Chapter 5: The Woman Who Buried the Truth

The council chamber doors were locked.
Two royal guards stood outside, their hands resting on their ceremonial swords.
Inside, King Gabriel sat at the head of a long oak table.
Queen Madeleine stood beside the fireplace.
Three senior ministers were present, along with the royal physician, Dr. Samuel Hart.
But the woman seated opposite the king was the one who made Sophie stop breathing.
She looked to be in her late fifties.
Her dark hair was streaked with silver. She wore a simple black coat, a pearl necklace, and leather gloves.
Her face was familiar.
Not because Sophie had seen it in a photograph.
Because she had seen it every morning for most of her life.
"Mother?""
The woman turned.
Her eyes filled instantly.
"Sophie.""
Sophie rushed forward.
But before she could embrace her, the woman stood and stepped backward.
"Don't.""
Sophie stopped.
"Why?""
The woman looked at the others.
"Because there are things you need to hear before you touch me again.""
Madeleine approached slowly.
"Elizabeth?""
The woman shook her head.
"My name is Eleanor Vale.""
Sophie stared.
"Mrs. Eleanor?""
The housekeeper nodded.
The same woman who had trained her, corrected her, and sent her to clean the ballroom that evening.
The same woman who had warned her never to touch the crystal.
"You're my mother?""
Eleanor's lips trembled.
"Yes.""
Sophie took another step.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I promised I would keep you safe.""
"By lying to me?""
Eleanor looked down.
"I had no other choice.""
Gabriel slammed his palm against the table.
"Enough sentimental nonsense. Tell them what you told me.""
Eleanor turned toward him.
"No.""
The king rose.
"You came here because you wanted to reveal the truth.""
"I came because I want the truth to end.""
"Then speak.""
Eleanor removed her gloves.
There was a faint scar across her right palm.
Sophie recognized it.
She had seen that scar countless times when her mother prepared dinner, stitched clothes, or brushed Sophie's hair.
Eleanor touched it.
"Twenty-four years ago, I was a royal nurse. I was assigned to Princess Madeleine's nursery.""
Madeleine stared at her.
"You were there the night my daughter disappeared.""
"Yes.""
"Why did you let them take her?""
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
"Because I was ordered to.""
"By whom?""
Eleanor looked at Gabriel.
"By the king.""
Gabriel stood abruptly.
"Be careful.""
Eleanor ignored him.
"But there was something you were never told, Your Majesty.""
She turned toward Sophie.
"The child I carried out of the palace that night was not your daughter.""
Madeleine went completely still.
"What?""
Eleanor continued.
"The princess born in December 2002 was already dead.""
Sophie felt the floor shift.
"No.""
Eleanor reached into her coat and placed a small photograph on the table.
It showed two babies lying side by side in a hospital nursery.
One wore a white blanket.
The other wore green.
Written beneath the photograph were two names.
Alexandra.
And Sophie.
Madeleine picked it up.
Her hands shook.
"Two babies?""
Eleanor nodded.
"Princess Alexandra was born first. But she was weak. The doctors believed she would not survive the night.""
Sophie looked at the photograph.
"Then who was I?""
Eleanor swallowed.
"You were born three minutes after her.""
Silence.
Victor leaned against the table.
"How is that possible? There was only one pregnancy.""
Eleanor looked at him.
"There were twins.""
Madeleine shook her head.
"No. I would have known.""
"You were unconscious after the birth. The royal physician ordered the second child removed from the nursery.""
Dr. Hart lowered his eyes.
Sophie looked at him.
"You knew?""
The physician didn't answer.
Eleanor continued.
"Princess Alexandra died shortly after birth. But you survived. The king ordered the doctors to conceal the second birth because the succession laws did not permit a second heir without council approval.""
Madeleine covered her mouth.
"And you took Sophie?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Eleanor looked at Gabriel.
"Because he ordered me to make the second child disappear.""
The king stood.
"That's enough!""
Eleanor's voice rose.
"You ordered me to take a living child and tell the world she had died!""
Gabriel's face turned red.
"I was protecting the monarchy!""
"You were protecting yourself!""
The room erupted.
Victor grabbed the edge of the table.
"Father, did you really do this?""
Gabriel looked at his son.
"You have no idea what was at stake.""
Victor shook his head.
"Then tell me!""
The king's voice dropped.
