Chapter 5: The Man Who Had Been Dead for Two Years
Marcus couldn't move.
The voice had come from the dark hallway above them, calm and unmistakable.
"You're late, Vanessa.""
For one impossible second, Marcus was nine years old again, standing in his father's study while Richard lectured him about discipline. He could almost smell the leather-bound books and the bitter coffee Richard drank every morning.
But his father was dead.
Marcus had watched the coffin lowered into the ground.
He had stood beside Lily as she scattered white roses over the grave.
He had signed the paperwork.
He had seen the death certificate.
And now Richard Hayes was speaking from an abandoned house in Savannah.
Lily gripped his hand.
"Daddy?""
He squeezed her fingers.
"Stay behind me.""
Vanessa stood motionless beside the staircase.
Evelyn had gone pale.
"Richard?"" she whispered.
A floorboard creaked above them.
Then a figure appeared at the top of the stairs.
An older man leaned against the banister, wearing a dark sweater and gray trousers. His hair was thinner than Marcus remembered, and a faint scar crossed his left cheek.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold blue.
Unblinking.
Richard looked directly at his son.
"Hello, Marcus.""
The little girl beside Marcus began to cry.
He felt her trembling.
"You stay away from my daughter," Marcus said.
Richard descended one step.
"She's my granddaughter.""
"You are dead.""
Richard gave a small, humorless smile.
"Apparently, someone did a very convincing job of making you believe that.""
Marcus moved toward the stairs.
"Stop right there.""
Richard obeyed, though he looked more amused than afraid.
"Still giving orders, Marcus. You always did get that from me.""
"Who is the man we buried?""
"A man who was paid to take my place.""
Marcus stared at him.
Richard reached into his pocket and produced a folded newspaper clipping.
"Your father was a powerful man. He had enemies. When I needed to disappear, I arranged for the world to believe I was dead.""
"You arranged your own funeral?""
"Not every detail. But enough.""
Marcus's stomach turned.
"You let me mourn you.""
Richard's expression barely changed.
"You were safer believing I was gone.""
Marcus lunged forward, but Evelyn caught his arm.
"Don't," she whispered.
Richard glanced at her.
"Evelyn Reed. Still interfering in matters you don't understand.""
Evelyn stepped forward.
"I understood enough to bury a child who wasn't mine.""
For the first time, Richard's smile disappeared.
"That was unfortunate.""
The words were so casual that Marcus felt a surge of rage.
"Unfortunate?"" he shouted.
"You let a mother believe her daughter was dead!""
Richard adjusted his sleeve.
"Your emotional reaction doesn't change what happened.""
"Then tell me what happened!""
Richard studied him for a moment.
Then he looked at Lily.
"First, get the child out of here.""
"No," Marcus said.
Richard sighed.
"Very well. But understand that once you hear the truth, there will be no going back.""
Lily pressed herself against Marcus.
"He's a bad man, Daddy.""
Richard's gaze sharpened.
"Who told you that?""
Lily didn't answer.
Vanessa suddenly stepped between them.
"Leave her alone.""
Richard looked at her.
"You should have worn the wig.""
Vanessa flinched.
"Why? So I could keep pretending to be someone else?""
"So you could finish what you started.""
"I never agreed to hurt Lily!""
Richard's expression hardened.
"You agreed to marry Marcus. You agreed to keep Victoria away. You agreed to follow the plan.""
"I was a child when you made me agree!""
"And now you're an adult.""
He descended another step.
"Adults are responsible for their choices.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
Marcus turned toward her.
"What plan?""
She looked at him, then at Richard.
Her lips trembled.
"I was supposed to marry you, Marcus. That was all.""
"Why?""
Richard answered for her.
"Because the Hayes family needed an heir who could inherit the company without interference.""
Marcus stared at him.
"What does that have to do with Vanessa?""
Richard folded his hands behind his back.
"Everything.""
He gestured toward a narrow doorway beneath the staircase.
"Come. There's something you need to see.""
Marcus didn't move.
Richard's patience thinned.
"Your father left you a fortune. Your grandfather built an empire. You were always meant to inherit it. But there was a problem with the estate documents.""
"What problem?""
"Your birth certificate.""
Marcus frowned.
"My birth certificate is perfectly valid.""
"Of course it is. The question is whether it tells the truth.""
Richard reached into a drawer and removed a yellowed envelope.
He handed it to Marcus.
Inside was a copy of a hospital record dated thirty-six years earlier.
The document listed Richard Hayes as the father of a newborn boy.
But the mother's name wasn't Marcus's mother.
It was Evelyn Reed.
Marcus read the name again.
Then he looked at Evelyn.
She was staring at the paper with an expression of dawning horror.
"No," she whispered.
Richard watched her.
"You recognize the signature?""
Evelyn shook her head.
"That isn't possible.""
"Isn't it?""
Marcus looked between them.
"Someone explain this.""
Richard leaned against the banister.
"Thirty-six years ago, Evelyn gave birth to a child. She believed the baby had died shortly after birth. Your father—my father—arranged for the child to be transferred to another hospital.""
Marcus's hands began to shake.
"My grandfather?""
"Yes.""
