Chapter 3: The Dead Woman's Photograph
Marcus had spent six years learning how to live with grief.
He had learned to sleep on one side of the bed. He had learned to pack Lily's lunch without the little handwritten notes Victoria used to leave. He had learned to smile at school events when other fathers arrived with their wives.
He had even learned how to speak about his wife in the past tense without feeling as though he were betraying her.
But he had never learned how to look at a photograph of her taken after her funeral.
Daniel Price held the picture between two fingers.
Marcus snatched it from him.
"Where did you get this?""
"From a file your father instructed me to keep sealed.""
"Where was it taken?""
"Outside a house near Macon.""
"Who took it?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Your father.""
Marcus looked down.
The woman in the photograph wore a faded blue sweater and stood on a wooden porch. Her short curls were tucked behind one ear. She looked tired, thinner than Marcus remembered, but unmistakably alive.
In her arms was a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.
Victoria.
His Victoria.
Marcus's fingers began to tremble.
"How old is the baby?""
"Approximately three weeks.""
"That's impossible.""
Daniel lowered his eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
"You signed her death certificate.""
"I did not sign the certificate itself. I prepared the legal paperwork your father requested.""
"You told me she was dead!""
"Because Richard told me she was dead.""
Marcus grabbed Daniel by the lapels.
"You let me bury an empty casket?""
Daniel didn't fight him.
"I believed I was protecting you.""
Marcus shoved him away.
"From what?""
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
"From the truth about your wife. And from the truth about the woman you were about to marry.""
Vanessa began backing toward the side corridor.
Evelyn saw her move.
"Don't even think about leaving.""
Vanessa stopped.
"You can't keep me here.""
"No," Evelyn replied.
"But you won't get far.""
Two security guards had positioned themselves near the doors. One glanced toward Marcus, waiting for instructions.
Marcus barely noticed them.
He was still staring at the photograph.
The baby had a small white bracelet around one wrist. Beneath it, someone had written a name in blue ink.
Lily.
Marcus felt the world narrow to a single point.
His daughter had been born before Victoria disappeared. The dates were clear. The baby in the picture was too young to be Lily.
He looked up at Daniel.
"Whose child is this?""
Daniel swallowed.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I swear to you, Marcus. I don't know.""
Vanessa let out a strained laugh.
"He's telling the truth. That baby has nothing to do with us.""
Evelyn turned on her.
"Then why are you frightened?""
"I'm not frightened!""
"You're shaking.""
Vanessa looked down.
Her hands were trembling.
She curled them into fists.
"I have nothing to hide.""
Evelyn approached her slowly.
"Then tell us why you stole your sister's identity.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
The fear vanished beneath a mask of contempt.
"You want the truth? Fine. You want to know why I did it?""
She looked directly at Marcus.
"Because I was tired of being Vanessa Reed.""
The words fell into the stunned silence.
"I was tired of being the daughter who never measured up. Tired of watching Victoria get everything while I stood in the background. She had the loving husband, the beautiful home, the child everyone adored. Even when she made mistakes, people forgave her.""
Evelyn's voice was low.
"Victoria never stole anything from you.""
"She didn't have to!""
Vanessa gestured toward the ballroom.
"Look around. Everything she had could have been mine. The money.
The name. The life.""
Marcus stared at her.
"So you pretended to be my wife?""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"Not at first.""
"Explain.""
She looked toward the photograph in his hand.
"Six years ago, Victoria called me. She was crying. She said she had discovered something about Richard and needed my help. She wanted me to meet her outside Atlanta.""
Evelyn shook her head.
"Victoria told me she was going to the police.""
"She told everyone something different," Vanessa snapped.
"She always did.""
Vanessa drew a breath.
"When I arrived, she was terrified. She said Richard had been moving money through shell companies. She had copies of his records, and she planned to take them to the authorities.""
Daniel spoke quietly.
"That's true.""
Marcus turned toward him.
"You knew?""
"I knew about the financial records. I didn't know where Victoria was.""
Vanessa continued.
"Victoria said Richard had threatened her. She thought she could force him to leave her alone if she exposed him. I told her she was being reckless.""
"And what happened?"" Marcus demanded.
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
"We argued.""
"About what?""
"About everything. About how she always thought she knew better than me. About how she had no idea what it was like to be the daughter nobody chose.""
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"She chose you, Vanessa. Every time you needed help, she chose you.""
Vanessa looked away.
For a moment, she seemed almost ashamed.
Then she straightened.
"Victoria left me that night. I never saw her again.""
Marcus raised the photograph.
"Then explain this.""
Vanessa stared at the image.
"I don't know.""
"You expect me to believe that?""
"It's the truth!""
Daniel opened his briefcase again.
"There is more.""
He removed a thin folder containing bank statements, handwritten notes, and several pages bearing Richard Whitmore's signature.
"I found these in a concealed compartment in his study shortly after his death," Daniel said.
"I was instructed to destroy them.""
"Why didn't you?"" Marcus asked.
Daniel looked at Lily.
"Because of her.""
The little girl clung to Evelyn's waist.
Daniel's voice softened.
"Richard wrote that the documents should be destroyed only if Victoria's daughter was never found.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Found? Lily has lived with me her entire life.""
"Richard wasn't referring to Lily.""
The ballroom seemed to tilt.
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
The baby in Victoria's arms.
The bracelet.
The date.
Then he looked at Lily.
His daughter was eight years old, with soft brown curls and a tiny dimple in her left cheek. Victoria had had the same dimple. Marcus had spent years telling Lily how much she resembled her mother.
