Chapter 9: The Truth She Tried To Hide

Victoria was arrested two days later.

But the arrest wasn’t the ending.

It was only the beginning.

Because everyone wanted to know one thing.

Did she kill my mother?

The question followed me everywhere.

At school.

Online.

In whispered conversations.

People who barely knew me suddenly knew my entire life.

The girl whose stepmother slapped her.

The girl whose inheritance was hidden.

The girl whose mother’s death was reopened.

But the hardest part wasn’t the attention.

It was realizing my childhood memories had been built on lies.

My father spent every day trying to fix what he could.

But some things couldn’t be repaired.

One evening, he found me sitting on the porch.

The same porch where my mother used to watch me ride my bike.

“Can I sit with you?””

I nodded.

He sat beside me.

For a while, we watched the sunset.

Then he said:

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

Simple.

But heavy.

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For believing the wrong person.””

I looked away.

“That’s not all.””

He swallowed.

“For not seeing what was happening to you.””

The truth was, I had wanted him to say that for years.

But hearing it now didn’t erase the pain.

“I needed you.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

“No, Dad.””

I looked at him.

“I needed you before everything became a disaster.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

That was the difference.

He wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t making excuses.

He was finally listening.

A week later, the detective called us again.

They had found more evidence.

This time, Daniel was there too.

We sat in a conference room while Detective Harris placed files on the table.

“Victoria admitted she contacted Mark about the financial issues.””

My father nodded.

“What about the accident?””

The detective opened a folder.

“Victoria claims she never intended for Sarah to die.””

I looked down.

“Do you believe her?””

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

“That’s complicated.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she may not have caused the crash directly.””

Everyone became silent.

My father frowned.

“Then who did?””

Detective Harris looked at the documents.

“Mark.””

My stomach dropped.

“But Victoria’s fingerprint was on the vehicle.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

The detective turned a page.

“She touched the car the night before.””

My father looked confused.

“Why?””

The detective looked at me.

“Because she was trying to find something.””

“What?””

“The evidence Sarah had collected.””

My blood ran cold.

“She searched my mother’s car?””

“Yes.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Did she find it?””

Detective Harris shook his head.

“No.””

“Then where is it?””

The detective reached into the folder.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“This was found hidden inside Sarah’s old jewelry box.””

My father stared.

“That box was in storage.””

“Yes.””

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My mother’s.

Emily.

My fingers shook as I opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence was written.

The person who betrays you will always try to make you question yourself first.

Below it was a name.

A name I never expected.

Not Victoria.

Not Mark.

Someone else.

Someone who had been around my family the entire time.

I looked at my father.

“Dad…”

He saw the name.

And his face changed.

“No.””

The room went silent.

“Impossible.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“You know this person?””

My father slowly nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who is it?””

My father stared at the paper.

Then whispered:

“Someone who was at the accident scene.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

And the fear in his eyes told me everything.

Because the person my mother warned us about…

Was someone we never suspected.

Someone who had been pretending to help us.

Someone who had been close enough to hear every secret.

Someone who knew exactly how to destroy our family.

May you like

And their name was written in my mother’s final message.

*Lily Carter.*