Richard continued.
"The child survived. He was raised by a wealthy family who had lost their own son. The adoption was private. The records were sealed.""
Marcus looked at the document.
"Are you saying I'm adopted?""
Richard shook his head.
"No. I'm saying your entire life was built around the wrong birth certificate.""
Silence filled the hallway.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
She had one hand pressed against her mouth.
"I had a baby boy," she whispered.
"The doctors told me he was gone.""
Richard nodded.
"Your son survived.""
Marcus felt the world tilt.
He looked at the man who had raised him.
"Who is my father?""
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his pocket and removed a photograph.
It showed a young woman holding a newborn baby. Her face was turned slightly away from the camera, but her gold necklace was unmistakable.
Victoria's necklace.
Marcus took the photograph.
On the back, someone had written a date and a name.
October 18, 2018. Baby boy, transferred to protective custody.
His hands went numb.
October 18, 2018.
The same date Lily had been born.
The same hospital.
The same night.
He looked up slowly.
"Why is there a photograph of Victoria holding a baby boy on the day Lily was born?""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Because that was the night everything changed.""
Vanessa began to cry.
"Tell him," she whispered.
Richard ignored her.
"Your wife, Danielle, died that night. Your daughter survived. But there was another child in the hospital, a boy who was never supposed to be discovered.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Where is he?""
Richard's voice dropped.
"That's what Victoria has been trying to find out.""
Evelyn sank onto the bottom step.
"My son," she whispered.
Richard looked at her.
"Your son was adopted. His identity was changed. He grew up in another family, completely unaware of where he came from.""
Marcus felt a sickening certainty forming in his mind.
He remembered the photograph of Richard holding Lily.
He remembered Victoria's voice on the recording.
He remembered the hospital bracelet in the jewelry box.
And he remembered Vanessa saying she had been forced to keep a secret.
"What happened to the boy?"" he demanded.
Richard's gaze shifted toward the dark room beneath the stairs.
"He's standing right in front of me.""
Nobody breathed.
Marcus shook his head.
"No.""
Richard nodded.
"Yes.""
"You said I was your son.""
"I raised you as my son.""
"You told me my mother gave birth to me.""
"She believed she did.""
Marcus stumbled backward.
Evelyn began sobbing.
Richard's expression remained unreadable.
"Your biological mother was Evelyn Reed. Your biological father was my father, William Hayes.""
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
The woman who had just embraced Lily as her granddaughter was his mother.
The woman he had met less than a day earlier.
The woman whose daughters had been separated by a fire.
His entire family tree had been rearranged before he was old enough to speak.
But one question remained.
"Why did you hide it?""
Richard's eyes darkened.
"Because William Hayes had a weakness. He fell in love with women he couldn't control, and when those women became inconvenient, he destroyed their lives.""
Evelyn rose slowly.
"You're lying.""
Richard looked at her.
"Am I?""
He pulled another document from the drawer.
This one bore William Hayes's signature.
It was a private agreement authorizing the transfer of a newborn child to another family in exchange for a substantial payment.
Evelyn stared at it.
Then she looked at Richard.
"You knew.""
"Of course I knew.""
"You helped him steal my baby.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"I was protecting the family.""
Evelyn slapped him.
The sound cracked through the hallway.
For the first time, Richard looked genuinely angry.
"Be careful.""
Evelyn stood trembling before him.
"You stole my son. You let me grieve for a child who was alive. You helped me bury the wrong person.""
Richard rubbed his cheek.
"And now you know why I stayed away.""
Marcus stepped between them.
"You're going to tell me everything.""
Richard looked at his son.
"Everything?""
"Every lie. Every secret. Every person you paid to keep quiet.""
Richard's mouth tightened.
Then he glanced at Vanessa.
"Very well. Ask your bride why she was so eager to marry you.""
Marcus turned.
Vanessa had gone deathly pale.
Richard continued.
"Ask her why she needed access to your family trust. Ask her why she needed Lily to call her mother. And ask her why, when Victoria disappeared from Savannah six years ago, Vanessa was the last person seen with her.""
Marcus stared at the woman he had nearly married.
"Is that true?""
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
"He's twisting everything!""
"Then tell me what happened to Victoria.""
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
For several seconds, she seemed unable to speak.
Then she whispered, "I didn't kill her.""
Marcus felt his heart stop.
"Nobody said she was dead.""
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Richard closed his eyes.
And in that tiny, involuntary movement, Marcus understood that he had just heard the first honest confession of the evening.
Vanessa backed away.
"I didn't mean—"
"Where is Victoria?"" Marcus demanded.
Vanessa began sobbing.
"I don't know!""
Richard stepped toward her.
"Enough.""
"No!"" she screamed.
"You promised me you'd never tell him!""
Richard stopped.
Marcus looked from one to the other.
"What promise?""
Vanessa stared at him through her tears.
Then she spoke the words that would change everything.
"Richard promised that if I helped him erase Victoria's identity, he would give me back my own.""
Marcus frowned.
"Your own identity?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Because the woman you've been calling Vanessa Reed for the last fourteen months…"
May you like
She pointed at herself.
"…was never Vanessa Reed at all.""
