Chapter 5: What Vanessa Was Hiding

Richard Hayes arrived at the estate twenty-three minutes later.

He carried a leather briefcase, a laptop, and the expression of a man who had expected to review a wedding contract and instead found himself facing a crisis.

Daniel met him in the study.

“Thank you for coming.””

Richard set the briefcase on the desk.

“Where is Vanessa?””

“Under supervision in the guest sitting room. She isn't leaving the property until we understand what she's done.””

“Good. And Lily?””

“With my sister. She's shaken, but she's safe.””

Richard nodded.

“Then let's begin with the documents.””

Daniel placed the residential school application on the desk.

Richard examined it carefully.

He studied the signature, the admission date, and the section naming Vanessa as the person authorized to complete the enrollment process.

“This is serious,” he said.

“She forged my signature.””

“It certainly appears inconsistent with the signature on your identification documents. We should preserve the original and let the appropriate authorities examine it.””

“What about the blue folder?””

Richard took off his glasses.

“Claire wanted to establish additional safeguards around Lily's trust. We discussed the possibility that someone might attempt to obtain authority over her finances by becoming her guardian or presenting themselves as a trusted family member.””

“Was Vanessa that person?””

“I can't say that for certain without reviewing the missing documents.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Richard, she had the key to Claire's desk. She had access to papers she shouldn't have touched. She submitted an application to put my daughter in residential care, and she tried to take Lily off the estate grounds without my permission.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Then we're dealing with more than a disagreement over parenting.””

He opened his briefcase and removed several copies of the trust documents.

“Claire's estate planning was unusually specific. Lily is the beneficiary of a protected fund. It cannot be accessed by a future spouse, and any guardianship arrangement must follow the terms Claire established and the applicable legal process.””

“Can Vanessa take money from it?””

“Not simply by marrying you. But there are other ways a dishonest person might attempt to obtain access, particularly through forged documents or a false claim of authority.””

Daniel thought of the blue folder.

“What if she had the documents changed?””

“Then we'll need to know exactly what she submitted and where.””

Richard opened his laptop.

“I'd like to ask you a question. Did Vanessa ever handle any of your financial paperwork?””

“Occasionally. She helped organize invoices for the wedding and had access to some household records.””

“Did she ever have access to your personal identification documents?””

Daniel considered it.

“Possibly. The wedding planner needed copies for the venue insurance. Vanessa handled most of that.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“Let's not make assumptions. We'll establish what happened through the records.””

A knock sounded at the door.

Mariah stepped inside.

“Lily wants to see you.””

Daniel rose immediately.

“Of course.””

He found his daughter sitting on the sofa in the blue sitting room, wrapped in a blanket. Her curls had been gathered loosely to hide the damaged side, but several strands kept slipping forward.

When she saw him, she climbed down and hurried into his arms.

“Daddy, am I going away tomorrow?””

He knelt in front of her.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Not even if I'm bad?””

Daniel's heart broke.

“Especially not because someone says you're bad. You are not being sent away.””

Lily touched the uneven section of her hair.

“Will my hair grow back?””

“Yes. It will take time, but it will grow back.””

“Will everybody laugh at me?””

He brushed a tear from her cheek.

“Some people might notice. But there's nothing wrong with you. You don't have to look perfect to deserve love.””

Lily watched him carefully.

“Will you still marry Miss Vanessa?””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“No, sweetheart.””

Her eyes widened.

“Because of me?””

“No.”” He held her hands.

“Listen to me. Adults are responsible for their own choices. You didn't make Vanessa do anything.

You didn't cause this. You are not responsible for what happens between grown-ups.””

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

Lily leaned forward and wrapped her arms around his neck.

He held her until her breathing steadied.

When he returned to the study, Richard was examining a printed email.

“Where did you get that?”” Daniel asked.

“Vanessa's admission correspondence. The school sent it to you after I asked them to preserve all communications connected to the application.””

Richard turned the laptop toward him.

The first email was ordinary. Vanessa had introduced herself as Daniel's fiancée and requested information about enrollment.

The second was more troubling.

She had written that Lily was struggling emotionally, that her father was overwhelmed, and that a residential placement would provide stability.

The third email contained the line that made Daniel's stomach turn.

The child's father may resist at first. Please allow me to complete the process privately, as his grief sometimes prevents him from seeing what is best for her.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“She made me sound incompetent.””

“She was attempting to establish herself as the responsible adult,” Richard said.

“That may be relevant to her intentions, but we'll leave the conclusions to the investigators.””

Daniel scrolled farther.

A final message had been sent the previous evening.

Please ensure all paperwork is complete before October 28. The family will be occupied with the wedding, and I expect the child's father will be less likely to interfere once the ceremony has taken place.

Daniel pushed the laptop away.

“She planned this.””

“Yes,” Richard replied quietly.

“It appears to have been deliberate.””

Then Daniel noticed an attachment.

It was a scanned page from a legal document.

At the top was Claire's full name.

Below it was a request to amend the guardianship provisions connected to Lily's trust.

The signature was dated eleven days before Claire's death.

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Is this the missing folder?””

