Chapter 6: The Man Who Changed the Bloodline
Nobody moved.
The accusation hung in the hallway, heavier than the silence that followed it.
Richard stared at Alan Mercer.
The doctor looked at the floor, his mouth opening and closing as though he couldn't find enough air to speak.
Ethan stood behind his father, gripping the edge of the nursery door.
Sophia had begun crying quietly.
And Vanessa watched them all with the cold satisfaction of someone who had waited years for this moment.
"Tell me she's lying," Richard said.
Mercer lifted his head.
"Richard—"
"Tell me.""
The doctor looked at Ethan.
Then at the document.
Then, finally, at Richard.
"I didn't sabotage the car.""
Richard seized him by the front of his jacket.
"Then why does your name appear on the laboratory report? Why did you declare my wife dead when she was alive? Why did you disappear afterward?""
Mercer didn't fight back.
"Because I was afraid.""
Richard shoved him against the wall.
"Of whom?""
Mercer looked directly at Vanessa.
"Of her.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"That's pathetic.""
"You told me you had the original report destroyed," Mercer said.
"You told me nobody would ever find out about the child.""
Richard released him.
"Start from the beginning.""
Mercer straightened his jacket with shaking hands.
"I met Elizabeth when she was a medical volunteer at a clinic in Charlotte. Daniel introduced us. He was worried about her health, and she was worried about his business dealings.""
Richard frowned.
"Business dealings?""
"Daniel had inherited a substantial share of the Cole family fortune. He believed someone was using his identity to authorize transfers from the trust. Elizabeth helped him investigate.""
Mercer glanced at Vanessa.
"She was involved too.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Careful, Alan.""
He continued.
"During the investigation, Elizabeth discovered that the trust's original beneficiary records had been changed. A child born into the Cole family had been listed as the heir, but the records had been manipulated to make it appear that the child didn't exist.""
Richard looked at Ethan.
"You're saying Ethan was that child?""
Mercer nodded.
"Elizabeth gave birth to him in secret because she feared someone would take him. Daniel was her brother, not the father. He helped her protect the baby.""
Ethan's voice broke.
"Then who is my father?""
Mercer closed his eyes.
"Me.""
Ethan stepped back as if the word itself had struck him.
Richard's chest tightened.
"How?""
Mercer looked ashamed.
"Years ago, before Elizabeth married you, we had a relationship. It ended badly. I was engaged to someone else, and Elizabeth didn't want to destroy my career. When she discovered she was pregnant, she told me she would raise the child without involving me.""
"Then why did she marry me?"" Richard demanded.
"Because she loved you," Mercer replied.
"And because you were willing to give her the stable family she wanted. She believed that if Ethan grew up with a loving father, the truth about his biological parent wouldn't matter.""
Richard stared at him.
"She could have told me.""
"She should have.""
For the first time, Mercer sounded certain.
"Elizabeth knew that. She regretted it. But when Daniel discovered the trust fraud, everything became dangerous.
The people involved had access to the hospital records, the company accounts, and the legal documents. They could make Ethan disappear on paper without anyone noticing.""
Richard's mind raced.
"Who was involved?""
Mercer looked at Vanessa.
She smiled faintly.
"Don't look at me like that," she said.
"I was a young woman trying to survive.""
"You changed the birth records?"" Richard asked.
Vanessa shrugged.
"I corrected a mistake.""
"You altered my son's identity.""
"I protected my interests.""
Richard stepped toward her, but Ethan caught his arm.
"Please, Dad.""
Richard stopped.
His son's fingers were trembling.
"Don't let her make you do something you'll regret," Ethan whispered.
Richard looked at him and forced himself to breathe.
Then he turned back to Mercer.
"What happened the night Daniel died?""
Mercer took a long breath.
"Daniel called me. He said he had evidence that Vanessa had been moving money through shell companies. He wanted me to meet him at a private garage where he kept copies of the original records.""
"And you went?""
"No. I was already at the hospital with Elizabeth. She had discovered that the car she and Daniel planned to use had been tampered with.""
Richard felt his stomach tighten.
"She knew the brakes had been tampered with?""
"Yes. She tried to stop Daniel from leaving. He wouldn't listen. He believed the evidence had to be delivered to the authorities that night.""
Mercer rubbed his forehead.
"Elizabeth got into the passenger seat. She wanted to convince him to turn around. They were on the road when the brakes failed.""
"Who tampered with them?""
Mercer looked at Vanessa.
"She arranged it.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Prove it.""
"I saw the mechanic's invoice.""
"An invoice isn't proof of murder.""
"No," Mercer said.
"But the mechanic recorded your voice on his phone. He gave me a copy because he was afraid you'd come after him.""
Richard felt his pulse quicken.
"Where is that recording?""
Mercer looked toward the metal case.
"Inside.""
Vanessa lunged toward it.
Richard caught her by the arm.
"Don't.""
She twisted violently.
"Let go of me!""
Mr. Collins appeared in the doorway, followed by another guard.
Richard pointed toward Vanessa.
"Take her downstairs. Call the police. Tell them we have evidence of fraud, identity tampering, and a possible homicide.""
Vanessa struggled as the guards took her arms.
"You can't do this!"" she shouted.
"Richard, you need me!""
"No," he said.
"I needed you to be honest.""
She stared at him with pure hatred.
"You think you're better than me? You married a woman who lied to you every day. You raised another man's child and called him your own. Your entire life is built on a lie!""
Richard's expression didn't change.
"If loving Ethan makes me a fool, then I'll remain one.""
For the first time, Vanessa had nothing to say.
The guards escorted her downstairs.
Richard turned back to Mercer.
