Chapter 6: The Truth About the Two Mothers

Marcus stood motionless beneath the cold fluorescent lights.

The voice coming through the speakers sounded like his own.

Not similar.

Identical.

Every inflection. Every pause. Even the slight rasp that appeared when he was angry.

"Who are you?"" Marcus demanded.

A soft laugh came through the speaker.

"You already know.""

"Michael?""

"That's what they called me.""

Marcus moved toward the terminal.

"Where are you?""

"Close enough to watch you make the same mistakes Father made.""

The monitor flickered.

A live camera feed appeared.

A man stood in a dark room, facing away from the lens. He wore a black shirt and had his hands clasped behind his back.

When he turned, Marcus stumbled backward.

The man's face was his face.

Older. Harder. Marked by a pale scar that crossed his right cheek.

But the resemblance was so exact that Marcus felt as though he were staring into a mirror that had aged thirty years without him.

Lily gasped.

"Daddy?""

Marcus couldn't look away.

The man on the screen tilted his head.

"Hello, little brother.""

Marcus gripped the edge of the desk.

"You were four when you supposedly died.""

"I was four when Father decided I was more useful dead.""

"What does that mean?""

"It means Richard Whitmore understood the value of a dead child better than most men understand the value of a living one.""

Michael's expression darkened.

"Father had built his fortune by collecting secrets. Politicians, judges, bankers, developers. He kept evidence on everyone who mattered. He believed that if he owned enough secrets, nobody could ever touch him.""

Marcus glanced at the wall of photographs.

"And you discovered the archive.""

"I discovered it when I was four.""

Marcus stared at him.

"You were a child.""

"Children notice things adults ignore. I saw Father take a man into the basement. I heard shouting. The next morning, the man was gone, and Mother was crying.""

Michael looked directly into the camera.

"Father told her I had been killed in a car accident. He showed her a damaged toy and a photograph of a wreck. Then he told her that if she ever spoke about what she'd seen, Marcus would be next.""

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

"Our mother believed him?""

"For a while.""

Michael's voice softened.

"She was terrified. She had two sons, and she believed one was dead. Father made her swear she would never tell you about me.""

Evelyn lowered herself into a chair.

"Dear God.""

Michael looked toward the camera.

"Victoria found out years later. She was helping Father organize his financial records when she found my name in an old medical file. She realized I had been admitted to a private facility under another identity.""

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

"How did you become involved?""

Vanessa stood beside the door, pale and trembling.

"Victoria called me because she needed someone she could trust.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"She made a terrible choice.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

"I was trying to help her!""

"You helped Father.""

"I was twenty-two!""

"And you were old enough to understand what he was doing.""

Marcus stepped between them.

"Enough. Where is Victoria?""

Michael's expression changed.

For the first time, the anger in his face gave way to grief.

"I don't know.""

Marcus shook his head.

"That isn't good enough.""

"I haven't seen her in six years.""

"Then why did you tell me Vanessa was responsible for her disappearance?""

"Because Vanessa knows what happened that night.""

Marcus turned toward the bride.

"Tell me.""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

For a moment, she seemed to be fighting an internal battle.

Then she removed a small hairpin from her wedding gown and placed it on the desk.

"I was with Victoria the night she disappeared.""

Evelyn stood.

"You told me you hadn't seen her!""

"I lied.""

"Why?""

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

"Because Victoria asked me to.""

Marcus felt his patience snap.

"Stop hiding behind my wife. She isn't here to defend herself. Tell us what happened.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Victoria came to me three weeks before the accident. She was pregnant again.""

Sophie looked up.

"Mommy?""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"Not you, sweetheart. Your mother.""

She took a shaky breath.

"Victoria had discovered that Richard was planning to move the archive overseas. He wanted to sell the information to people who would pay millions to keep their secrets buried. She believed the records would be used to destroy innocent families.""

Michael nodded grimly.

"She was right.""

"She wanted to take the archive to the authorities," Vanessa continued.

"But she knew Richard would never let her leave with the evidence.""

Marcus stared at her.

