Chapter 6: The Sister Who Stole a Life

For a long moment, Marcus couldn't understand the words.

The woman standing before him wore Vanessa's face, spoke with Vanessa's voice, and had spent fourteen months building a life under Vanessa's name.

Yet she was telling him she wasn't Vanessa.

Evelyn looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath her.

"No," she whispered.

"No, that can't be.""

The woman in the wedding gown shook her head.

"I'm sorry.""

Evelyn stepped closer.

"Look at me.""

The bride raised her eyes.

Evelyn studied her face, searching for something only a mother could recognize.

Then she reached out and touched the crescent-shaped mark beneath the woman's left eye.

Her hand began to tremble.

"Victoria?""

The woman burst into tears.

"Mom.""

Evelyn made a sound somewhere between a sob and a gasp.

She pulled her daughter into her arms.

For several seconds, the two women clung to each other in the dim hallway while Marcus stood motionless, trying to absorb the truth.

The bride was Victoria.

The woman in the photograph.

The mother of his daughter.

The woman who had been declared dead before he ever met her.

And somewhere in the world, Vanessa Reed was still alive.

Marcus stepped toward them.

"Victoria?""

She nodded against Evelyn's shoulder.

He struggled to speak.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Victoria drew back, wiping her face.

"Because I didn't remember who I was.""

"How is that possible?""

Richard answered before she could.

"The fire.""

Marcus turned toward him.

"Don't speak for her.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

Victoria took a shaky breath.

"When I woke up in the hospital after the fire, I couldn't remember my name. I didn't know where I was. I didn't know why my face was covered in bandages.""

She touched the side of her head.

"The doctors said the injuries and the trauma had caused severe memory loss. Someone had switched our identification bracelets, and everyone believed I was Vanessa.""

Evelyn pressed a hand to her chest.

"I thought I had lost you.""

Victoria reached for her mother's hand.

"I know.""

Marcus stared at her.

"But if everyone thought you were Vanessa, where was the real Vanessa?""

Victoria's expression darkened.

"With Richard.""

The older man said nothing.

Victoria continued.

"Vanessa had escaped the fire before the firefighters arrived. She was found wandering several streets away, terrified and covered in soot. Richard found her at the hospital before anyone realized the identification bracelets had been switched.""

"Why would he help her?""

"Because she had something he needed.""

Richard sighed.

"You're making this sound more sinister than it was.""

Victoria turned toward him.

"You told a nine-year-old girl that her mother had abandoned her. You told her that her sister was dead. Then you gave her a new name and told her to forget everything.""

"I gave her a future.""

"You gave her a lie.""

Richard's expression hardened.

"She agreed to it.""

"She was a child!""

"And you were unconscious.""

Victoria flinched.

Marcus looked at Richard.

"Explain.""

Richard slowly descended the last few stairs.

"Your grandfather was a ruthless man. He had a relationship with Evelyn years before he married my mother. When Evelyn became pregnant, he arranged for the baby to be taken away.""

Evelyn shook her head.

"He told me my son was dead.""

"He wanted to protect his reputation," Richard said.

"He was married to a wealthy socialite, and Evelyn was a woman he had no intention of marrying. When she gave birth, he arranged for the child to be transferred to another family.""

Marcus's voice was cold.

"And that child was me.""

"Yes.""

Richard continued.

"Years later, William became involved with another woman. She gave birth to twins—Vanessa and Victoria. He wanted to ensure that his biological children would never threaten the family fortune.""

Victoria stared at him.

"That's why you kept coming to our house.""

Richard nodded.

"Your father—my father—was concerned about the future of the Hayes estate. He believed that if his children became entangled with the wrong people, they could expose the family's secrets.""

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

"So he arranged for a fire?""

Richard didn't answer.

Marcus looked at him.

"Did you set the fire?""

"No.""

"Did you know who did?""

Richard's silence lasted too long.

Victoria took a step toward him.