"Give me the recording.""
Mercer opened the case and removed a small digital recorder.
He pressed play.
At first, there was the sound of traffic and wind.
Then a woman's voice emerged.
Vanessa.
"Make sure the brakes fail before they reach the bridge.""
A man's voice answered, "You said you only wanted the documents.""
"I want the documents, and I want Daniel gone. If Elizabeth is with him, that's unfortunate.""
Richard felt the room tilt.
The recording continued.
"What about the baby?"" the man asked.
Vanessa replied without hesitation.
"The baby is the only reason any of this matters. If Daniel dies, I control the trust until the child turns eighteen. If Elizabeth dies too, nobody can challenge me.""
Richard stopped the recording.
His hands were shaking.
The words were unmistakable.
Vanessa had arranged the sabotage knowing that Elizabeth might be in the car.
She had planned to use Daniel's death to secure control of the trust.
And she had expected Ethan to remain a secret until he turned eighteen.
"How did you get this?"" Richard asked.
"The mechanic sent it to me the night after the crash. He disappeared shortly afterward.""
"Where is he now?""
"I don't know.""
Richard stared at the recorder.
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
Mercer looked down.
"Because I had falsified medical records. I had helped conceal Ethan's parentage. I was afraid I'd lose my license and go to prison.""
Richard's voice turned icy.
"So you allowed me to bury a stranger.""
Mercer closed his eyes.
"Yes.""
The admission was quiet.
It was also devastating.
Richard walked away from him and stood beside the window. The garden stretched beneath the morning sun, perfectly ordinary, as though the world hadn't just cracked open.
He thought of Elizabeth.
He thought of the years he had spent mourning her.
He thought of Ethan, who had grown up believing his father was a man who loved him without reservation.
The truth had arrived like a wrecking ball, but it hadn't destroyed the love Richard felt for his son.
If anything, it had made that love clearer.
He turned back.
"You're going to give every document, every recording, and every name to the police. You will tell them everything you know.""
Mercer nodded.
"I will.""
"And if you've lied about any part of this, I'll make sure they know that too.""
"I understand.""
Richard left the nursery and went downstairs.
Vanessa sat in the formal sitting room, guarded by Mr. Collins. She had stopped struggling. Her coat lay across her lap, and her eyes were fixed on the front door.
When Richard entered, she lifted her chin.
"Are you satisfied now?""
"No.""
He placed the recorder on the table.
"Why?""
Vanessa looked at the device.
For a moment, her expression softened into something almost human.
Then she smiled.
"Because you still haven't found Elizabeth.""
Richard felt his stomach tighten.
"Where is she?""
Vanessa leaned back.
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
"Maybe. But you should consider something, Richard. If Elizabeth is alive, why hasn't she contacted her children?
Why hasn't she returned to claim the trust? Why did she leave you to mourn her for three years?""
Richard stared at her.
He had asked himself those questions all morning.
But hearing them from Vanessa made them sound like weapons.
"She was afraid," he said.
"Of me?""
"Of what you might do to the children.""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Then why did she leave Ethan with you? Why did she leave Sophia with you? If she loved them so much, why did she disappear?""
Richard had no answer.
Vanessa leaned forward.
"Perhaps she didn't disappear because she was afraid. Perhaps she disappeared because she knew what she had done.""
Before Richard could respond, the front door opened.
A uniformed police officer entered, accompanied by a detective carrying a folder.
"Mr. Whitmore?""
Richard stood.
"Yes.""
"I'm Detective Harris. We received a report concerning a possible homicide and the falsification of medical records.""
He glanced toward Vanessa.
"Is this the woman involved?""
Richard nodded.
The detective approached her.
"Vanessa Cole, we need you to come with us.""
Vanessa rose slowly.
Then she looked directly at Richard.
"Before I go, you should know one more thing.""
Richard didn't respond.
She smiled.
"Elizabeth didn't just survive the crash. She was pregnant again.""
The room fell silent.
Richard felt the blood drain from his face.
"What?""
Vanessa adjusted her handbag.
"She was carrying Daniel's child when the car went off the road. The baby survived.""
Richard stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
"Ask Alan.""
He turned toward the hallway.
Mercer stood in the doorway, his face pale.
Richard looked at him.
"Was Elizabeth pregnant?""
Mercer hesitated.
Then he nodded.
"Yes.""
Richard's knees weakened.
"Did the baby survive?""
Mercer opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, Vanessa spoke.
"Of course the baby survived.""
She stepped toward the detective.
"Because the baby is the reason Elizabeth never came back.""
Richard felt a chill creep down his spine.
"Why?""
Vanessa looked at him over her shoulder.
"Because the child wasn't supposed to exist.""
The detective escorted her through the front doors.
Richard stood frozen in the sitting room, surrounded by evidence of a past he no longer understood.
Ethan and Sophia appeared at the top of the staircase.
"Is it over?"" Sophia asked.
Richard looked at his children.
He wanted to say yes.
He wanted to tell them that Vanessa was gone, that the truth had been found, and that their family could finally begin to heal.
But then his phone vibrated.
An incoming message from an unknown number.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Only a photograph.
Elizabeth stood in front of a small white house, older and thinner than Richard remembered, with a little girl beside her.
The child was about three years old.
She had Elizabeth's eyes.
And beneath her left ear was the same crescent-shaped birthmark Richard had seen on Ethan.
A second message appeared.
If you want your wife back, come alone.
And whatever you do, don't bring Ethan.
Richard stared at the screen.
Then he noticed the date stamped beneath the photograph.
It had been taken that morning.
Elizabeth was alive.
May you like
Her second child was alive.
And someone was watching them both.
