Chapter 10: The Crown Belongs to the Daughters

"My daughters.""

The words echoed through the underground passage.

Sophie stood frozen.

The man before her looked exactly like the photograph Eleanor had shown them. Silver hair. Green eyes. A deep scar across his forehead.

But Sophie had spent twenty-four years believing her father was either dead or a stranger whose identity would never be revealed.

Now he was standing ten feet away.

Alive.

Isabella released her sister's hand.

"Father?""

Adrian's face crumpled.

"Isabella.""

He took one step forward, then stopped, as though afraid they might disappear if he moved too quickly.

Sophie stared at him.

"You're Adrian Vale?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"The man who was supposed to be dead?""

A sad smile crossed his face.

"I've been called worse.""

"Why did you let us believe you were dead?""

Adrian looked toward Eleanor.

"Because someone had to make Gabriel believe he had won.""

Eleanor lowered her eyes.

Sophie felt anger rising in her chest.

"Everyone keeps telling me they lied to protect me. Do you have any idea what that feels like?""

Adrian nodded.

"I do.""

"No, you don't. You had twenty-four years to find me.""

His eyes filled.

"I searched for you every day.""

"Then why didn't you come?""

"Because the first time I tried, Gabriel sent men to kill you. The second time, he threatened Eleanor. The third time, he made me believe Isabella had been murdered.""

Isabella approached him.

"Where were you?""

"In hiding. Waiting for the opportunity to bring the truth before the council.""

Adrian looked at the golden ring in Sophie's hand.

"Until tonight.""

A loud explosion shook the passage.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Victor appeared at the far end, supporting an injured King Edward.

"Stop talking! Gabriel has the guards moving toward the chapel!""

Adrian turned.

"Then we have no time.""

Sophie looked at her father.

"One question.""

He nodded.

"Ask anything.""

"Why did you never tell me my real name?""

Adrian's expression softened.

"Because Alexandra was the name Gabriel wanted to erase. Sophie was the name Eleanor gave you, and the name your mother wanted you to have.""

He paused.

"Your mother believed a person should be free to choose who she became.""

Sophie looked down at the royal seal.

For the first time, she understood that her two names did not have to compete.

Alexandra was her history.

Sophie was her life.

And neither could be taken from her.

"Let's finish this," she said.

The royal chapel was burning.

Flames climbed the ancient wooden pillars, sending thick smoke toward the painted ceiling.

At the center of the chapel stood King Gabriel.

He held the original parchment in one hand and a silver ceremonial dagger in the other.

Around him stood twelve armed soldiers.

On the altar lay a wooden box.

The real royal crown was inside.

Gabriel looked up as the doors opened.

His eyes immediately found Sophie.

"Finally.""

Madeleine stepped forward.

"Gabriel, this ends tonight.""

He laughed.

"You think a few pieces of paper will take my kingdom?""

King Edward entered behind Victor.

The old monarch leaned heavily on his grandson's shoulder.

"Your kingdom?"" he whispered.

Gabriel froze.

The parchment slipped slightly from his fingers.

"Father.""

Edward straightened.

"For twenty-three years, I have waited to hear you say that.""

Gabriel stared at him.

"I thought you were dead.""

"You made sure everyone else believed that.""

Edward looked around the burning chapel.

"Look what you've done to my kingdom.""

Gabriel raised his dagger.

"I did what was necessary.""

"To imprison your father?""

"To save the crown!""

Edward shook his head.

"The crown was never yours.""

Gabriel's expression twisted.

"Then whose was it?""

Edward pointed toward Sophie and Isabella.

"Their mother's blood. Their grandmother's blood. The blood you tried to erase.""

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

"Two girls raised by servants? You expect the council to kneel before them?""

Sophie stepped forward.

"No.""

Gabriel looked at her.

"No?""

"We don't need anyone to kneel.""

She placed the golden seal on the altar.

"We only need the truth.""

For a moment, the chapel was silent.

Then General Marcus entered with six royal guards.

He carried a leather document case.

"Your Majesty.""

Gabriel turned.

"General. Excellent. Arrest them.""

Marcus looked at the king.

Then he removed his sword.

And placed it on the floor.

"I can no longer serve you.""

Gabriel stared.

"After everything I've done for you?""

Marcus answered quietly.

"You taught me that loyalty meant obeying the crown. I finally understand that it means protecting the people beneath it.""

He opened the document case.

Inside were the original medical records, the signed order separating the twins, and a confession bearing Gabriel's signature.

Madeleine took the papers.

"These are authentic?""

Marcus nodded.

"I recovered them from the king's private study.""

Gabriel stepped backward.

"You stole state documents.""

"No, Your Majesty. I recovered evidence.""

Gabriel suddenly lunged toward the altar.

His dagger flashed.

Adrian moved first.

He caught Gabriel's arm, and the two men crashed against the wooden railing.

The dagger fell.

Victor rushed forward to help his father-in-law.

Gabriel struck Adrian across the face.

"You should have stayed dead!""

Adrian struggled to hold him.

"And you should never have touched my daughters!""

Gabriel broke free and grabbed the ceremonial dagger.

