“Eleanor's younger sister.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No. Sarah was never supposed to be involved.””

Mrs. Bennett turned sharply.

“Then you should explain why you signed the original hospital transfer form.””

Thomas looked at Victoria.

“You signed it?””

Victoria backed toward the wall.

“I was protecting my family.””

“From what?””

She didn't answer.

Mrs. Bennett continued.

“Sarah died shortly after giving birth. She had no husband, no relatives willing to care for the baby, and no money. Eleanor became convinced the child would be taken away by social services.””

Thomas frowned.

“Then what happened?””

“Daniel discovered the mix-up. He found the baby with Eleanor and brought her back to the hospital. But by then, Sarah had died.””

Thomas looked at the document.

“Are you saying Lily is Sarah's daughter?””

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

“And Daniel adopted her.””

Victoria let out a strangled cry.

“No! That's not how it happened!””

Thomas turned.

“Then tell me how it happened.””

Victoria stared at the photograph of the newborn.

For eleven years, she had hidden something.

Something she had believed would never come out.

Finally, she whispered:

“I gave birth to a little boy that night.””

Thomas froze.

Lily looked up.

“A boy?””

Victoria nodded, tears running down her cheeks.

“He was born prematurely. He lived for twenty-three minutes.””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria pressed a trembling hand against her chest.

“I never held him. They told me he was too weak. Then Daniel came into my room and told me the baby had died.””

Thomas looked horrified.

“Victoria…”

“He said there had been complications. He said the hospital had made a mistake. He told me there was another baby who needed a home.””

Mrs. Bennett's eyes filled.

“Daniel believed he was doing the right thing.””

Victoria turned on her.

“You helped him convince me that Lily was my biological daughter!””

“I helped him give you a child to love.””

“You let me believe I had given birth to her!””

Mrs. Bennett's voice broke.

“Because you were grieving, Victoria. You were barely conscious. Daniel thought telling you the truth immediately would destroy you.””

Thomas looked from one woman to the other.

“And nobody thought to tell her later?””

Mrs. Bennett lowered her eyes.

“Daniel tried. Many times.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“He never tried.””

Thomas turned toward her.

“Why did you sign the transfer documents?””

Victoria's expression hardened.

“Because I knew Lily wasn't mine. I knew the truth before we left that hospital.””

The room went silent.

Lily slowly moved away from her.

“Mommy?””

Victoria looked at her.

“I loved you, Lily.””

“Did you know?””

Victoria began crying harder.

“I knew you weren't the baby I had given birth to.””

Lily's little face crumpled.

“Then why did you call me your daughter?””

Victoria reached out.

“Because you were my daughter.””

Lily stepped behind Thomas.

Mrs. Bennett covered her mouth.

The little girl looked at the old photograph.

Then at the woman who had raised her.

“Did Daddy know?””

Thomas knelt beside her.

“Yes, sweetheart. He knew.””

“Did he love me anyway?””

Thomas's eyes filled.

“More than anything.””

Lily looked at the recorder.

“Then why didn't he tell me?””

Before Thomas could answer, the device clicked again.

Daniel's voice returned.

“One more thing. Victoria knows where Sarah's daughter came from. But she doesn't know that I found the second hospital record.””

Thomas leaned closer.

The recording continued.

“Sarah did not have only one child that night.””

Mrs. Bennett suddenly gasped.

Victoria went completely still.

Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Lily has a twin.””

And the recording stopped.

Thomas stared at the machine.

Lily looked up.

“I have a brother?””

Mrs. Bennett began shaking her head.

“No. Not a brother.””

Victoria backed away from the desk.

Thomas slowly turned toward her.

“Then where is the other baby?””

Victoria's eyes moved toward the sealed envelope inside the safe.

And for the first time, Thomas realized that the secret room contained something far more dangerous than a hidden adoption.

It contained the truth about a child who had been missing for eleven years.
