Chapter 8: The Guard Who Knew Her Name

*09:59.*
The red numbers appeared on the wall.
Emily stared at them.
"What's happening?""
Thomas rushed toward the door.
"Somebody has activated the security lockdown.""
James pulled at the handle.
It didn't move.
Helen pushed Margaret's wheelchair away from the wall.
"Can we get out?""
Thomas examined the control panel.
"Not until the system releases the lock.""
Emily looked at the countdown.
"How long?""
"Ten minutes.""
"And then?""
Thomas didn't answer.
James turned toward him.
"Tell her.""
Thomas swallowed.
"The room was designed to protect the documents. If someone activates the emergency protocol, the ventilation system shuts down and the storage chamber seals completely.""
Emily stared.
"You're saying we'll suffocate?""
"Not immediately. But we need to get out before the timer reaches zero.""
James struck the metal door with his fist.
"Daniel!""
A laugh came through the speaker.
"Hello, Mr. Whitmore.""
James stepped toward the control panel.
"Open the door.""
"Sorry, sir. I'm afraid I can't do that.""
"Daniel, listen to me. Whatever they promised you, I'll pay twice as much.""
The voice chuckled.
"Money. That's all you ever understand.""
Emily recognized it.
It was the same guard who had thrown her onto the marble floor.
The same man who had told her she didn't belong in the mansion.
Now she understood why he had watched the tattoo so carefully.
He had known exactly what it meant.
"Daniel," she called toward the speaker.
The laughter stopped.
"Emily Carter.""
"Why are you doing this?""
"Because your mother made a terrible mistake.""
"Where is she?""
A pause.
"Still asking questions. Just like Anna.""
Emily moved closer to the speaker.
"You know where she is.""
"Maybe.""
"Is she alive?""
"That depends on what happens in the next ten minutes.""
James slammed his fist against the wall.
"If you've touched Anna, I'll destroy you.""
Daniel laughed.
"Your father said exactly the same thing.""
James went pale.
Thomas looked toward the speaker.
"Who are you working for?""
"Someone who understands the value of the Falcon Trust.""
Emily glanced at the documents.
"What do you want?""
"The original seal. The documents. And the recording.""
James looked at the black case.
"You'll never get them.""
Daniel's voice became cold.
"Then you'll all die in there.""
The speaker clicked off.
Emily looked at the countdown.
*08:41.*
Thomas began searching the control panel.
"There has to be an emergency release.""
James examined the hinges.
Helen checked the walls.
Margaret watched Emily.
Then the old woman began signing.
Emily turned.
The second door.
"What second door?""
Margaret pointed toward the filing cabinets.
Emily moved the nearest cabinet.
Behind it was a narrow metal panel.
A small inscription appeared:
Only the bird knows the way home.
Emily touched her tattoo to the panel.
Nothing happened.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
Thomas examined the surface.
"There's another sensor.""
James looked toward the inscription.
"The system needs the second half of the seal.""
Emily remembered the document.
Michael had designed the system.
The person who possessed the second half must never return.
She looked at Thomas.
"Where is my father?""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"I don't know.""
"You told me he was alive three weeks ago.""
"I told you I saw him.""
"Then where?""
Thomas reached into his coat and removed a folded piece of paper.
"I was supposed to give this to you if we reached the chamber.""
Emily opened it.
A handwritten message appeared.
Emily, the second half of the seal is not an object. It is a memory.
She frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Thomas looked at Margaret.
The old woman began signing.
Slowly.
Your mother sang to you.
Emily blinked.
"What?""
Margaret repeated the gesture.
She sang a song. Every night.
Emily felt a strange memory stirring.
A melody.
A woman's voice.
A soft humming that had appeared in her dreams since childhood.
She had always assumed it came from her adoptive mother.
But now she wasn't sure.
Margaret signed again.
The falcon has two wings. One is yours. One belongs to the song.
Emily closed her eyes.
The melody came back.
Four notes.
A pause.
Three more.
Then a descending sequence.
She hummed it softly.
The panel made a faint sound.
A small green light appeared.
Thomas stepped forward.
"Again.""
Emily repeated the melody.
