Chapter 4: The Signature That Could Destroy Him
Ethan read the attorney's message three times.
The revised agreement you approved three weeks ago contains a provision that should never have been included.
Someone inserted it after our final review.
And the signature authorizing the change appears to be yours.
For several seconds, the wedding hall seemed to recede around him. The guests were still whispering. Victoria stood beside the altar, her white gown spread across the marble floor like a pool of snow, watching him with an expression that suggested she knew something he didn't.
Ethan called Mr. Reynolds.
The attorney answered immediately.
“Ethan, don't sign anything else, and don't agree to any private settlement until I've explained what I've found.””
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
“I compared the version we approved with the version your office received before the wedding. There's an additional provision concerning management authority over certain Carter family assets if you become incapacitated.””
Ethan's fingers tightened around his phone.
“That's impossible. I never approved that.””
“The signature is electronically authenticated under your name.””
“Then the authentication was compromised.””
“That's what I'm investigating. But there's another problem. The document identifies Victoria Bennett as an authorized temporary representative under certain circumstances.””
Ethan looked across the hall.
Victoria was whispering urgently to her father.
“What circumstances?””
“That's the part I don't like. The language is broad enough to create an immediate legal dispute over who can act on your behalf if your capacity is challenged. It doesn't automatically give her control of Carter Industries, but someone has drafted it to create leverage.””
“Who prepared the revised document?””
“Our office prepared the original. The altered version came through an email account associated with your executive assistant.””
Ethan's stomach tightened.
His assistant, Natalie, had worked for him for six years. She knew his schedule, his habits, and the way he handled sensitive documents. He trusted her almost as much as he trusted Daniel.
“Send me the email chain,” Ethan said.
“I already have. I'm coming to the venue now.””
“Bring a forensic document specialist if you can.””
“Already contacted one. Ethan, I need you to hear me. This could be an attempt at fraud, but we need evidence before we make accusations.””
“Understood.””
“And whatever Victoria says, don't confront her alone.””
Ethan glanced toward the altar.
“I think we're past that point.””
He ended the call.
Daniel stood beside him, his expression grim.
“What did Reynolds find?””
Ethan explained.
Daniel swore under his breath.
“Someone altered your legal documents using your name?””
“Apparently.””
“And Victoria knew?””
“I don't know yet.””
Daniel looked toward the bride.
“After that recording, I'm willing to believe almost anything.””
Across the room, Richard Bennett had pulled Victoria into a quiet corner near the floral arrangements. He was speaking through clenched teeth.
“You told me the paperwork was settled,” Richard whispered.
Victoria's smile had vanished.
“It was.””
“Then why is Carter's attorney investigating?””
“Because Ethan decided to turn the wedding into a public execution.””
“Don't blame him for what you've done.””
Victoria recoiled.
“You told me this would work.””
Richard grabbed her elbow.
“Keep your voice down.””
She pulled away.
“Don't touch me.””
For the first time that afternoon, Richard looked at his daughter not with authority but with fear.
“You assured me the document was clean.””
“It was supposed to be.””
“Supposed to be?””
Victoria glanced toward Ethan.
“I didn't know someone changed the final version.””
Richard stared at her.
“You were the one who sent it to Madison.””
“I sent her a draft. I didn't know she'd keep copies.””
“You told me you had everything under control.””
Victoria's eyes flashed.
“Maybe if you hadn't insisted on rushing the wedding, I would have had time to check everything.””
Richard's face reddened.
“Do not put this on me.””
Ethan couldn't hear every word, but he saw enough to recognize the pattern. Richard was trying to control the situation. Victoria was trying to escape responsibility.
Neither was asking whether Ethan had been hurt.
Then Victoria spotted him watching.
Her expression changed instantly.
She crossed the hall, gathering her gown in one hand.
“Ethan, please,” she said.
“Can we talk privately?””
“No.””
“Just five minutes.””
“You've had eighteen months.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know what it looks like.””
“You called me an idiot for believing you loved me.””
“I was angry.””
“You planned to divorce me after six months.””
“I was scared.””
“You told Madison you only wanted my money.””
Victoria lowered her voice.
“I didn't mean it the way it sounded.””
Ethan almost laughed.
“Then how did you mean it?””
She glanced at the guests.
“Not here.””
“Why? Are you worried about your reputation?””
She flinched.
He continued, “You were happy to discuss my fortune in private. You seemed perfectly comfortable planning our divorce over the phone. But now that people have heard you, suddenly privacy matters.””
“Ethan, I love you.””
“No. You love the version of me you thought you could control.””
Victoria reached for his hand.
He stepped back.
“Don't.””
Her fingers fell to her side.
For a moment, she looked as if she might slap him. Instead, she drew a shaky breath and forced herself to smile.
“You think you're so clever,” she whispered.
“You think one recording makes you the hero.””
“I don't need to be the hero.””
“Then what do you want?””
“The truth.””
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
“Be careful what you ask for.””