"So she asked you to help her escape.""

"Yes.""

"And you betrayed her.""

Vanessa looked down.

"At first.""

The confession landed like a stone.

"I told Richard where she was going. I thought he'd frighten her into changing her mind. I thought he'd make her give him the records and send her away.""

Her voice broke.

"I never thought he'd hurt her.""

Michael's expression turned murderous.

"He had her followed.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Richard's men intercepted her outside Atlanta. I arrived just as they were taking her car. Victoria was gone.""

Marcus felt his knees weaken.

"Was she alive?""

"I don't know.""

"You saw them take her?""

"Yes.""

"Then why did you let me believe she was dead?""

Vanessa looked at him through her tears.

"Because Richard threatened Lily.""

Lily stepped closer to her father.

Marcus wrapped an arm around her.

Vanessa continued.

"He said if you went looking for Victoria, Lily would disappear too. He told me that if I wanted to keep her safe, I had to become the person he needed me to be.""

Marcus stared at her.

"So you stole my wife's identity.""

"I didn't have another choice.""

"You always had a choice.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not when Richard showed me photographs of Lily at school. Not when he told me that your daughter would be buried beside her mother if I disobeyed him.""

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Sophie began to cry.

Vanessa reached toward her, but Sophie moved behind Evelyn.

The rejection cut deeper than any accusation.

Vanessa lowered her hand.

"I know what I did was wrong.""

"No," Marcus said.

"You know you were caught.""

He turned back to the screen.

"Michael, you said Vanessa was the reason our mother disappeared. What does that have to do with Victoria?""

Michael's face tightened.

"Because Victoria wasn't the first woman Father erased.""

The room went still.

"Our mother found out I was alive," Michael continued.

"She tried to get me out. She came to the facility where Father had hidden me, and she brought Victoria with her.""

Marcus's heart pounded.

"Victoria was there?""

"Yes. She was sixteen. She helped Mother steal the records that proved I was alive.""

"Then what happened?""

Michael looked away.

"Father caught them.""

Evelyn began to cry silently.

"Mother was taken to the hospital," Michael continued.

"Father told everyone she had suffered a breakdown. He had her declared incompetent, and she died six months later.""

Marcus shook his head.

"No. My mother died of a stroke.""

"That's what the death certificate says.""

Michael leaned closer to the camera.

"Father controlled the doctors, the lawyers, the police. He could make any story official if he paid enough people to repeat it.""

Marcus looked at the wall of photographs.

His entire childhood seemed to rearrange itself before his eyes.

The locked doors.

The missing photographs.

The strange men who sometimes visited his father after midnight.

The way Richard had forbidden him from asking questions about the family.

He had mistaken secrecy for strength.

He had mistaken fear for respect.

And now he was discovering that the man he had spent his life trying to impress had been capable of destroying everyone who loved him.

"What happened to Victoria after the interception?"" Marcus asked.

Michael's expression darkened.

"She escaped.""

Marcus froze.

"What?""

"She got away from the men who took her car. But she was injured, and she was carrying a child. She contacted me through an intermediary.""

"Why didn't she contact me?""

"Because she believed you were working with Father.""

Marcus's voice cracked.

"I would never have hurt her.""

"I know that now.""

Michael paused.

"But she didn't.""

Marcus turned away.

For six years, he had wondered whether Victoria had suffered in her final moments.

Whether she had called his name.

Whether she had known how much he loved her.

And all that time, she might have been alive, hiding from a family that had convinced him she was dead.

"Where did she go?"" he whispered.

Michael looked at Vanessa.

"That's the question she has been asking herself for six years.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know where she is.""

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"Then why did you take the necklace?""

Vanessa froze.

Marcus turned toward her.

"The locket Lily found.""

Vanessa's shoulders began to shake.

"Because Victoria gave it to me.""

"When?""

"The night she escaped.""

Vanessa reached into the pocket sewn beneath her wedding gown and pulled out a small folded note.

"I was supposed to deliver this to Marcus if she didn't come back within thirty days.""

Marcus took the paper.