He turned toward Sophie.

Madeleine screamed.

"Sophie!""

But Isabella was faster.

She pulled her sister away as Gabriel swung.

The blade struck the altar.

A terrible cracking sound filled the chapel.

The wooden box split open.

The real crown rolled across the marble floor.

It stopped at Sophie's feet.

She bent down.

The silver crown was heavier than she expected.

Three emerald stones gleamed beneath the burning candles.

When she lifted it, the chapel's ancient bells began ringing.

One.

Two.

Three.

The sound traveled through the palace.

The crystal hand in the ballroom answered with a distant emerald flash.

Gabriel stared.

"No...""

The old king approached the altar.

"Read the inscription.""

Sophie turned the crown over.

There were words engraved inside.

Madeleine read them aloud.

"Two daughters. One bloodline. One kingdom. No crown shall divide them.""

Isabella stood beside her.

The emerald stones brightened.

Then the original parchment opened by itself.

A final line appeared beneath the royal seal.

The crown shall pass to the daughters of the first blood, and the throne shall be shared by their choice.

Gabriel's face collapsed.

He had spent twenty-three years protecting a crown that had never belonged to him.

And now the truth was standing before him.

"Arrest him.""

King Edward's command was quiet.

But every soldier heard it.

Two guards approached Gabriel.

He looked at Madeleine.

"You're going to let them do this?""

Madeleine stared at him.

"You stole my daughters.""

"I gave you a kingdom!""

"You gave me an empty nursery and twenty-four years of grief.""

He turned toward Victor.

"Son.""

Victor looked at him.

For a moment, the old bond between them seemed to return.

Gabriel reached out.

"Tell them who you are. Tell them you're my heir.""

Victor looked at the crown.

Then at Sophie and Isabella.

"I'm your son," he said quietly.

"But I will not inherit a throne built on a lie.""

Gabriel's expression hardened.

"You're choosing them over me?""

Victor shook his head.

"I'm choosing what is right.""

The guards seized Gabriel.

He struggled.

"You cannot do this! I am the king!""

Edward stepped forward.

"No, Gabriel. You were only the man sitting on the throne.""

The guards escorted him away.

As he passed Sophie, he stopped.

For a brief moment, his eyes met hers.

"You think you've won," he whispered.

Sophie said nothing.

Gabriel leaned closer.

"The crown destroys everyone who wears it.""

She looked at him calmly.

"Then perhaps it's time someone wore it differently.""

The guards took him through the chapel doors.

The sound of his footsteps faded.

And for the first time in twenty-three years, the palace belonged to the truth.

At sunrise, the royal council assembled in the great ballroom.

The same ballroom where Sophie had touched the crystal hand.

The same ballroom where Queen Madeleine had screamed, "What have you done?""

Now the room was filled with witnesses.

Ministers.

Generals.

Noble families.

Representatives from neighboring kingdoms.

At the center stood King Edward, supported by Victor.

Beside him stood Madeleine.

And in front of the crystal pedestal stood Sophie and Isabella.

Eleanor watched from the servants' entrance.

Her hands were clasped tightly together.

Adrian stood beside her.

The royal physician, Dr. Hart, had submitted a full confession to the council.

The original birth records had been verified.

The old succession treaty had been read aloud.

There was no longer any doubt.

Gabriel had ruled unlawfully.

The throne belonged to the twin daughters of Elizabeth and Adrian.

King Edward raised his hand.

"Let the kingdom hear the truth.""

A herald stepped forward.

"By the authority of the original royal succession treaty, Princess Alexandra Elizabeth Bellgrave and Princess Isabella Rose Bellgrave are recognized as the rightful heirs to the throne of Bellgrave.""

A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.

Sophie looked toward Isabella.

Her sister squeezed her hand.

The herald continued.

"The crown shall be offered to both princesses, who shall determine the future of the monarchy together.""

King Edward approached the crystal pedestal.

"Come forward, my granddaughters.""

Sophie and Isabella stepped toward him.

The crystal hand remained silent.

Edward smiled.

"Together.""

They placed their hands against the transparent stone.

Emerald light erupted.

The entire ballroom glowed.

The crystal fingers opened.

A hidden compartment appeared beneath the pedestal, revealing a second parchment.

This one was not ancient.

It was newly written.

Sophie looked at the inscription.

It contained the final words of her mother, Elizabeth.

My daughters,

If you have reached this moment together, then the people who tried to divide you have failed.

Do not let the crown become more important than the lives it is meant to protect.

One of you carries the strength to remember.

The other carries the courage to forgive.

Together, you carry the future.

Sophie covered her mouth.

Isabella began crying.

Madeleine embraced both daughters.

For the first time, the queen held her children together.

Not as memories.

Not as names on a royal document.

But as living daughters.

Her daughters.

Three months later, Bellgrave looked different.

The royal prison beneath the palace had been dismantled.

The secret archives were opened to historians.

The servants' quarters were renovated, and every palace employee received a fair contract, proper wages, and the right to speak freely without fear of punishment.

Dr. Hart publicly confessed his involvement in the conspiracy and surrendered his medical license.

