Chapter 7: The Signature That Could Steal My Children’s Future

"Do not sign that document, Ethan.""

My voice came out sharper than I intended.

On the other end of the phone, I could hear hospital monitors beeping, hurried footsteps, and Eleanor's unmistakable voice giving instructions to someone nearby.

"Claire, I don't understand what's happening," Ethan whispered.

"Then listen carefully. If that document says you have no other biological children, signing it could be used against Lily and Leo.""

Ethan exhaled.

"My mother says it's just a declaration for the family trust.""

"Your mother has already forged my medical records, hidden my pregnancy, and helped conceal another child. Why would you trust her now?""

He didn't answer.

Then I heard Eleanor.

"Give me the phone, Ethan.""

"No.""

The word surprised me.

It surprised him, too.

"Ethan, don't be ridiculous," Eleanor snapped.

He moved away from her.

"Claire, I need you here.""

"I'm coming.""

I ended the call and hurried toward my car.

Before starting the engine, I called my mother.

"Mom, I need you to do something for me.""

"What's happened?""

"Take Lily and Leo somewhere safe. Don't go home. Don't tell anyone where you're going.""

Her voice immediately changed.

"Claire, what is it?""

I explained everything.

When I finished, she was silent.

Then she said, "Your father would have been proud of you.""

I swallowed.

"Mom, please.""

"I know. I'll take care of them.""

"And Mom?""

"Yes?""

"If anyone asks about the children, don't tell them anything.""

"I understand.""

I drove toward Manhattan.

For the first time in six years, I wasn't running away from the Cole family.

I was driving straight toward them.

The private maternity wing of St. Catherine's Hospital was unusually crowded.

Two security guards stood outside the elevator.

A nurse hurried past carrying a clipboard.

I found Ethan near the reception desk.

His shirt was wrinkled, his tie was hanging loose, and his face looked gray.

When he saw me, he approached immediately.

"Claire.""

"Where's Brooke?""

"Inside. The doctors are monitoring her.""

"Is the baby all right?""

"They're concerned about some complications. They haven't told me much yet.""

I glanced at the folder in his hand.

"Show me the document.""

He handed it over.

The first page contained a declaration of paternity and family status.

The second page was worse.

It stated that Ethan acknowledged the unborn child as his first and only biological heir.

A paragraph beneath it read:

The undersigned confirms that no other biological offspring exist or have been concealed from the Cole family trust.

I looked up.

"Who drafted this?""

"My mother's lawyer.""

"Has your lawyer reviewed it?""

"My mother says he isn't needed.""

I stared at him.

"Of course she does.""

Eleanor appeared at the end of the corridor.

She was wearing a cream-colored suit, pearl earrings, and an expression of absolute control.

Two men in dark suits followed her.

She stopped when she saw me.

"Claire.""

"Eleanor.""

"I specifically asked Ethan not to involve you.""

I looked at the document.

"Then you shouldn't have involved my children.""

Her expression remained calm.

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

I almost laughed.

"Your lawyer has just prepared a document declaring that Lily and Leo don't exist.""

"That's a serious accusation.""

"Read the second page.""

Eleanor glanced at Ethan.

"Have you signed it?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because Claire says it could affect the children.""

Eleanor gave a small, disappointed sigh.

"Claire is not a legal expert.""

"Neither are you," I replied.

"Yet you've apparently spent six years rewriting medical records and family history.""

Her eyes hardened.

"Be careful.""

I stepped closer.

"No. You be careful.""

One of the lawyers moved forward.

"Mrs. Bennett, this is a private family matter.""

I turned toward him.

"Then why is a legal declaration being prepared without a proper review, and why does it contain false information?""

He adjusted his glasses.

"The document concerns the anticipated child and the family trust.""

"Then it should concern the truth.""

Eleanor folded her arms.

"The Cole family has obligations that you don't understand.""

I looked directly at her.

"You're right. I don't understand why a grandmother would spend years trying to erase her own grandchildren.""

Her expression flickered.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

"You have no proof that those children are Ethan's," she said.

Ethan stepped forward.

"I believe they're mine.""

Eleanor turned sharply.

"You believe?""

"I saw them. I saw their faces.""

"That proves nothing.""

"Then we'll do a DNA test.""

The corridor fell silent.

Eleanor looked at him as if he had betrayed her.

"Absolutely not.""

Ethan stared.

"Why?""

"Because this is unnecessary.""

"Then you shouldn't have a problem with it.""

Her voice dropped.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

I watched her carefully.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely frightened.

Not angry.

Frightened.

And that told me more than any confession could.

A nurse approached.

"Mr. Cole?""

Ethan turned.

"Yes?""

"Brooke is awake. She is asking for you.""

Eleanor immediately stepped forward.

"I'll go.""

The nurse looked confused.

"She asked for her husband.""

Eleanor's mouth tightened.

Ethan followed the nurse.

I started to move after him.

But Eleanor blocked my path.

"You need to leave.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because this has gone far enough.""

"Not even close.""

She leaned toward me.

"Do you really think you can destroy everything I've built?""

I stared at her.

"You destroyed my marriage.""

"You were never going to be part of this family.""

"You made me believe I couldn't have children.""

"That was unfortunate.""

I went completely still.

Unfortunate.

She had just admitted it.

Not accidentally.

