Chapter 6: The Mother Who Never Came Home

Emily couldn't stop staring at the photograph.

The seaside house looked ordinary.

White wooden walls.

Blue shutters.

A narrow porch overlooking the ocean.

There was a small flowerpot beside the front door.

It looked like the kind of place where someone could live quietly for decades without attracting attention.

But someone had painted a black falcon across its entrance.

Someone wanted the world to know that Anna Whitmore had been found.

"Where is my mother?"" Emily asked.

Thomas Reed removed his coat.

"I don't know.""

Emily looked at him.

"You said she was alive.""

"She was when I last saw her.""

"When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

"Then why did you bring me a photograph of a house surrounded by police?""

Thomas's jaw tightened.

"Because I needed you to understand that the danger is real.""

James stepped forward.

"You should never have come here.""

Thomas looked at him.

"And you should never have let your father bury the truth.""

James clenched his fists.

"Don't talk about my father.""

"Why? Because he's dead?""

"Because you don't know what he did for this family.""

Thomas laughed bitterly.

"I know exactly what he did.""

Margaret suddenly began signing.

Her hands moved rapidly.

Emily watched.

Ask him about the night at the hospital.

Emily turned.

"What happened at the hospital?""

Thomas lowered his eyes.

James looked sharply at Margaret.

"Mother, stop.""

But she continued.

He carried you out.

Emily stared at Thomas.

"You carried me out of the hospital?""

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because Anna was afraid someone would take you.""

Emily felt tears gathering.

"Who?""

Thomas looked toward James.

"Your grandfather.""

James stepped forward.

"That isn't what happened.""

Thomas opened the leather bag again.

He removed a small notebook with a cracked brown cover.

"Your father ordered the hospital to release Emily into the custody of a private family representative. Anna found out two hours before it happened.""

Emily's stomach tightened.

"Was I going to be taken away?""

"Yes.""

"Where?""

"To a private residence in Connecticut. Your grandfather intended to raise you under his supervision.""

Emily stared.

"Without my mother?""

"Without anyone who could challenge him.""

Thomas opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten dates, names, and amounts of money.

Emily recognized one name.

Richard Whitmore.

Another name appeared beside it.

James Whitmore.

She looked up.

"You were involved?""

James's face hardened.

"I was twenty-one. My father controlled the entire family. I had no power.""

Thomas pointed at the notebook.

"You had enough power to sign the transfer order.""

Emily looked at James.

"Did you?""

James didn't answer.

"Did you sign it?""

He finally spoke.

"Yes.""

Margaret began crying.

James looked at his mother.

"But I didn't know what he planned to do.""

Thomas shook his head.

"Your father told you exactly what he wanted.""

James's voice rose.

"He said he wanted to protect the child!""

"He wanted to use her.""

The room fell silent.

Emily looked at the notebook.

"Use me for what?""

Thomas turned a page.

There was a photocopy of an old legal document.

At the top was the name of a private trust.

The Falcon Trust.

Emily recognized the title from the recording.

Thomas pointed to a paragraph.

"Your grandfather created this trust after discovering that Anna had uncovered his financial activities. He intended to transfer several company assets into it.""

"Why?""

"Because the assets could be seized if the foundation investigation became public.""

Emily frowned.

"What does that have to do with me?""

Thomas looked at her.

"Anna had discovered that the original trust documents had been altered. She found the genuine papers. The falcon mark was the authentication symbol used on every original document.""

Emily touched her wrist.

"The tattoo?""

"Your mother had it copied onto your skin when you were a baby.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed your grandfather would destroy the documents if he discovered where they were hidden. She wanted a permanent way to identify the person who could inherit the truth.""

Emily stared at him.

"You're saying I was given a tattoo so I could inherit evidence?""

Thomas shook his head.

"No. You were given that mark because your mother wanted you to have a choice. The trust was created to protect the money for children who needed it. She didn't want Richard to turn it into another weapon.""

James interrupted.

"That's not the whole story.""

Thomas turned.

"Then tell it.""

James walked toward the desk.

He opened the leather folder and removed a second document.

"Father didn't create the trust. Anna did.""

Thomas went silent.

Emily looked at the document.

James continued.

"She persuaded my father to sign the original agreement because she threatened to expose the foundation. But she added a clause that made her child the sole beneficiary.""

Emily stared.

"So the money belongs to me?""

"Not exactly.""

James placed the document beside the notebook.

"The trust contains shares, properties, and charitable assets. But the most important part is the original evidence. Your mother designed the trust so that nobody could access it without the falcon seal and the signature of two witnesses.""

"Who are they?""

James looked at Thomas.

"One is the person who helped Anna escape.""

Thomas nodded.

"And the other?""

James looked at Margaret.

"Your grandmother.""

Emily turned toward Margaret.

The old woman began signing.

