Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Scheme

Ethan left the wedding hall through a side corridor, with Daniel, Martin Hale, and the venue's security manager following him.

The music had stopped. Guests crowded near the entrance, whispering into phones and asking staff whether the ceremony would resume. A few had already left.

Ethan barely noticed.

He was thinking about his sister's warning.

Someone had tried to change the Carter family trust that morning.

Someone had used his electronic approval.

And Victoria had recognized the news before he had finished explaining it.

He entered a small conference room overlooking the venue's gardens and closed the door.

“Martin,” he said, “I want every document connected to Northbridge Holdings preserved. No one contacts the company until my attorney advises us.””

Hale nodded.

“Agreed.””

Daniel pulled out a chair.

“Sit down before you fall down.””

“I'm fine.””

“You're about three seconds away from punching a wall.””

Ethan looked at his hands.

Daniel was right. His fingers were trembling again.

He sat.

The conference room smelled of fresh coffee and expensive furniture polish. Through the windows, he could see guests gathering beneath white umbrellas in the courtyard, their wedding clothes bright against the dark green hedges.

A few hours ago, he had imagined standing there with Victoria, thanking everyone for coming.

Now he was trying to determine whether the woman he had loved had been part of a scheme that reached into his family's financial foundations.

His phone rang.

Olivia.

“Tell me everything,” he said.

His sister took a breath.

“Dad's estate administrator found the attempted request in the trust's security log. It was submitted at 10:42 this morning.””

Ethan checked the time.

He had been in the hotel suite with Daniel then, getting ready for the ceremony.

“Did it come from my office?””

“That's what they're checking. The request was routed through a corporate account, but the digital approval appears to have been generated using your credentials.””

“Can it be traced?””

“The security team is working on it. Ethan, there's something else. Dad's old estate attorney called me.””

Ethan straightened.

“Why?””

“He said he received an inquiry six weeks ago about whether you had ever established a separate trust for a future spouse.””

“From whom?””

“He wouldn't give me a name over the phone. He wants to speak to you directly.””

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“Arrange the call.””

“I will. Are you okay?””

He looked through the window.

“No.””

Olivia's voice softened.

“You don't have to pretend with me.””

For a moment, he couldn't speak.

Then he said, “I thought I knew her.””

“I know.””

“I thought she loved me.””

“I know that, too.””

“What if I missed something obvious?””

Olivia was quiet for a moment.

“Then you were human, Ethan. You trusted someone. That doesn't make you stupid.””

He closed his eyes.

“Mom would have seen through her.””

“Maybe. Or maybe Mom would have told you that loving someone is always a risk.””

Ethan remembered his mother's hands, the soft wool blanket around her shoulders, the way she had smiled even when she was exhausted.

Never confuse being wanted with being loved.

He swallowed.

“Thanks, Liv.””

“Come home when you're ready. And Ethan?””

“Yes?””

“Don't let Victoria convince you that this happened because you weren't enough.””

The call ended.

Ethan sat quietly for several seconds.

Then Daniel placed a glass of water in front of him.

“You heard her,” Daniel said.

“Drink that.””

Ethan took a sip.

Martin Hale opened his briefcase again.

“I may have found a connection,” he said.

Ethan looked up.

“Go on.””

“Northbridge Advisory was incorporated four years ago. Its listed directors changed twice, but the registered office has remained the same. A company with that address has conducted business with Bennett Property Group.””

“Richard's company?””

“Yes.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Can you prove Richard owns Northbridge?””

“Not yet. The ownership is routed through two holding companies, and one of them is registered overseas. But I found something that might be more useful.””

Hale placed a printed email on the table.

“The firm contacted me because they wanted a background report on Mr. Carter. The request came from an individual who claimed to represent Victoria Bennett. The payment came from a Northbridge account.””

Ethan read the page.

The language was formal, almost sterile.

The client requested information about his personal assets, inheritance arrangements, business interests, and any existing restrictions on the transfer of wealth following marriage.

It was not the language of a woman planning a romantic future.