General Marcus became commander of the reformed royal guard.

King Edward, too frail to resume ruling, retired from public life.

Gabriel was sentenced to imprisonment for kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and treason against the crown.

Victor remained at the palace, but he was no longer treated as the unquestioned heir.

Instead, he became the sisters' chief adviser.

He also apologized personally to every servant he had mistreated.

Some accepted.

Others did not.

He understood that forgiveness was not something he could demand.

As for Sophie, she returned to the northern village one last time.

Daniel was waiting outside their little house.

When he saw her carriage, he ran down the road.

"Sophie!""

She jumped out before the carriage stopped.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her.

"Where have you been?""

She laughed through her tears.

"Somewhere complicated.""

He looked at her clothes.

Then at the royal guards.

"Are you in trouble?""

Sophie smiled.

"No.""

She touched the small emerald pendant at her neck.

"I'm finally home.""

She told him everything that evening.

About the queen.

About Isabella.

About their father.

About the crown.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he leaned back in his chair.

"So you're a princess?""

Sophie laughed.

"Apparently.""

He considered that.

"Does that mean I have to call you Your Highness?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Good. Because I'm not doing that.""

They both laughed.

For the first time in months, Sophie felt something ordinary.

Something precious.

A family sitting around a small wooden table.

On the morning of the coronation, the palace bells rang across the capital.

Thousands gathered outside the royal gates.

Some came to witness history.

Others came because they wanted to see the two princesses who had returned from nowhere and challenged a king.

Inside the ballroom, Sophie stood before a mirror.

She wore an emerald gown, simple but elegant.

The silver crown rested on a velvet cushion.

Madeleine entered quietly.

"Are you ready?""

Sophie smiled nervously.

"Not really.""

The queen approached and adjusted the small silver pendant around her daughter's neck.

"You don't have to be ready for everything today.""

Sophie looked at her reflection.

"Do you think Mother would have been proud?""

Madeleine's eyes filled.

"Elizabeth would have been more than proud.""

She touched Sophie's cheek.

"She would have been here, standing beside you.""

Sophie nodded.

Then the door opened.

Isabella entered wearing a matching gown.

"Are you two planning to stay in here all morning?""

Madeleine laughed.

"We're coming.""

Isabella approached Sophie.

She held out her hand.

"Ready, sister?""

Sophie took it.

"Together.""

They walked into the ballroom.

The crowd rose.

King Edward sat on a golden chair beside the throne.

Adrian stood behind the sisters.

Eleanor watched from the front row, tears shining in her eyes.

The royal herald raised his staff.

"Presenting Her Royal Highness, Princess Alexandra Elizabeth Bellgrave, and Her Royal Highness, Princess Isabella Rose Bellgrave.""

The sisters stepped onto the platform.

Edward lifted the silver crown.

But before he could place it on their heads, Sophie stopped him.

"Grandfather?""

He looked at her.

"Yes, my dear?""

"Can we change the oath?""

A murmur passed through the room.

Edward smiled.

"What would you change?""

Sophie looked at Isabella.

Her sister nodded.

Sophie turned toward the assembled kingdom.

"We will not rule through fear. We will not hide the truth to protect our positions. And no child will ever again be taken from their family to preserve a crown.""

Isabella continued.

"We will share the responsibility of the throne, and we will answer to the people we serve.""

Edward's eyes filled.

"Then let it be so.""

He placed the silver crown between them.

The emerald stones illuminated the ballroom.

The crystal hand shone.

And the bells began ringing.

This time, nobody was afraid.

That evening, after the celebrations ended, Sophie returned to the ballroom alone.

The candles had burned low.

The orchestra had packed away its instruments.

She stood before the ancient crystal hand.

For a moment, she remembered the frightened maid who had touched it months earlier.

The girl who had believed her greatest problem was an angry housekeeper and an impatient prince.

She smiled.

"Well," she whispered, "that certainly wasn't what I expected.""

A soft voice answered behind her.

"Neither did I.""

Sophie turned.

It was Isabella.

Her sister approached, holding a small wooden box.

"I found this in Mother's old belongings.""

Sophie opened it.

Inside lay two tiny silver bracelets.

One was engraved with the name Alexandra.

The other with Isabella.

Beneath them was a final note.

My daughters, you were never born to fight for a throne. You were born to find each other.

Sophie read it twice.

Then she looked at her sister.

"Do you think we'll ever understand everything that happened?""

Isabella smiled.

"Probably not.""

She took Sophie's hand.

"But we don't have to understand every lie to know the truth now.""

Together, they placed the bracelets inside the hidden drawer of the crystal pedestal.

The emerald light flickered once.

Then settled.

Outside, the kingdom celebrated beneath a sky full of stars.

And for the first time in twenty-four years, the royal ballroom held no secrets.

The maid who had once been ordered to polish the crystal had become one of the two queens it had been waiting for.

But Sophie never forgot the lesson hidden inside that ancient parchment:

May you like

*A crown can be stolen. A throne can be taken. But the truth always remembers the blood it belongs to.*

And sometimes, the most powerful person in a kingdom is the one everyone once believed was nobody.