I will sign.

James shook his head.

"Mother, you can barely hold a pen.""

Margaret looked at him with fierce determination.

Then she signed again.

I can still choose.

Emily felt something tighten in her chest.

For years, she had imagined the family she had never known.

She had pictured a mother who might have forgotten her.

A father who might have abandoned her.

A grandmother who might never have wanted her.

But Margaret was sitting in front of her, fighting through a damaged body to keep her hand.

Emily knelt beside her.

"Grandma, I don't need the money.""

Margaret touched her cheek.

Then she signed.

You deserve the truth.

Emily began crying.

Thomas closed the notebook.

"There's something else.""

James looked at him.

"What?""

Thomas reached into his bag and removed a small silver key.

"Anna gave me this before she disappeared.""

James stared.

"Where did you get that?""

"From the safe beneath the chapel.""

Emily looked between them.

"What chapel?""

Thomas glanced at Margaret.

"The old family chapel on the north side of the estate.""

Margaret's eyes widened.

She signed urgently.

No. Not there.

Thomas frowned.

"Margaret?""

She pointed toward the floor, then toward the chapel.

Your husband hid something else.

Emily looked at James.

"What?""

James shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Thomas studied him.

"Your father had a private room beneath the chapel. He kept records there.""

Emily looked at the silver key.

"Then we need to go.""

James immediately objected.

"Absolutely not.""

"Why?""

"Because the chapel is sealed.""

Thomas gave him a hard look.

"Since when?""

"Since Father died.""

Thomas's face changed.

"Who sealed it?""

James didn't answer.

Thomas stepped closer.

"James. Who sealed it?""

James looked down.

"I did.""

Emily stared at him.

"Why?""

"Because I found something in there.""

"What?""

James swallowed.

"A recording.""

"Of whom?""

"My father.""

Thomas's expression hardened.

"What did it say?""

James looked at Emily.

"That Anna wasn't the only person he had arranged to disappear.""

The room went silent.

Emily felt a chill run down her spine.

"Who else?""

James slowly opened the folder again.

He removed a photograph.

It showed a young man standing beside Anna.

He had dark hair and a gentle smile.

Emily recognized something immediately.

The shape of his eyes.

The curve of his jaw.

The photograph looked like a younger version of her.

"Who is that?"" she whispered.

Thomas looked at the picture.

"His name was Michael.""

"Who was he?""

James answered.

"Your father.""

Emily's world stopped.

She looked at the photograph again.

"Is he alive?""

James shook his head.

"No one knows.""

Thomas's face tightened.

"That's not true.""

James turned toward him.

"What?""

Thomas looked at Emily.

"Michael was alive the last time I saw him.""

Emily grabbed the edge of the desk.

"When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

The same time Thomas had last seen Anna.

Emily's voice broke.

"Where are they?""

Thomas shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"Did they disappear together?""

"Possibly.""

James looked furious.

"You knew this and didn't tell me?""

Thomas's expression became cold.

"Because you were the last person Anna trusted.""

Emily turned toward James.

"Why?""

James looked away.

"Because I made a mistake.""

"What mistake?""

He remained silent.

Margaret suddenly began signing.

Emily watched her hands.

He gave your father the address.

Emily's blood ran cold.

"James?""

He closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

"Which address?""

"The place where Anna was supposed to meet Michael.""

Thomas stepped forward.

"Your father was waiting there.""

James looked at him.

"I didn't know.""

"You gave him the address.""

"I thought he wanted to help.""

Thomas slammed his hand against the desk.

"And because of you, Anna disappeared.""

James didn't defend himself.

For the first time, Emily saw something beyond arrogance in his expression.

Shame.

Deep, unbearable shame.

Emily stepped closer.

"Did my father die because of you?""

James looked at her.

"I don't know.""

"Did my mother?""

"I don't know.""

"Then why should I trust you?""

James had no answer.

Emily picked up the photograph of Michael.

She looked at the man's face for a long time.

Then she turned toward Thomas.

"Take me to the chapel.""

James stepped into her path.

"No.""

Emily stared at him.

"You don't get to decide what happens to me anymore.""

"Emily, listen.""

"No. You have had twenty-four years to explain. You chose silence.""

She moved past him.

Thomas picked up the silver key.

Helen followed with Margaret's wheelchair.

James remained beside the desk.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Emily standing beside Thomas in the hallway.

The photograph had been taken only seconds earlier.

Beneath it was a message.

*IF SHE OPENS THE CHAPEL, HER MOTHER DIES.*

James looked up.

At the far end of the hallway, Emily was already walking away.

He ran after her.

"EMILY! STOP!""

But before he could reach her, the estate's security alarm began screaming.

May you like

Every light in the mansion went dark.

And somewhere beneath the old chapel, a heavy metal door began to open.