The handwriting was Victoria's.

His hands trembled as he unfolded it.

Marcus, if Vanessa gives you this letter, it means I failed to reach you.

He stopped reading.

The words blurred.

He forced himself to continue.

I need you to know that I never stopped loving you. I left because I believed our children would be safer without me. Richard has built a world where the truth can be bought, sold, and buried. I thought I could destroy it before it swallowed us all.

Marcus looked up.

"Our children?""

Vanessa nodded slowly.

"Victoria gave birth to Sophie while she was hiding. I helped her arrange for Grace to care for the baby. I thought that if Sophie stayed away from the Whitmore family, Richard would never find her.""

Sophie clutched Evelyn's hand.

"Why didn't you stay with me?""

Vanessa looked at her.

"Because I was afraid.""

Sophie shook her head.

"You said you would come back.""

"I know.""

"You promised.""

Vanessa's tears fell freely now.

"I know, sweetheart.""

Sophie turned away.

The little girl's silence was more devastating than her anger.

Marcus continued reading.

There is one more thing you must know. The child you believe is yours may not be the child you think she is.

He stopped.

The room went silent.

Lily looked up at him.

"Daddy?""

Marcus read the sentence again.

Then a third time.

He turned toward Vanessa.

"What does this mean?""

Vanessa's face had gone completely white.

Michael's expression changed on the screen.

"Marcus," he said urgently, "put the letter down.""

Marcus looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because there's something you don't understand.""

Michael leaned toward the camera.

"Victoria had twins.""

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.

"What?""

"Two girls. Sophie was the first. The second was born minutes later.""

Lily stepped backward.

"No.""

Marcus looked at his daughter.

Michael's voice dropped.

"One of those babies was taken from the hospital before Victoria could hold her.""

Evelyn sank into the chair.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus stared at Lily.

For eight years, he had raised her as his own daughter.

He had watched her take her first steps, heard her first words, and held her through every nightmare.

Now someone was telling him that she might have been the missing twin.

Or that the child he had raised might have been switched with another baby.

His voice shook.

"Which girl is Lily?""

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Then the monitor went black.

The lights in the archive flickered.

A loud metallic crash sounded beyond the door.

Vanessa grabbed Sophie's hand.

"We have to leave.""

Marcus caught her arm.

"Not until you tell me what you know.""

She stared at him.

For the first time, there was no performance left in her face.

Only terror.

"I know which baby was taken," she whispered.

Marcus felt his heart stop.

"Tell me.""

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then at Sophie.

Then at the dark screen.

And she spoke the words that shattered everything he believed about his daughters.

"Lily isn't Victoria's biological child.""

The little girl began to cry.

Marcus pulled her into his arms.

"No," he whispered.

"No, sweetheart. We don't know that.""

But Vanessa was already shaking her head.

"Richard arranged the switch before the girls were born. He wanted one child raised by you and the other hidden where he could control her.""

Marcus stared at her.

"Why?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with horror.

"Because one of those girls inherited something Richard wanted more than his entire fortune.""

A heavy bang shook the archive door.

Someone shouted from the tunnel.

Then the door handle began to turn.

Vanessa grabbed Marcus's wrist.

"Listen to me. The girl Richard wanted wasn't Sophie.""

She looked at Lily.

"It was you.""

The lock clicked.

The door swung inward.

A man stood in the doorway, holding a photograph in one hand and a gun in the other.

His face was identical to Marcus's.

But his eyes were colder than winter.

Michael had arrived.

And behind him stood a woman with short black curls, a pale scar near her temple, and a silver locket hanging around her neck.

Victoria.

Alive.

Marcus stopped breathing.

Lily let out a broken sob.

"Mommy?""

Victoria looked at her daughter.

Then at Sophie.

Then at Vanessa.

Her expression hardened.

"Don't let her touch either child," she said.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Victoria?""

She raised the gun.

Not toward him.

May you like

Toward Vanessa.

And whispered, "I'm sorry, Marcus. But before you decide which woman deserves your trust, you need to know which one of us gave birth to your daughters.""