“No. It's a copy of a document Claire had asked me to review. But I don't recognize the final page.””

Richard enlarged the attachment.

A paragraph had been added beneath Claire's requested changes.

It named Vanessa Cole as a proposed temporary guardian, to be considered in the event of Daniel's death or incapacity.

Richard's face tightened.

“I never approved this language.””

“Could Claire have signed it?””

“The first page appears to contain her signature, but we need to examine the original. The added paragraph has different formatting. It may have been attached later.””

Daniel leaned back.

“So Vanessa was trying to make herself Lily's guardian.””

“Possibly. But a proposed document is not necessarily a legally effective one.””

“Then why did she need to send Lily away?””

Richard considered the question.

“Perhaps she believed that if Lily were placed in residential care, she would have more influence over where Lily lived and who made decisions for her. We should not assume the precise motive until we have more evidence.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

He was tired in a way sleep could not fix.

All morning, he had been trying to understand how a woman who claimed to love him could behave so cruelly toward his child.

Now he was beginning to see the pattern.

Vanessa hadn't simply objected to Lily's presence.

She had been building a case against her.

Every tantrum exaggerated. Every nightmare described as a behavioral problem. Every ordinary need transformed into evidence that the little girl was too difficult to raise at home.

And Daniel, desperate to believe he had found someone who could love both him and his daughter, had allowed Vanessa to explain away the warning signs.

Richard closed the laptop.

“I recommend that we contact the police, notify the school in writing, and secure every document connected to Claire's estate. We should also make sure Vanessa has no access to your financial or personal records.””

“Do it.””

“There's one more thing.””

Richard removed a small plastic evidence sleeve from his briefcase.

Inside was a photocopy of a handwritten note.

Daniel recognized Claire's writing.

If Vanessa comes to you after my death, ask her about the night she called me from the east entrance. Ask her why she knew I was going to the lawyer's office.

Daniel read the note twice.

“What does this mean?””

Richard shook his head.

“I don't know. It wasn't in the file I kept. I found this copy among the papers the school forwarded.””

Daniel felt the room grow smaller.

“Vanessa knew Claire was going to the lawyer?””

“Apparently.””

“Was Vanessa at the hospital that night?””

“I can't tell you that.””

Daniel stood.

“Then we'll ask her.””

Vanessa sat in the guest sitting room with a glass of water untouched on the table.

Her wedding shoes had been removed. Her veil lay on the floor beside her chair. Without the elaborate arrangement of her hair and the carefully rehearsed smile, she looked much younger.

And much more dangerous.

When Daniel entered with Richard, she rose.

“Daniel, thank God. I've been waiting for you.””

He remained standing.

“Richard Hayes, our family attorney.””

Vanessa looked at the lawyer, then back at Daniel.

“I don't see why we need him. This is a private family matter.””

Richard set the photocopy on the table.

“Then you should have no difficulty answering a few questions.””

Vanessa looked down.

The color drained from her face.

Daniel noticed the way her fingers curled inward.

“Claire wrote this note,” he said.

“She wanted to know why you called her from the east entrance on the night she died.””

Vanessa stared at the page.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Then she laughed softly.

“Claire always did like making everything sound mysterious.””

“Did you call her?””

“I spoke to her many times.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“Yes. I called her.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted to talk.””

“About what?””

“Her daughter.””

“Our daughter,” Daniel corrected.

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“That's exactly the problem. You still can't accept that I was trying to become part of this family.””

“Being part of a family doesn't mean taking control of it.””

She looked away.

Daniel placed the photocopy beside the glass.

“Claire knew you were going to the lawyer's office. She wanted safeguards put in place for Lily. Why?””

Vanessa pressed her fingertips to her temples.

“I didn't know she was going to change anything.””

“Then why did she write this?””

“Because she was frightened.””

“Of you?””

“Of everyone!””

Vanessa's voice cracked.

“She was dying, Daniel. She knew she was leaving Lily behind. She didn't trust anyone enough to let go.””

Richard remained silent.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Did you ask Claire to name you as a guardian?””

Vanessa's silence lasted too long.

“Did you?””

“Yes,” she whispered.

“I asked her to consider it.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to help.””

“You had known her for months.””

“I knew her better than you think.””

“Then tell me why you were so interested in her legal documents.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was trying to make sure Lily would be taken care of.””

“You forged my signature on an application to send her away.””

“Because I knew you'd say no!””

“That doesn't justify it.””

“I was running out of time!””

Daniel went still.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

Then she spoke in a voice barely above a whisper.

“Claire had found out something about me. Something that would have ended everything before it began.””

Richard leaned forward.

“What exactly had she found out?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“I can't tell you.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Can't, or won't?””

“Both.””

He turned toward the door.

“Then the police can ask you.””

Vanessa sprang to her feet.

“Wait!””

Daniel stopped.

She gripped the back of the chair.

“Please. You don't understand what Claire was going to do.””

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“She was going to tell you that I had been the one driving the car.””

The room fell silent.

Daniel turned slowly.

“What car?””

May you like

Vanessa looked at him, and her face crumpled.

“The night Claire died.””
