Chapter 5: The Nursery Wall

Richard reached the hallway in time to see Vanessa standing beside the nursery door.

A man in a gray jacket stood behind her, holding a metal case.

Richard recognized him from a photograph James had shown him that morning.

Dr. Alan Mercer.

The physician who had declared Elizabeth dead.

For three years, Richard had believed the man had retired quietly after a long career. Now he was standing in Richard's home, looking as though he expected to be arrested.

"Don't move," Richard ordered.

Vanessa turned.

For the first time since she had entered his life, she looked genuinely startled.

"Richard. I wasn't expecting you to be here.""

Richard almost laughed.

"This is my house.""

Dr. Mercer stepped forward.

"Mr. Whitmore, please. We can explain.""

"You can start by telling me why a retired doctor who signed my wife's death certificate is standing beside my children's nursery with a metal case.""

Mercer tightened his grip on the handle.

"There's been a misunderstanding.""

"Then misunderstand me clearly. Put the case down.""

Vanessa moved between them.

"Richard, you're frightening the children.""

"Where is Elizabeth?""

Her face went blank.

Richard took another step.

"She called me. She told me to look inside the nursery wall. So tell me, Vanessa, why would my supposedly dead wife know something hidden in my own house?""

Vanessa glanced at Mercer.

It was a small movement, but Richard caught it.

The doctor set the case down.

"Mrs. Whitmore asked me to come here.""

Richard felt his heartbeat in his throat.

"You admit she's alive?""

Mercer swallowed.

"I admit that I have information concerning her medical treatment.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

"Richard, enough. You're not thinking clearly.""

He turned on her.

"You don't get to tell me how to think anymore.""

She flinched.

Then, from behind the nursery door, Sophia cried out.

"Dad!""

Richard rushed inside.

The nursery had been converted into a storage room after Elizabeth's death, but he had never allowed anyone to remove the wooden cradle or the faded wallpaper. The room still smelled faintly of lavender, the scent Elizabeth had used throughout her pregnancy.

Sophia stood beside the old wardrobe.

Ethan was next to her, holding a screwdriver.

"What happened?"" Richard demanded.

Ethan pointed toward the wall behind the cradle.

"There's a panel here. It wasn't attached properly.""

Richard crouched.

A narrow strip of wallpaper had been peeled back. Beneath it, one of the wooden boards had been loosened.

He pulled the board free.

Behind it sat a small metal box.

Richard removed it carefully and placed it on the floor.

Sophia knelt beside him.

"Is that what Mom meant?""

"I think so.""

The box was secured with a combination lock.

Richard tried Elizabeth's birthday.

Nothing.

He tried his own.

Nothing.

Ethan stared at the lock.

"What about the day I was born?""

Richard entered the date from Ethan's birth certificate.

The lock clicked open.

Inside lay a bundle of letters, a tiny cassette recorder, and a photograph wrapped in tissue paper.

Richard lifted the photograph first.

It showed Elizabeth standing beside Daniel Cole outside a hospital. Daniel held a newborn baby in his arms.

The date on the back was six weeks before Ethan's official birth date.

Richard stared at the picture.

Daniel looked exhausted but happy. Elizabeth was crying, one hand pressed to her mouth.

Beneath the photograph lay a hospital bracelet.

The name on it was not Ethan Whitmore.

It read *Ethan Cole*.

Richard's knees weakened.

Ethan leaned over his shoulder.

"That's me?""

Richard nodded slowly.

"I think so.""

Ethan stared at the bracelet.

"Why would Mom call me Cole?""

Richard couldn't answer.

He picked up the letters.

The first was addressed to Elizabeth from Daniel.

Lizzie, I know you believe Richard will hate us if he discovers the truth. But you have to understand that I never wanted to hurt him. I wanted to tell him before the baby was born.

Richard's vision blurred.

He read the next lines.

If anything happens to me, please don't let Vanessa near the child. She has been asking questions about the trust, and I don't think she understands how dangerous this could become.

Richard looked up sharply.

"Vanessa knew Daniel.""

Ethan nodded.

"She told me he was my father.""

Richard continued reading.

Another letter, written in Elizabeth's hand, was folded beneath the first.

Daniel, I have made a terrible mistake. Richard knows about the pregnancy, but he believes the child is his because I let him believe it. I thought I could protect everyone by keeping the truth buried.

Richard stopped reading.

The room seemed to spin.

Elizabeth had known.

She had known that Ethan might not be his biological child, and she had allowed him to believe otherwise.

But the next line changed everything.

I did not lie because I was ashamed of Ethan. I lied because I discovered that someone had altered the records before he was born. The hospital file names a different father, and that man has threatened to take the baby if the truth comes out.

Richard stared at the page.

A different father?

Not Daniel?

He read on.

I believe Daniel is in danger. He has discovered the same thing. If he goes to the police, the people involved will destroy us all.

A noise came from the hallway.

Mercer was speaking urgently to Vanessa.