Not through a slip of the tongue.

She had looked me in the eyes and dismissed six years of suffering as an inconvenience.

I took out my phone.

"Say that again.""

Her face changed.

"Put that away.""

"Why?""

"You're recording me.""

"Then choose your words carefully.""

She stepped closer.

"Claire, you have no idea what I sacrificed to protect my son.""

I lowered the phone slightly.

"Protect him from what?""

She looked toward the maternity room.

Then she whispered:

"From you.""

I stared.

"From me?""

"From a woman who couldn't give him a future.""

My hands tightened around the phone.

"That wasn't my fault.""

"You were always so desperate to become a mother that you couldn't see what was happening around you.""

I felt my stomach turn.

"What happened, Eleanor?""

She smiled coldly.

"Ask your husband.""

Then she walked away.

Inside Brooke's room, Ethan stood beside the bed.

Brooke looked pale.

An IV ran into her arm, and a heart monitor beeped beside her.

When she saw me, she turned her face away.

"Why is she here?""

Ethan pulled a chair closer.

"Because I need answers.""

Brooke closed her eyes.

"Not now.""

"Brooke, what is Sophie?""

Her eyes opened.

The name seemed to drain what little color remained in her face.

Ethan leaned forward.

"Who is Sophie?""

Brooke looked at Eleanor, who had just entered the room.

"Mom?""

Eleanor stiffened.

"Don't.""

I noticed.

So did Ethan.

"Mom?"" he repeated.

Brooke looked between them.

Then she began crying.

"I can't do this.""

Ethan stood.

"Do what?""

"Keep pretending.""

He stared at her.

"Tell me the truth.""

Brooke wiped her cheeks.

"Sophie is my daughter.""

Silence.

Ethan's mouth opened.

Then closed.

"Your daughter?""

Brooke nodded.

"She's seven.""

"Why did you tell everyone she was your sister?""

Brooke looked toward Eleanor.

"Because your mother arranged it.""

Ethan turned.

"Mom?""

Eleanor remained near the door.

"Brooke was young. She made a difficult decision.""

"She had a child!""

"She was not ready to raise one.""

Brooke shook her head.

"I wanted to keep her.""

Eleanor's expression hardened.

"You wanted to keep your career, your social position, and your future with Ethan. You couldn't have all three.""

Brooke began sobbing.

Ethan looked at her.

"Why did you tell my mother I was the father?""

Brooke looked down.

"Because I believed you were.""

His face went white.

"What?""

"We were together during that period.""

Ethan shook his head.

"I was married.""

"I know.""

"You knew I was married to Claire.""

"I know.""

He took a step back.

"Did we have an affair?""

Brooke covered her face.

"Yes.""

I felt the room tilt.

Ethan stared at her.

"How long?""

"Almost four months.""

He gripped the back of the chair.

"Why didn't you tell me about the pregnancy?""

"Your mother told me not to.""

"Why?""

Brooke looked at Eleanor.

"Because she said if the child was yours, she would take care of everything.""

Eleanor snapped.

"That's enough.""

But Brooke continued.

"She said the baby would complicate your divorce. She said Claire's medical condition made her unsuitable to remain in the family. She said you needed a clean beginning.""

Ethan looked sick.

"And you agreed?""

Brooke began crying harder.

"I was twenty-four. I was scared.""

"You're thirty now.""

"I know.""

"Where is Sophie?""

"With my parents.""

"Does she know you're her mother?""

Brooke shook her head.

"She thinks I'm her sister.""

Ethan looked away.

Then he turned toward Eleanor.

"You did this?""

Eleanor lifted her chin.

"I protected the family.""

"From a seven-year-old child?""

"From instability.""

I stepped forward.

"And from my children.""

Eleanor looked at me.

"Your children were never supposed to be part of this.""

The words came out before she could stop them.

Ethan slowly turned toward her.

"What did you just say?""

Eleanor said nothing.

I held up my phone.

"I recorded that.""

Her face went pale.

Then a doctor entered the room.

"Mr. Cole, we need to speak with you.""

Ethan looked at him.

"What is it?""

The doctor glanced at Brooke.

"Your wife's condition is stable, but we need to discuss the baby's status.""

Ethan's face tightened.

"Is the baby all right?""

The doctor hesitated.

"We've identified something in the preliminary records that needs clarification.""

Eleanor immediately stepped forward.

"Doctor, this is a private matter.""

He looked at her.

"I'm afraid it's a medical matter.""

Then he turned toward Ethan.

"Mr. Cole, before you sign any declaration about the baby, we strongly recommend that you establish the biological relationship through appropriate testing.""

Ethan stared.

"Why?""

The doctor glanced at the chart.

"Because the prenatal history contains information that doesn't match the family declaration.""

Brooke started crying again.

Eleanor looked furious.

I watched Ethan's expression change.

He looked at Brooke.

Then at the doctor.

Then at his mother.

"What's going on?""

Nobody answered.

Finally, Brooke whispered:

"Ethan, I need to tell you something about the baby.""

And the door behind us opened.

A young woman stood there holding a little girl's hand.

The little girl had dark brown hair and a familiar smile.

Brooke's face crumpled.

"Sophie?""

The child looked at her.

May you like

"Why are you crying, big sister?""

And for the first time, the entire Cole family had nowhere left to hide.