The light turned blue.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside lay a small silver disc.
James stared.
"The second seal.""
Emily picked it up.
It had a tiny falcon engraved on one side.
She placed it against the panel.
The metal door clicked.
The countdown stopped.
<badge color="success">LOCKDOWN RELEASED</badge>
But the main door remained closed.
Thomas pressed the emergency release.
Nothing happened.
He frowned.
"That's not right.""
Then the speaker came alive again.
Daniel's voice sounded different.
Angrier.
"Where did you get that?""
Emily looked up.
"Why? Is it yours?""
"Put it down.""
"Come and get it.""
James turned toward her.
"Emily, don't provoke him.""
But she understood something.
Daniel wasn't merely trying to steal the documents.
He was afraid of the silver disc.
And perhaps he knew more about her father than he wanted them to discover.
Emily held it closer to the speaker.
"Tell me where Michael is.""
Daniel went silent.
Then he said something unexpected.
"Your father gave me that disc.""
Emily froze.
"What?""
"He gave it to me before he disappeared.""
Thomas stepped forward.
"You're lying.""
"Am I?""
James grabbed the speaker.
"Where is he?""
Daniel laughed.
"Ask your mother.""
The speaker went dead.
Emily turned toward Margaret.
The old woman had gone completely still.
Her fingers were trembling.
Emily knelt.
"Grandma?""
Margaret looked at her.
Then she signed:
Michael came here.
"When?""
Last night.
Emily's heart pounded.
"Was he with my mother?""
Margaret shook her head.
Alone.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Margaret's hands moved slowly.
He said James must not know.
James stared.
"Mother, what are you saying?""
Margaret pointed toward a photograph on the desk.
It showed Michael standing outside the chapel.
The date on the photograph was yesterday.
James took it.
His face drained of color.
"That's impossible.""
Thomas leaned closer.
"Look at the background.""
Emily examined the image.
Behind Michael was the chapel's stained-glass window.
But something else caught her eye.
A reflection in the glass.
A woman standing behind him.
Anna.
Emily's breath caught.
"She was here.""
Thomas nodded.
"Yes.""
Emily turned toward James.
"Then where did they go?""
James looked at the photograph again.
On the back was a handwritten address.
He read it aloud.
"Blackwater House. Maine.""
Thomas stepped back.
"No.""
Emily looked at him.
"What?""
Thomas's face was filled with dread.
"That's where Anna and Michael were supposed to meet twenty-four years ago.""
James folded the photograph.
"Then that's where we're going.""
Emily looked at the documents.
"We need to take these.""
Thomas began placing them inside the black case.
But as he reached for the final folder, a small piece of paper slipped onto the floor.
Emily picked it up.
It was a recent visitor's log.
There were three names.
Margaret Whitmore.
James Whitmore.
And a third name written in red ink.
*DANIEL REED.*
Emily looked at Thomas.
"Reed?""
Thomas stared at the name.
Then he slowly shook his head.
"Daniel isn't just a security guard.""
James looked up.
"What is he?""
Thomas swallowed.
"He's my son.""
Emily felt the room tilt.
"Your son?""
Thomas nodded.
"Daniel was born after I disappeared. He never knew the truth about his family.""
"But he works for the person hunting us.""
Thomas looked at the closed door.
"Yes.""
A metallic click sounded from the hallway.
Then the door opened.
Daniel stood outside.
His security uniform was stained with blood.
He held a gun.
Behind him stood another man.
A man Emily recognized from the photograph beside Michael.
Thomas whispered:
"Michael.""
Emily's heart stopped.
The man stepped into the room.
He looked older.
Thinner.
But his eyes were exactly like hers.
"Hello, Emily.""
She couldn't speak.
Michael looked toward the black case.
Then toward Margaret.
Finally, he looked at James.
"Did you tell her what you did?""
James stood frozen.
Michael's voice hardened.
"Did you tell her that you were the one who gave Richard our location?""
Emily turned toward James.
Before he could answer, Michael raised his hand.
"Because there's something else you need to know.""
He looked directly at Emily.
"Your mother wasn't the only one who disappeared that night.""
May you like
He paused.
"Your grandfather had another child.""