But something in Daniel's words made him look at the baby in the picture again.
"You're saying Victoria had another child?""
Daniel nodded.
"According to the records, yes.""
Evelyn pressed a hand to her mouth.
"No.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Evelyn, I'm sorry.""
"No," she repeated, her voice breaking.
"Victoria would have told me.""
"She may have been trying to protect you.""
"Protect me from what?""
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
"From the same people who made her disappear.""
Marcus felt cold spread through his chest.
"Who?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he placed another document on the table.
It was a birth record.
The mother's name was Victoria Carter.
The father's name was blank.
And the child's name had been crossed out and replaced with a single word.
*UNKNOWN.*
Marcus stared at the page.
"Why would someone erase a baby's name?""
"Because someone wanted the child to disappear from the records," Daniel replied.
"Who?""
Daniel looked toward the bride.
"Your father.""
Vanessa let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh.
"Richard is dead. You can't blame everything on him.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"I have his signature on every page.""
"Then you're as guilty as he was!""
"Perhaps," Daniel said.
"But I didn't marry his son under a false identity.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"How long?""
She didn't answer.
"How long have you been pretending to be Victoria?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"Marcus, I loved you.""
"Don't.""
"I did!""
"You knew I was grieving. You knew I believed my wife was dead. You stood beside me at her memorial and held my hand while I cried.""
Her mouth trembled.
"I never meant for it to go this far.""
Marcus looked at her in disbelief.
"You wore her face.""
"I wore a wig!""
"You used her name!""
"Because you wouldn't have looked at me otherwise!""
The admission tore through the room.
Vanessa seemed to hear her own words for the first time.
She looked at Marcus, searching his face for the man who had once promised to protect her.
But he was gone.
In his place stood a father who had just learned that his entire life might have been built on a lie.
Lily stepped away from Evelyn.
"Miss Vanessa?""
Vanessa turned.
For one brief moment, something like tenderness crossed her face.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
Lily flinched at the familiar endearment.
"Did you know my mommy was alive?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Lily's lower lip trembled.
"Did you know where she was?""
Vanessa looked toward Marcus.
Then toward the doors.
Then back at the child.
"I didn't know where she was," she whispered.
It sounded almost believable.
Until Lily spoke again.
"Then why did you keep her necklace?""
Vanessa froze.
Marcus turned sharply.
"What necklace?""
Lily reached into the pocket of her flower-girl dress and pulled out a small silver locket.
The chain was broken.
A tiny scratch crossed the front.
"I found it in her jewelry box," Lily said.
"The one Daddy told me not to open.""
Marcus stared at the locket.
He recognized it immediately.
Victoria had worn it every day of their marriage.
Inside was a photograph of Lily as a newborn, with a handwritten message on the back.
To my little bug. If anything ever happens to me, remember that I loved you before the world knew your name.
Marcus had placed the locket in Victoria's casket himself.
He remembered the cold metal against his palm.
He remembered kissing it before he lowered it into the silk-lined box.
And now it was in Lily's hand.
"Where did you find that?"" he asked.
"In Vanessa's suitcase.""
Every head turned toward the bride.
Vanessa's face went white.
Marcus held out his hand.
"Give me the suitcase.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"No.""
"Give it to me.""
"You have no right!""
"Then tell me why my dead wife's necklace was in your suitcase.""
Vanessa's lips moved, but no sound emerged.
Evelyn stepped toward her.
"Because you took it from Victoria.""
"No!""
"Because you knew she was alive.""
"Stop!""
"Because you've been hiding something from this family for six years!""
Vanessa suddenly lunged for Lily.
Marcus intercepted her, pushing her back against the altar.
The security guards rushed forward.
"Get her away from the child!"" Marcus shouted.
Vanessa struggled as the guards caught her arms.
"You don't understand!"" she screamed.
"I was trying to protect you!""
"From what?"" Marcus demanded.
"From her!""
She pointed at Evelyn.
"From all of them!""
Evelyn stood motionless.
Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded letter.
The paper was yellowed, its edges softened by years of handling.
"I received this three weeks ago," she said.
Marcus took it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Victoria's.
His hands shook as he read the first line.
Mom, if you're reading this, Vanessa has found Marcus. I know what she's planning, and I know what she will tell him.
He looked up at the bride.
Vanessa had stopped struggling.
For the first time since the wig came off, she looked utterly defeated.
Marcus lowered his eyes to the letter again.
The next sentence made his blood run cold.
But there is something Marcus must know before he believes anything she says.
He continued reading.
The woman he buried was not me.
A sound escaped Lily's throat.
Marcus could barely breathe.
The letter continued.
And the little girl he has raised as our daughter is not the only child I left behind.
Marcus looked at Lily.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at Vanessa.
The bride's eyes filled with tears, but she didn't look sorry.
She looked cornered.
Marcus turned the page.
The final line was written in darker ink, as though Victoria had pressed the pen so hard it nearly tore the paper.
If Vanessa has married Marcus, then she has already found the child we all thought was lost.
Marcus looked toward the open ballroom doors.
Beyond them, a figure stood in the dim corridor.
A little girl.
Perhaps seven years old.
She wore a blue sweater and held a yellow blanket against her chest.
Her dark curls framed a face that looked exactly like Lily's.
And around her wrist was a small white bracelet.
The girl looked at Marcus.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
May you like
And she whispered the words that brought Evelyn to her knees.
"Mommy?""
