Chapter 3: The Medical Report He Hid

I couldn't hear the guests anymore.

I couldn't hear the soft piano music playing near the dessert table.

All I could hear was Brooke's voice repeating itself inside my head.

The one that proved you could have children all along.

I turned toward Ethan.

"Explain.""

He looked at Brooke.

"Not here.""

I laughed bitterly.

"That's becoming your favorite sentence tonight.""

"Claire, please.""

"What medical report?""

His eyes flickered toward the children.

Then toward my mother.

Finally, he looked at me.

"It was complicated.""

"Try me.""

Brooke crossed her arms.

"Oh, don't pretend you don't remember. You brought that envelope home. You put it in your study drawer.""

Ethan's face hardened.

"Brooke, stop talking.""

"Why? She's entitled to know.""

I stared at her.

"How do you know about it?""

She hesitated.

Then shrugged.

"Because Ethan told me.""

My stomach twisted.

"When?""

"Before we got married.""

Ethan closed his eyes.

I felt my mother's hand tighten around Leo's.

"Claire," she whispered, "let's take the children home.""

I shook my head.

"Not yet.""

Ethan stepped closer.

"That report wasn't what you think.""

"Then tell me what it was.""

He lowered his voice.

"The doctor found something unusual.""

"What?""

"Something about the test results.""

I stared at him.

"Speak clearly.""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Your results weren't as bad as we'd originally believed.""

I blinked.

"What?""

"The doctor said there was still a possibility.""

I remembered that day.

I'd been sitting on the examination table with a paper sheet crinkling beneath me.

The doctor had spoken carefully.

He'd said there were some encouraging signs.

He'd suggested further testing.

I had been crying with relief.

Ethan had barely spoken on the drive home.

When I asked him what the doctor meant, he told me there was no point getting my hopes up.

He said the report was disappointing.

He said we needed to accept reality.

And then, three weeks later, he left.

I looked at him.

"You told me there was no hope.""

His voice was barely audible.

"I was scared.""

"Of what?""

He didn't answer.

Brooke rolled her eyes.

"Claire, you're making this sound much more dramatic than it was.""

I turned toward her.

"Stay out of this.""

She laughed.

"You really think he was going to spend his life waiting for you to figure out how to get pregnant?""

The words hit hard.

But this time, I didn't look away.

"Interesting," I said.

Brooke frowned.

"What?""

"You're defending a decision you claim had nothing to do with you.""

Her cheeks flushed.

Ethan grabbed her wrist.

"Brooke. Enough.""

She pulled free.

"Don't touch me.""

I looked at the two of them.

Something was wrong.

Not just with the report.

With the way they spoke.

With the way Brooke seemed to know details Ethan had never shared with me.

With the sudden panic in his eyes.

I turned toward my mother.

"Mom, do you still have the papers from the hospital?""

She nodded.

"Every single one.""

Ethan looked up.

"Why?""

"Because I kept them," I said.

"Claire, you don't need to do this.""

I gave him a cold smile.

"You've had six years to tell me the truth. You don't get to decide when I'm allowed to hear it.""

Lily tugged my hand.

"Mummy, can we go home now?""

I immediately crouched.

"Yes, baby.""

She looked past me at Ethan.

"Is he coming?""

I glanced at him.

"No, sweetheart.""

"Why not?""

I brushed a curl away from her forehead.

"Because grown-ups have some things to work out.""

Leo looked up.

"Can we get pancakes tomorrow?""

A small smile broke through my tears.

"Absolutely.""

"With strawberries?""

"And strawberries.""

He grinned.

"Then it's okay.""

I kissed both their foreheads.

When I stood, Ethan was watching us.

His expression was different now.

He wasn't looking at me with anger.

He was looking at me with something that resembled regret.

"Claire," he said, "please let me see them again.""

I held his gaze.

"That's not a decision you get to make tonight.""

"I know they're my children.""

"Do you?""

He flinched.

I continued.

"You didn't know their names. You didn't know their birthdays. You didn't know that Leo was allergic to peanuts until he was three. You didn't know Lily needed surgery when she was four.""

Ethan's face went white.

"She had surgery?""

I nodded.

"She was born with a condition that required treatment.""

"What happened?""

"She's fine now.""

He looked devastated.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

I stared at him.

"I tried.""

Silence.

Then I walked away.

The drive home was quiet.

Lily fell asleep with her head against my shoulder.

Leo sat beside my mother, holding a small toy dinosaur.

I watched the city lights slide across the window.

My mother finally spoke.

"That woman knew too much.""

I looked at her.

"Brooke?""

"Yes.""

"I noticed.""

"She knew about the report. She knew where Ethan kept it. She knew the doctor had found something.""

I stared out the window.