It was the language of someone preparing an acquisition.

“Did you send them anything?”” Ethan asked.

“No sensitive financial details. I only provided information available through legitimate public records. When I noticed discrepancies in the documents they supplied, I stopped work and raised concerns.””

Ethan nodded.

“Good.””

Hale hesitated.

“There is one more thing. The engagement letter included a handwritten note asking that the report be completed before the wedding date.””

“Whose handwriting?””

“I can't confirm that yet.””

Ethan stared at the note.

The date had been underlined twice.

Victoria hadn't simply planned to marry him.

She had been working toward a deadline.

Before Ethan could ask another question, Daniel's phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

“It's Natalie.””

Ethan immediately held out his hand.

“Put her on speaker.””

Daniel answered.

“Hey, Natalie. You're on speaker with Ethan.””

A woman's voice filled the room.

“Ethan? I've been trying to reach you. I heard something happened at the wedding.””

“What did you hear?””

“That the ceremony was canceled. Is Victoria okay?””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

The question was innocent enough.

But it was the wrong question.

“I'm more interested in a document that came through your office,” he said.

“A revised agreement involving my family trust.””

Silence.

Then Natalie said, “I don't know what you're talking about.””

“An electronic approval was submitted this morning using my credentials.””

“Oh, my God.””

“Did you send the revised agreement to Reynolds's office?””

Natalie hesitated.

“I forwarded an email that came from your account.””

“Did you verify it with me?””

“You were in meetings all morning. The message said it was urgent.””

“What address did it come from?””

“I don't remember exactly. It looked like your usual address.””

“Can you check?””

“Yes. Give me a minute.””

They heard the sound of typing.

Daniel stood and moved toward the window.

Ethan waited, his pulse quickening.

Finally, Natalie spoke again.

“Ethan, there's something strange. The email was sent from an address almost identical to yours, but one character was different.””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Did you open the attachment?””

“Yes.””

“Did you forward it?””

“Yes.””

“To whom?””

“To Reynolds's office, and then to the estate administrator because the message said the trust documents needed to be updated before your wedding.””

“Who wrote the message?””

“I don't know.””

“Did anyone tell you to expect it?””

“No.””

Ethan breathed slowly.

“Natalie, I need you to preserve everything. The original email, the attachment, the forwarding records, all of it. Don't delete anything or contact the sender.””

“I will.””

“Have you ever discussed my trust with Victoria?””

Another pause.

“Once,” Natalie admitted.

“She called me about a week ago. She said you wanted her to understand how family matters would work after the wedding.””

Ethan's stomach tightened.

“What did you tell her?””

“Nothing confidential. I explained that your attorneys handled those arrangements.””

“Did she ask for copies of anything?””

“She asked who managed the trust. I told her I couldn't provide personal contact details without authorization.””

“Did she seem upset?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Natalie hesitated.

“She said it was strange that you trusted me with your schedule but didn't trust your future wife with information about your family's assets.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

The pieces were becoming clearer.

Victoria had wanted access.

When the prenup didn't give her what she wanted, someone had tried to create another route.

“Thank you, Natalie,” Ethan said.

“You're not in trouble for reporting this. But please keep everything confidential until Reynolds contacts you.””

“I will. Ethan?””

“Yes?””

“I'm so sorry.””

He ended the call.

Daniel turned away from the window.

“Someone impersonated you, used your assistant, and tried to alter the trust documents.””

“That's what it looks like.””

“Do you still think Victoria was working alone?””

Ethan stared at the printed email.

“No.””

A knock sounded at the door.

The security manager entered.

“Mr. Carter, the woman who provided the recording is asking to speak with you. She says she has the document she mentioned.””

“Madison?””

“Yes.””

“Bring her in.””

Madison entered a minute later, carrying a large envelope. Her makeup had smudged beneath her eyes, and she had changed out of her heels into a pair of flat shoes someone had found for her.

She looked at Ethan and immediately began to cry.

“I'm sorry,” she said.

He gestured toward a chair.

