Chapter 4: The Name Written in the Photograph

Marcus stared at the photograph until the ink blurred.

Not because the image was unclear.

Because his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

The woman standing beside Brielle and Daniel wasn’t a stranger.

It was his older brother.

Nathan Carter.

His own brother.

The man who had stood beside him when Marcus proposed.

The man who had toasted at the rehearsal dinner the night before.

The man who had hugged him and said, “You finally found someone who makes you happy.””

Marcus slowly lifted his eyes toward the crowd.

Nathan wasn’t there.

His absence suddenly felt louder than everyone’s whispers.

“Where is he?”” Marcus asked.

Nobody answered.

His voice became sharper.

“Where is Nathan?””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

She had been prepared for anger.

For tears.

For Marcus to hate her.

She had not been prepared for this question.

“Marcus…”

“Where is my brother?””

Brielle looked away.

That tiny movement was enough.

Marcus saw it.

“You knew.””

Her lips parted.

“Marcus, I can explain.””

He laughed quietly.

The sound was painful.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked around the garden.

“My mother knew. My bride knew. My brother knew.””

He held up the photograph.

“Am I the only person in my own life who didn’t know what was happening?””

Nobody spoke.

The wedding photographer lowered his camera.

The musicians stopped pretending they were invisible.

Even the children who had been running around the garden stood still.

Marcus turned back to Evelyn.

“You said Daniel came to your house.””

“Yes.””

“And he gave you this?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me Nathan was involved?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Because I didn’t know how.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

The honesty in her voice made him pause.

Evelyn had always been direct with him. Even when it hurt.

She walked closer.

“I found out Nathan was connected to Daniel only yesterday.””

Marcus stared.

“Yesterday?””

“Yes.””

“Then why come here today?””

Evelyn looked toward the wedding arch.

“Because I hoped I was wrong.””

Brielle wiped her face.

“Evelyn, you’re making this worse.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“You don’t get to tell her that.””

The words cut deep.

Brielle looked like she had been slapped.

“I’m your wife.””

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You were supposed to be.””

Silence.

A painful silence.

Brielle looked down.

For years, Marcus had imagined this day differently.

He imagined seeing her walk toward him.

He imagined taking her hand.

He imagined promising her every tomorrow.

Instead, he was standing in front of her wondering how many lies had been hidden behind her smile.

Evelyn reached into her bag and pulled out another envelope.

“There’s something else.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“Of course there is.””

Inside the envelope was a printed email.

He read the sender.

Daniel Whitmore.

The subject line made his stomach tighten.

*The Truth About Brielle Carter.*

Marcus looked at his mother.

“You read this?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed him?””

“I believed enough to investigate.””

She handed him another paper.

“A private investigator confirmed parts of his story.””

Marcus scanned the document.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Evelyn’s voice became quieter.

“Bank records.””

Marcus looked closer.

The transactions were dated months before he met Brielle.

Large payments.

Several accounts.

Several names.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Nathan Carter.

Marcus felt his hands go numb.

“No.””

Evelyn watched him carefully.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

“Nathan wouldn’t do this.””

Brielle whispered, “Marcus…”

He looked at her.

“Did you know?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

His face changed.

“You knew my brother was involved.””

“I knew Nathan knew Daniel.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Brielle looked like she was searching for the right words.

“There are things you don’t understand.””

Marcus stepped away.

“Then explain them.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time, Marcus saw something besides guilt.

He saw fear.

Real fear.

A sudden noise came from behind the guests.

A car door closing.

Everyone turned.

A man walked across the stone path toward the garden.

Tall.

Dark hair.

Calm expression.

The kind of person who entered a room knowing everyone would notice.

Marcus recognized him immediately.

Even without seeing him before.

Because he had seen his face in the photograph.

Daniel Whitmore.

The man Brielle was still legally married to.

The crowd erupted.

Brielle whispered:

“No.””

Daniel stopped several feet away.

His eyes moved from Marcus.

To Evelyn.

Then to Brielle.

“Hello, Brielle.””

Her face went completely white.

Marcus looked between them.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel gave a small smile.

“Yes.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Why are you here?””

Daniel looked at the wedding arch.

At the flowers.

At the ring waiting on the table.

Then he answered:

“Because I came to stop you from marrying my wife.””

A gasp moved through the crowd.

Marcus’s fists tightened.

Daniel looked directly at him.

“But that isn’t the worst part.””

He reached into his coat pocket.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“The worst part is what Brielle did after she thought I was gone.””

He handed it to Marcus.

Marcus stared at it.

“What is this?””

Daniel’s expression turned cold.

“Proof that the woman you were about to marry had another secret.””

Marcus opened the envelope.

And the first thing he saw made his heart stop.

May you like

A hospital record.

With his own name written on it.