"Maybe he told her everything.""

"Maybe.""

My mother paused.

"But I don't believe her timing was accidental.""

I looked down at Lily.

Her tiny fingers were curled around the fabric of my dress.

"Mom, do you remember when I told you Ethan's assistant wouldn't let me speak to him?""

"Of course.""

"Her name was Natalie.""

My mother nodded.

"She sounded very nervous on the phone.""

"She told me Ethan had instructed her not to transfer my calls.""

"Yes.""

I swallowed.

"What if she was lying?""

My mother looked at me.

"What are you thinking?""

"I don't know.""

I leaned my head against the window.

"But I want that medical report.""

The next morning, I sat at my kitchen table with a mug of untouched coffee.

My children were in the living room, arguing about which cartoon to watch.

My mother had left early to collect groceries.

The house was warm and quiet.

I opened an old storage box.

Inside were photographs, hospital bills, divorce documents, and the few letters I had written to Ethan after he left.

I found the folder marked FERTILITY TREATMENT.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

The first few pages were familiar.

Blood tests.

Ultrasound reports.

Medication schedules.

Then I found the appointment summary from the final consultation.

I read it once.

Then again.

My eyes stopped on a handwritten note.

Patient shows improved ovarian function. Natural conception remains possible. Further investigation recommended for both partners.

I stared at the page.

Both partners.

I remembered the doctor asking Ethan to provide another sample.

I remembered him refusing.

I remembered him saying the appointment was pointless.

I turned the page.

There was a separate document.

A laboratory report.

But the name at the top wasn't mine.

It was Ethan's.

I frowned.

I had never seen that page before.

The report contained a series of medical terms I didn't fully understand, but one sentence stood out.

Follow-up evaluation recommended due to significantly reduced fertility indicators.

My mouth went dry.

I read it again.

Then I looked at the date.

It was the same date as our final fertility appointment.

Ethan had told me the doctor found nothing wrong with him.

He had told me the problem was mine.

He had told me he couldn't keep waiting because I couldn't give him a child.

But the document in my hands suggested something very different.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice sounded hesitant.

"Claire Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Natalie Brooks. I used to work for Ethan.""

I sat straighter.

"Natalie?""

"Yes. I know this is unexpected.""

I looked toward the living room.

"How did you get my number?""

"Your mother gave it to me.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course she had.

"What do you want?""

Natalie took a shaky breath.

"I saw what happened at the hotel last night.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Everyone saw.""

"I know. But I think you need to hear something.""

"What?""

A pause.

Then she said, "I was the person who intercepted your calls six years ago.""

My heart began pounding.

"Why?""

"Because Ethan told me to.""

I swallowed.

"That's what I thought.""

"No, Claire. You don't understand.""

Her voice cracked.

"He didn't just tell me not to transfer your calls. He told me to delete every message you left.""

I stared at the medical report.

"Why?""

"I asked him that same question.""

"And?""

Natalie went quiet.

Then she whispered:

"Because Brooke was already involved.""

I stood so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor.

"What?""

"Brooke was working with Ethan's family business at the time. She had access to his office. She was the one who brought me the instructions.""

My throat tightened.

"Brooke wasn't married to him then.""

"No. But she wanted to be.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"You're saying she knew I was pregnant?""

"I don't know if she knew that immediately.""

"Then what does she know?""

Natalie took another breath.

"Claire, there's something else. Before Ethan filed for divorce, he asked me to prepare a document. It was supposed to be a statement about your medical condition.""

I looked at the laboratory report.

"What kind of statement?""

"One saying that you had been advised against pregnancy.""

My blood ran cold.

"That isn't true.""

"I know.""

"Did you prepare it?""

"I did what I was told.""

I felt sick.

"Why are you telling me this now?""

"Because I saw those children last night. And because I kept a copy.""

"A copy of what?""

"The document Ethan asked me to prepare.""

I closed my eyes.

"Where is it?""

"In my old files. I never deleted it.""

I heard her take a shaky breath.

"But Claire, that's not the worst part.""

My stomach tightened.

"What could possibly be worse?""

Natalie lowered her voice.

"The statement wasn't created just to justify the divorce.""

I waited.

"It was used to change something in your medical records.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I whispered, "What?""

"I don't know exactly how it happened. But someone submitted a false report under your name.""

My hands went numb.

"Who?""

Natalie hesitated.

Then she said:

"Claire, the person who authorized the change wasn't Ethan.""

A cold silence settled over the kitchen.

"Then who was it?""

Natalie's answer made my blood run colder than anything Brooke had said the night before.

"Your mother-in-law, Eleanor Cole.""

May you like

And before I could ask another question, Natalie added:

"There's a reason she never wanted Ethan to find out those twins were born.""