"Tell them about the man who came to our house that night.""

Richard's face changed.

"Victoria, stop.""

"Tell them!""

She was crying again, but her voice grew stronger with every word.

"I remember now. Not everything, but enough. I remember a man in a gray coat coming into the house.

I remember Vanessa hiding under the bed. I remember someone shouting. Then I remember smoke.""

She pressed her fingers against her temple.

"I remember the fire.""

Evelyn caught her arm.

"Don't force yourself.""

Victoria shook her head.

"No. I've spent twenty-eight years being afraid of my own memories.""

She looked at Marcus.

"The man in the gray coat worked for your grandfather. He came to collect something William believed belonged to him.""

"What?""

Victoria swallowed.

"A ledger.""

Richard's face turned rigid.

Marcus noticed.

"What ledger?""

Richard looked toward the floor.

"Your grandfather kept records of every payment he made to protect his business interests. Bribes. Secret adoptions.

False identities. He recorded everything.""

"And the ledger was in our house?""

Victoria nodded.

"My father had taken it from William. He was going to give it to the police.""

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Her husband had been dead for years by then, but the realization still hurt.

"He never told me.""

"He was trying to protect you," Victoria whispered.

"But someone found out.""

Marcus understood.

The fire hadn't been an accident.

Someone had come to retrieve the ledger.

And two little girls had been caught in the middle.

"Did Vanessa know about the ledger?"" he asked.

Victoria nodded.

"She found it first. She thought it contained proof that Richard had stolen money from William's estate. She threatened to take it to the police.""

Richard gave a short laugh.

"Vanessa had no idea what she was holding.""

"She knew enough," Victoria replied.

"She knew William had hidden the truth about our family. She knew there was another child—Marcus—who could expose the entire arrangement.""

Marcus's stomach tightened.

"Why would she care about me?""

"Because she believed you were the key to everything. If your identity became public, the inheritance could be challenged. The Hayes family could lose control of the company.""

Richard stepped forward.

"That is enough.""

Victoria ignored him.

"After the fire, Richard convinced Vanessa that she could have a new life if she cooperated. He told her that if she helped him hide the ledger, he would make sure no one ever discovered what happened.""

"And she agreed?""

Victoria looked down.

"She was nine. She was frightened. She thought everyone she loved was dead.""

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

"She was my child, too.""

"I know.""

Victoria's voice softened.

"I tried to find her after I recovered. But when I finally remembered our names, she was already living under a different identity. Richard had sent her away.""

Marcus thought of the woman who had stood at the altar that afternoon.

The woman who had chosen to wear a wig.

The woman who had frightened his daughter into silence.

"Why did you become Vanessa?"" he asked.

Victoria hesitated.

"Because she asked me to.""

Marcus stared at her.

"What?""

"Six years ago, Vanessa found me. She had tracked me through an old hospital record. She told me that Richard was dying and wanted to make amends. She said he had kept the ledger hidden for years, but now the documents were in danger of being discovered.""

Richard looked away.

Victoria continued.

"She said she needed me to return to Savannah, help her recover the ledger, and then we could finally tell the truth.""

"But you didn't.""

"No.""

Victoria's eyes filled with shame.

"She took me to a private clinic. She said Richard had arranged a doctor who could help restore my memory. Instead, I woke up in a room with my hair cut short, my face bruised, and my identification documents missing.""

Marcus stared at her.

"She impersonated you.""

Victoria nodded.

"She took my identity. She used my name to access the old records. She even had my medical history altered.""

"Why?""

"Because she wanted to become me.""

Victoria looked toward Lily.

"And because she wanted to get close to you.""

Marcus felt a chill run down his spine.

"How did she know about me?""

"Richard told her. He said you were the only person who could help her regain control of the Hayes estate. He said if she married you, she could finally secure the inheritance.""

Marcus's hands curled into fists.

"So the wedding was about money.""

