Chapter 6: The Family Secret
The wedding guests left slowly.
Not because the ceremony was over.
Because nobody wanted to be the first person to walk away.
The flowers remained.
The chairs remained.
The untouched cake remained.
Everything beautiful was still standing.
Except the family that had gathered around it.
Marcus sat alone beneath the wedding canopy.
The suit he had chosen weeks ago suddenly felt like a costume.
Across from him stood Evelyn.
His mother.
The woman who had raised him.
The woman who had always told him that honesty mattered more than comfort.
And now she was hiding something too.
“Tell me the truth.””
Evelyn looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That sentence has destroyed more trust today than any lie.””
She looked hurt.
But she didn’t argue.
“You’re right.””
He looked surprised.
Because Evelyn rarely admitted fault.
“I made mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
She sat across from him.
“I met Brielle before you did.””
Marcus stared.
“When?””
“Six months before your first date.””
His expression changed.
“Six months?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She came to me.””
“Why?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Because she was afraid.””
Marcus looked away.
“So she told you everything?””
“Not everything.””
“What did she tell you?””
Evelyn folded her hands.
“She told me about Daniel.””
Marcus waited.
“She told me she was trapped. She told me she needed help leaving him.””
“And you believed her?””
“At first.””
That answer surprised him.
“At first?””
Evelyn looked toward the empty garden.
“Then I found things that didn’t match.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What things?””
“She knew too much about our family.””
His eyebrows lowered.
“What do you mean?””
“She knew your father’s company history. She knew about our investments. She knew details that she should never have known.””
Marcus went silent.
Brielle had always seemed interested in his family.
He remembered that now.
The questions.
The curiosity.
The way she asked about his father’s business.
At the time, he thought she was simply trying to understand his world.
Now every memory felt different.
“Why didn’t you warn me?””
Evelyn’s eyes became wet.
“Because you were happy.””
“That’s not your decision to make.””
“I know.””
“No, Mom. You don’t.””
His voice broke.
“You took away my choice.””
Evelyn nodded.
“I know.””
A long silence passed.
Then Marcus asked:
“Why did you let the wedding happen?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because I hoped I was wrong.””
The answer was painful because it sounded exactly like something Marcus would have said.
Hope.
The thing that made people ignore the truth.
Behind them, footsteps approached.
Marcus turned.
Brielle stood there.
Her makeup was ruined.
Her wedding dress was stained.
She no longer looked like the woman from the magazines.
She looked exhausted.
“Can I talk to you?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Brielle looked at Evelyn.
“Please.””
Evelyn stood.
“I’ll give you a moment.””
She walked away.
Brielle sat across from Marcus.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then she whispered:
“I loved you.””
Marcus looked at her.
“I believe you did.””
The answer hurt her.
“But?””
“But I don’t know if you loved me enough to tell me the truth.””
She looked down.
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
“You don’t understand what Daniel did.””
“Then help me understand.””
She wiped her tears.
“When I met Daniel, I thought he was my escape.””
Her voice became quieter.
“He wasn’t.””
She described the years.
The control.
The threats.
The fear.
Marcus listened.
Because part of him wanted to hate her.
But another part remembered the moments when she looked afraid.
The nights she woke from nightmares.
The way she panicked whenever someone raised their voice.
Finally, Marcus asked:
“Did Nathan help you?””
Brielle froze.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She hesitated.
“He helped me leave.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Then why was he hiding it?””
“I don’t know.””
The answer came too quickly.
Marcus noticed.
“You do.””
Brielle looked away.
“Brielle.””
She swallowed.
“Nathan and I made mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
Before she could answer, a phone rang.
Both of them looked.
It was Evelyn’s phone.
She answered.
“Hello?””
Her face changed within seconds.
“What?””
Marcus stood.
“What happened?””
Evelyn slowly lowered the phone.
Her expression was one Marcus had never seen before.
Fear.
“What is it?””
She looked at Marcus.
“It’s Nathan.””
Marcus’s heart tightened.
“Where is he?””
Evelyn’s voice trembled.
“He wants to meet.””
“Why?””
She looked at Brielle.
Then at Marcus.
“Because he says Daniel isn’t the person you should be afraid of.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn gripped the phone.
“Nathan said there’s one final secret.””
The garden went silent.
“What secret?””
Evelyn looked at her son.
“He said Brielle didn’t marry Daniel for money.””
Marcus froze.
“Then why?””
Evelyn whispered the words Nathan had said.
“Because Daniel wasn’t the only person she was trying to escape.””
Marcus felt a chill move through him.
“Who else?””
Evelyn looked toward the road.
Where Nathan’s car was supposed to arrive.
Then she said:
“He said you need to ask yourself one question.””
Marcus waited.
“What question?””
May you like
Evelyn’s voice barely came out.
“Why did Brielle choose you?””
