Chapter 3: The Document She Never Wanted Me To Find
I read the document three times before I understood what I was seeing.
My name was written at the top.
Emily Rose Carter.
Below it were words that made my heart race.
A trust agreement.
Money that my mother had left for me.
A future fund.
A safety net.
Something my mother had created before she died.
I looked at Lily.
“Why didn’t I know about this?””
She looked miserable.
“Because Mom hid it.””
My hands tightened around the paper.
“How do you know?””
“Because I found it last week.””
“Where?””
“In her office.””
I stared at her.
“You went through her things?””
“I was looking for my birth certificate.””
She paused.
“Then I found a folder with your name.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Victoria had known.
For years.
My mother had left something for me, and Victoria had hidden it.
The next morning, I confronted her.
I waited until Dad left for work.
Victoria was making coffee when I placed the document on the kitchen counter.
The moment she saw it, the color drained from her face.
“Where did you get that?””
Not “What is that?””
Not “Why are you accusing me?””
The first thing she asked was where I found it.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
“You knew.””
She slowly put down her coffee mug.
“Emily…”
“You knew my mother left this for me.””
Her jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked away.
“I was protecting you.””
I almost laughed.
“Protecting me?””
“Yes.””
“By hiding my mother’s last gift?””
“You were sixteen. You were emotional. You weren’t ready.””
“You mean you weren’t ready.””
Her silence answered.
Victoria stepped closer.
“You have no idea what your mother was like.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“She made decisions without thinking about the consequences.””
“That’s my mother you’re talking about.””
“And I’m the one who raised you.””
There it was again.
The debt.
The reminder.
Everything she had done.
Everything she wanted me to owe her.
“You didn’t raise me because you loved me,” I whispered.
Her expression hardened.
“You should be grateful.””
“Grateful for what?””
“For everything.””
I shook my head.
“No. You wanted control.””
For the first time, Victoria looked angry enough to stop pretending.
“You think you’re so smart.””
“No.””
I held up the document.
“I think I finally know the truth.””
She grabbed the paper.
But before she could tear it, Lily walked into the kitchen.
“Mom.””
Victoria froze.
Lily stood there holding her phone.
“What are you doing?””
Victoria’s face changed.
“Go upstairs.””
“No.””
The word shocked both of us.
Lily had never spoken to her mother like that.
“No,” Lily repeated.
“I’m done lying for you.””
Victoria stared at her daughter.
“You have no idea what you’re saying.””
“I do.””
Lily held up her phone.
“I recorded everything.””
My heart stopped.
Victoria’s eyes widened.
“You wouldn’t.””
“I already did.””
The kitchen became completely silent.
Lily looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Emily.””
Then she turned to her mother.
“You made me blame her. You made me lie. You made me think if I didn’t obey you, you wouldn’t love me.””
Victoria’s face went pale.
“Lily, don’t do this.””
“No. You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
I had never seen Lily look that brave.
Not once.
Victoria reached for the phone.
But Lily stepped back.
“I sent the recording to Dad.””
A second later, the front door opened.
My father’s voice came from the hallway.
“Lily?””
Everyone froze.
He walked into the kitchen.
His eyes moved from Victoria.
To Lily.
To me.
Then he saw the document on the counter.
“What is happening?””
Nobody answered.
So Lily did.
“Dad, Mom lied to Emily.””
Victoria immediately interrupted.
“Don’t listen to her.””
But Dad looked at Lily.
“About what?””
Lily took a deep breath.
“About the tablet.””
A pause.
“About the money Emily’s mom left.””
Another pause.
“And about a lot of other things.””
My father looked at Victoria.
For the first time, I saw doubt on his face.
Real doubt.
Victoria opened her mouth.
But before she could speak, Dad’s phone rang.
He looked down.
His expression changed.
“Who is calling you?”” Victoria asked nervously.
He didn’t answer.
He just stared at the screen.
Then he looked at me.
“Emily…”
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
He turned the phone around.
The caller’s name was displayed.
A name I had never seen before.
But Victoria recognized it instantly.
Because the moment she saw it, she whispered:
“No…”
My father answered.
May you like
And the voice on the other end said something that changed our entire family forever.
“Mr. Carter, we need to talk about what your wife did before your daughter’s mother died.””