Before Ethan could respond, the wedding coordinator approached with a pale, frightened expression.
“Mr. Carter? There's a gentleman at the entrance asking for you. He says it's urgent.””
“Who is he?””
“He says his name is Martin Hale. He's a private investigator.””
Victoria stopped breathing.
Ethan noticed.
So did Daniel.
“Send him in,” Ethan said.
A few minutes later, a lean man in a charcoal suit entered the hall carrying a worn leather briefcase. He appeared to be in his early fifties, with silver hair and a face accustomed to delivering bad news.
He approached Ethan and extended his hand.
“Mr. Carter. I apologize for arriving in the middle of your wedding.””
“You're not the first person to ruin my afternoon.””
Hale gave a brief, uncomfortable smile.
“I was contacted by someone who believed your financial identity had been used without your authorization. I was asked to verify a series of documents and transactions.””
“By whom?””
Hale glanced at Victoria.
“By your bride.””
A stunned silence followed.
Victoria stepped forward.
“That's a lie.””
Hale opened his briefcase.
“I have the original engagement letter, payment records, and correspondence.””
Richard moved toward him.
“This is a private family matter.””
Hale didn't look at him.
“Mr. Bennett, I wasn't retained by you.””
Ethan stared at Victoria.
“You hired a private investigator to investigate me?””
“No,” she said quickly.
“That's not what happened.””
Hale removed a thin folder.
“The initial request concerned Mr. Carter's financial holdings and the structure of his family trust. However, during my work, I discovered that several documents supplied to me appeared to have been modified.””
Ethan felt the pieces shifting.
“Modified how?””
“Certain pages identified Victoria Bennett as a potential representative of your assets under conditions that didn't appear in the publicly available corporate records.””
“Who supplied those documents?””
Hale looked down at his notes.
“An intermediary working for a consulting firm called Northbridge Advisory.””
Richard's expression changed so quickly that Ethan nearly missed it.
But Hale didn't.
“Does that name mean something to you, Mr. Bennett?””
Richard straightened his jacket.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Ethan stepped closer.
“Mr. Hale, can you establish whether my signature was copied or electronically applied?””
“I can provide a preliminary assessment. A full forensic examination will take longer.””
“Then do it.””
“I will. But I need to tell you something else. The documents weren't simply designed to benefit your bride. They also included an authorization connected to a company that appears to be associated with Northbridge Advisory.””
Hale handed Ethan a page.
At the bottom was a corporate name.
*Northbridge Holdings LLC.*
Ethan had never heard of it.
Daniel leaned over his shoulder.
“Who owns it?””
“We're still verifying the ownership structure,” Hale said.
“But I found an unusual payment trail connecting the consulting firm to an account that received funds from a company controlled by Mr. Bennett.””
Richard stepped forward.
“This is outrageous. You're making allegations based on incomplete information.””
“I'm describing what my preliminary investigation uncovered.””
“You have no right to discuss confidential matters in front of these people.””
Hale closed the folder.
“I have every right to provide my findings to the person who retained me.””
Victoria looked from Hale to her father.
“Dad,” she whispered, “what is he talking about?””
Richard didn't answer.
For the first time, Victoria seemed to realize that the situation had moved beyond her control.
She had expected a humiliating argument, perhaps a canceled wedding, perhaps an angry billionaire who would eventually retreat into silence.
She hadn't expected an investigator carrying records that might implicate her own family.
Ethan looked at Richard.
“Do you know who owns Northbridge Holdings?””
Richard's mouth tightened.
“No.””
“Then you won't mind if our attorneys examine every transaction between your companies and theirs.””
Richard stared at him.
“You'll destroy yourself doing that.””
“Maybe,” Ethan said.
“But I won't do it by pretending nothing happened.””
His phone vibrated again.
This time, the message came from Olivia.
Ethan, Dad just called me. He says someone tried to access the Carter family trust this morning. Did you authorize anything?
Ethan felt the blood drain from his face.
He immediately called his sister.
Olivia answered on the first ring.
“Ethan, thank God. Where are you?””
“At the venue. What do you mean someone accessed the trust?””
“I was at Dad's office when the security team called. They detected an attempted change to the list of authorized representatives. It was blocked, but the request came with what appeared to be your electronic approval.””
“Who had access?””
“Dad's estate administrator is checking. Ethan, the request named Victoria.””
Across the room, Victoria watched him.
Her expression had changed again.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Ethan lowered his phone.
“You knew about the trust request,” he said.
Victoria swallowed.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
“Someone tried to add you as an authorized representative this morning.””
Her lips parted.
Richard turned sharply toward her.
“Victoria?””
She looked at her father, then at Ethan.
And in that brief silence, Ethan understood something more disturbing than the recording.
Victoria might have been willing to marry him for money.
But someone had tried to reach beyond his marriage and into his family's most protected assets.
May you like
Someone had planned for the wedding to accomplish something the divorce never could.
And the evidence was beginning to point toward a secret neither Victoria nor her father could afford to reveal.