Richard couldn't hear every word, but one sentence carried clearly through the open door.

"You said the box had already been destroyed.""

Richard rose.

He stepped into the hallway.

Vanessa turned so quickly that the metal case toppled from Mercer's hand.

Several medical files scattered across the floor.

Richard bent and picked up the top page.

It was a hospital discharge summary.

Elizabeth Whitmore.

Date of admission: October 17, three years earlier.

Date of discharge: October 19.

Richard stared at the dates.

She had been discharged two days after the date she was declared dead.

The document listed her destination as a private rehabilitation facility in North Carolina.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

Dr. Alan Mercer.

Richard held the page up.

"You discharged my wife two days after you declared her dead?""

Mercer closed his eyes.

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Richard, let me explain.""

"No. You have had three years to explain.""

He turned toward the doctor.

"Where is she?""

Mercer looked at Vanessa again.

She gave him a tiny shake of her head.

Richard saw it.

"Answer me!""

Mercer finally spoke.

"She was alive when I discharged her.""

Richard felt as though someone had struck him.

"Then why did you tell me she was dead?""

Mercer swallowed.

"Because she asked me to.""

The answer made no sense.

Richard shook his head.

"You're lying.""

"I swear I'm not. Elizabeth was severely injured. She had a head injury, broken ribs, and internal bleeding.

She was unconscious for nearly two days. When she woke up, she was terrified.""

"Of what?""

Mercer looked toward Vanessa.

"Of her.""

Vanessa's face twisted.

"That's enough!""

But Richard was already moving toward the doctor.

"What did Vanessa do to my wife?""

Mercer backed away.

"I can't tell you everything here.""

"Then tell me what you can.""

The doctor lowered his voice.

"Elizabeth discovered that someone had been using her identity to move money through the Cole trust. She confronted Daniel, and they arranged to meet the night of his accident. She was in the car with him.""

Richard stopped breathing.

"She was in the car?""

Mercer nodded.

"Daniel died at the scene. Elizabeth was thrown from the vehicle. The emergency crew found her unconscious. By the time she reached the hospital, someone had already reported her dead.""

Richard stared at him.

"Who reported it?""

Mercer looked at Vanessa.

She was trembling now.

"Her.""

Richard turned slowly.

Vanessa's lips parted.

"You said she was dead," he whispered.

"I did what I had to do.""

"You let me bury someone else.""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Richard, I was trying to protect you.""

"Stop saying that!""

His shout shook the hallway.

"You used my grief to get into my life. You framed Maria. You threatened my son.

You stole my wife's documents. And now you expect me to believe that you did all of it out of love?""

Vanessa's tears vanished.

"Love has nothing to do with it anymore.""

She looked toward Ethan.

"It never did.""

Ethan stepped back.

Richard moved in front of his son.

"Don't you dare look at him.""

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

"Why not? He's the reason all of this happened.""

"No," Richard said.

"You're the reason.""

Mercer reached for the metal case.

Richard blocked him.

"Where is Elizabeth?""

The doctor hesitated.

Then he whispered, "She left the rehabilitation facility under another name. She was supposed to contact you when it was safe.""

"When?""

"After the trust was settled.""

Richard frowned.

"What trust?""

Mercer looked at the scattered documents.

"The Cole trust was never meant to belong to Vanessa. It was created to protect a child whose identity had been compromised. Elizabeth discovered that someone had used the child's records to claim a fortune that wasn't theirs.""

Richard looked at Ethan.

The boy's face had gone white.

"Someone used my records?""

Mercer nodded.

"And the original birth file identifies the person responsible.""

Richard's hands clenched.

"Where is it?""

Mercer reached into the case and pulled out a sealed envelope.

Before he could hand it over, Vanessa lunged.

She grabbed the envelope and tore it open.

Richard seized her wrist, but she had already pulled out the document.

Her eyes scanned the page.

Then she began to laugh.

Not nervously.

Not desperately.

She laughed as if the entire situation had finally become a joke only she understood.

"You still don't get it," she said.

Richard tightened his grip.

"What does the document say?""

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

Then she turned the page toward Richard.

The name listed as the biological father was not Daniel Cole.

It was not Richard Whitmore.

It was *Alan Mercer*.

Richard released Vanessa's wrist.

The doctor stood motionless.

Ethan stared at him.

Sophia covered her mouth.

Richard looked from the document to Mercer, struggling to understand what he was seeing.

"You're Ethan's father?""

Mercer shook his head violently.

"No. No, that document has been altered.""

Vanessa's laughter stopped.

"Has it?""

She pulled a second sheet from her handbag.

"This is the original laboratory report. Daniel wasn't Ethan's biological father. He knew it.

Elizabeth knew it. And the man who fathered Ethan has been standing in front of you the entire time.""

Richard stared at the doctor.

Mercer looked as though he might collapse.

May you like

Then Vanessa said something that made the room go silent.

"And if you want to know why Elizabeth survived the crash, Richard, ask Alan what he did to the brakes.""