"At first," Victoria said.

"But then she became obsessed with the idea of being Lily's mother.""

"Why?""

Victoria's voice broke.

"Because she believed that if she could become Lily's mother, she could finally erase me.""

Lily had been listening quietly from beside the doorway.

Now she stepped forward.

"Mommy?""

Victoria turned.

Lily stared at her with wide, uncertain eyes.

"Are you really my mommy?""

Victoria fell to her knees.

"Oh, my baby.""

Lily ran into her arms.

Victoria held her so tightly that her shoulders shook.

"I'm sorry," she whispered into Lily's hair.

"I'm so sorry I wasn't there.""

Lily clung to her.

"I knew it was you.""

Victoria pulled back.

"What do you mean, sweetheart?""

Lily wiped her cheeks.

"Your voice. Vanessa's voice was different when she thought nobody was listening. But when you called me from the hospital, you sounded like my mommy.""

Marcus froze.

"You spoke to her before tonight?""

Lily nodded.

"Three weeks ago. She called my tablet. She told me not to tell Vanessa.""

Victoria looked at Marcus in alarm.

"I never called her.""

Lily's face crumpled.

"But she said she was my mommy.""

Silence fell.

Marcus slowly turned toward Richard.

The older man's expression had become unreadable.

"Someone else was pretending to be Victoria," Marcus said.

Richard said nothing.

Victoria rose slowly, keeping one hand on Lily's shoulder.

"Who?""

Richard looked toward the back door.

Then he whispered, "The person who has the ledger.""

A loud crash came from the kitchen.

Everyone turned.

The back door swung open.

A figure in a dark coat stood in the doorway, holding a small black case.

Richard went white.

"No," he whispered.

The figure stepped into the light.

It was Vanessa.

But this time, she wasn't wearing a wig.

Her short black hair was damp from the rain. A thin scar ran along her jaw, and her left hand was wrapped in a bloodstained bandage.

She looked at Victoria.

Then at Evelyn.

Finally, her gaze settled on Lily.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Marcus moved in front of his daughter.

"Stay where you are.""

Vanessa raised the black case.

"I brought the ledger.""

Richard took a step toward her.

"Give it to me.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not until they hear the truth.""

Victoria stared at her sister.

"What truth?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"The fire wasn't meant to kill you.""

She looked at Evelyn.

"It was meant to kill me.""

The room fell silent.

Vanessa swallowed hard.

"And the man who ordered it wasn't our grandfather.""

She turned toward Marcus.

"It was your father.""

Marcus's blood ran cold.

"My father is Richard.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"No.""

She opened the black case and removed a photograph.

It showed two men standing outside the old Reed house on the night of the fire.

One was Richard.

The other was a younger man with Marcus's face.

Vanessa placed the photograph on the table.

Then she whispered the name that shattered everything Marcus thought he knew.

"William Hayes didn't die thirty-six years ago.""

She looked at Richard.

"He's been alive this entire time.""

Richard's face crumpled.

For the first time, the man who had controlled their lives for decades looked genuinely afraid.

And from somewhere outside the house came the sound of a car door slamming.

Vanessa turned toward the window.

"They found us.""

A voice shouted from the darkness.

"Richard Hayes! Open the door!""

Richard stared at Marcus.

Then at Evelyn.

Then at the two women who looked exactly alike.

He took a slow breath.

"Whatever happens next," he said, "you must understand one thing.""

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a second photograph.

This one showed a newborn baby in a hospital bassinet.

Two handwritten words appeared on the back.

*Not Lily.*

Richard placed it beside the first photograph.

"Your daughter wasn't the only child born that night.""

The front door shook under a heavy blow.

Lily began to cry.

Marcus stared at the photographs, unable to understand what they meant.

Then Richard looked at him with hollow eyes.

"One of those babies was switched at birth.""

May you like

Another blow struck the door.

And before anyone could ask which child had been taken, the lights went out.