"Your uncle Adrian had been preparing to challenge the throne. The birth of another royal heir would have divided the council. I had to prevent a civil war.""
Madeleine stepped forward.
"By stealing my baby?""
"By preserving the kingdom.""
Sophie stared at him.
"And my mother?""
Eleanor began crying.
"I raised you as my own. I changed your name. I left the palace and moved to a small village near the northern border.""
Sophie remembered the tiny cottage.
The leaking roof.
The wood stove.
Her mother's hands, always rough from work.
The way she had saved every penny for Sophie's education.
The way she used to sit beside her bed during thunderstorms.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Eleanor wiped her eyes.
"Because I knew the moment you discovered your bloodline, the king would come for you.""
Sophie looked at the pendant.
"But the crystal recognized me.""
Eleanor nodded.
"Because you are the last surviving child of the old royal line.""
Madeleine turned toward the physician.
"Is this true?""
Dr. Hart finally spoke.
"Yes, Your Majesty.""
Gabriel looked at him with fury.
"You will regret this.""
The physician removed his glasses.
"I have regretted it for twenty-four years.""
The room fell silent.
Then Eleanor placed another object on the table.
A small silver bracelet.
It had two emerald charms.
One was shaped like a crown.
The other was shaped like a star.
Sophie recognized it immediately.
Her mother had kept it inside a locked wooden box at home.
She had never been allowed to touch it.
Eleanor pushed it toward Sophie.
"Your sister wore the other half.""
Sophie stared.
"Alexandra?""
Eleanor nodded.
"She was your twin.""
Madeleine reached for the bracelet.
"Where is the other half?""
Eleanor hesitated.
"With the man who took Alexandra.""
Victor frowned.
"But you said she died.""
Eleanor looked at him.
"I said the princess died.""
She turned toward Sophie.
"That wasn't the whole truth.""
Sophie felt her pulse quicken.
"Explain.""
Eleanor drew a long breath.
"The baby who died was not Alexandra. It was another infant brought into the nursery that night.""
Madeleine staggered backward.
Gabriel slammed his hand against the table again.
"Stop talking!""
Eleanor continued.
"Alexandra was taken from the palace alive.""
Madeleine began to cry.
"Where is my daughter?""
Eleanor looked at Gabriel.
"Ask your husband.""
Every face turned toward the king.
Gabriel remained silent.
Victor approached him.
"Father?""
The king looked toward the window.
Then he spoke.
"Alexandra was sent away.""
"Where?""
"To Adrian.""
Madeleine looked horrified.
"You gave my daughter to him?""
"He was her father.""
"And you told me she was dead!""
"Because Adrian threatened to return and claim the throne through her.""
Sophie felt a cold wave pass through her.
"Then where is he now?""
Gabriel looked directly at her.
"Dead.""
Eleanor shook her head.
"No.""
The king's eyes narrowed.
Eleanor reached into her coat and removed a second envelope.
"This arrived yesterday.""
She placed it in front of Madeleine.
The handwriting on the front was familiar.
Madeleine opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A man stood beside a young woman in a dark coat.
He looked older, with silver hair and a scar above his eyebrow.
But Madeleine recognized him immediately.
"Adrian...""
Her fingers trembled.
On the back of the photograph was a short message.
The second daughter has awakened the crystal. Bring her to the chapel before the winter moon. The crown cannot remain with Gabriel.
Victor looked at the calendar on the wall.
"The winter moon?""
Dr. Hart answered quietly.
"Tomorrow night.""
Gabriel rose so quickly that his chair fell backward.
"Burn it.""
Madeleine stepped away.
"No.""
"Burn that photograph!""
Eleanor moved between them.
"You cannot hide him anymore.""
Gabriel looked at her with undisguised hatred.
"You have already done enough damage.""
Then he reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small black remote.
Victor frowned.
"What is that?""
Gabriel pressed a button.
Somewhere beneath the council chamber, heavy machinery began to move.
A metallic grinding sound traveled through the walls.
Eleanor turned pale.
"What have you done?""
Gabriel's expression was cold.
"I have sealed the lower archive.""
Sophie looked toward the floor.
A second sound followed.
The sound of a door locking.
Then every light in the chamber went out.
In the darkness, someone screamed.
And a hand grabbed Sophie's wrist.
May you like
A man's voice whispered beside her ear.
"Don't trust Eleanor. She's not the only one who changed your name.""