“Sit down.””

She remained standing.

“I should have told you earlier. I should have said something months ago.””

“Why didn't you?””

Madison wiped her cheeks.

“Because Victoria was my best friend. We grew up together. Our families knew each other. When she first started dating you, she told me she was terrified of getting hurt.””

“And then?””

“She said you were perfect. Wealthy, powerful, generous. She said you could give her everything she'd ever wanted.””

Ethan's expression remained still.

Madison looked down at the envelope.

“At first, I thought she meant a happy life. A home. Children.

Security. But then she started talking about the prenup. She said it was an insult and that you were treating her like a stranger.””

“She asked you to help her get around it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She wanted me to introduce her to someone who understood corporate law. I refused. Then she said her father had already arranged everything.””

“Did she name the person?””

“No. She said there was a consultant who could make sure she wasn't left with nothing if the marriage ended.””

Ethan nodded toward the envelope.

“What did you bring?””

Madison placed it on the table.

“Copies of emails and a draft document Victoria sent me. I kept them because I was afraid she'd try to blame me if something went wrong.””

Hale opened the envelope carefully.

Inside were printed messages, several pages of corporate paperwork, and a draft agreement bearing Ethan's name.

The language was dense, but one section stood out.

If Ethan became incapacitated under circumstances defined by a separate authorization, Victoria would be nominated to act as an interim representative for specified financial interests.

The provision did not grant her immediate ownership of Carter Industries. It did, however, appear designed to give her access to sensitive decisions and create a legal dispute if challenged.

Ethan's stomach turned.

“Who drafted this?””

Madison shook her head.

“I don't know. But look at the last page.””

Hale turned it over.

At the bottom was a name.

*Jonathan Reed, Northbridge Advisory.*

Daniel swore.

“That's our missing link.””

“Maybe,” Hale cautioned.

“We still need to authenticate the document and establish who authorized it.””

Ethan studied the signature block.

“Can we contact Reed?””

“I can,” Hale said.

“But we should let Reynolds coordinate any formal requests.””

Madison suddenly leaned forward.

“There's something else you need to know.””

Ethan looked at her.

“What?””

“Victoria told me the plan wasn't only about the money she'd get after a divorce.””

“What did she mean?””

Madison's voice dropped.

“She said if you ever became unable to run your company, she would have a chance to influence who controlled it next.””

Ethan felt the air leave his lungs.

“My company has a board. My father established succession rules years ago.””

“I know. But Victoria said her father had found a weakness in those rules.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That's not possible without someone on the inside.””

Madison looked at him.

“That's what scared me.””

Ethan stared at the documents.

Then he noticed a line in the draft that he hadn't seen before.

A reference to a board meeting scheduled for the following Monday.

He looked up.

“Why would this document refer to a board meeting?””

Hale leaned closer.

“Let me see.””

He examined the page, then turned to the attached correspondence.

His face changed.

“What is it?”” Ethan demanded.

Hale pointed to a sentence in the email.

The transition must be completed before the scheduled vote on executive authority.

Ethan knew about that vote.

The board was reviewing a proposed restructuring of Carter Industries. It was routine, but it would determine who could authorize certain emergency financial decisions.

He had planned to attend.

Victoria knew about the meeting because he had discussed it with her over dinner.

He had thought she was interested in his work.

Now he wondered whether she had been studying his vulnerabilities.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“I'm calling Reynolds.””

“Do it,” Ethan said.

But before Daniel could place the call, Ethan's own phone rang.

The screen displayed his father's name.

He answered immediately.

“Dad?””

His father's voice was unusually sharp.

“Ethan, where are you?””

“At the venue.””

“Listen carefully. The board has just received an emergency petition challenging your authority to act as chief executive.””

Ethan stood.

“What?””

“It claims that you may be subject to undue influence and that certain recent decisions require independent review.””

Ethan stared at the documents.

“Who filed it?””

His father hesitated.

May you like

Then he said the words that made Ethan's blood run cold.

“Richard Bennett.””
