Chapter 4: The Night Claire Died
Daniel found Mariah in Lily’s bedroom, kneeling beside an open wooden toy chest.
The room smelled of lavender detergent and the vanilla lotion Lily insisted on using before bed. A little pink cardigan lay across the quilt. Her stuffed rabbit sat beneath the window, one ear folded over, exactly where she had left it that morning.
Everything looked painfully ordinary.
Mariah held a small cream envelope between both hands.
“I found this inside Claire’s old picture book,” she said.
“It was tucked beneath the back cover. I was looking for something to distract Lily, and the book fell open.””
Daniel closed the bedroom door.
“Is that what you meant in your message?””
Mariah nodded. Her eyes were red.
“There's more. I should have told you years ago.””
He looked at her.
“Then tell me now.””
She glanced toward Lily, who sat in an adjoining sitting room with the housekeeper. Through the half-open door, Daniel could hear the little girl asking whether her father was coming back soon.
He had promised her he would.
He intended to keep that promise.
Mariah placed the envelope on Lily’s desk.
“Before you read this, you need to know what happened the night Claire died.””
Daniel felt the same coldness he had experienced in Vanessa’s dressing suite.
“Vanessa said you were supposed to be driving.””
“I was.””
He stared at his sister.
“You were there that night?””
“Not in the car. But I was supposed to take her.””
Mariah sank into the little chair beside the desk.
“Claire called me shortly after seven. She wanted me to drive her to a lawyer’s office. She said there was something important she needed to sign before the office closed.””
“What was it?””
“A change to Lily’s guardianship documents. She wanted everything reviewed.””
Daniel frowned.
“She never mentioned changing Lily’s guardianship.””
“Because she didn't want to frighten you. She was sick, Daniel. She was trying to make sure Lily would be protected if something happened to both of you.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Why didn't you drive her?””
Mariah swallowed.
“Because we argued.””
The confession seemed to cost her something.
“Claire had been asking questions about Vanessa for weeks. She'd noticed that Vanessa was interested in documents she had no reason to see. She'd asked me to look into it, and I told her she was becoming paranoid because of the medication.””
Daniel stood perfectly still.
“Claire was suspicious of Vanessa before she died?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I thought Claire was afraid of dying. I thought she was seeing danger everywhere.””
Mariah's voice cracked.
“And I was exhausted. I had been helping with Lily, helping you, trying to keep everything together. That night, Claire called me again and asked me to come immediately. I told her she couldn't keep ordering me around.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What happened next?””
“She said she couldn't wait. She said if she didn't get those documents signed that evening, someone else might get the opportunity to make decisions about Lily that she would never approve of.””
“Did she say Vanessa's name?””
Mariah nodded.
“She said, 'If anything happens to me, don't let Vanessa near my daughter.''”
The words seemed to drain the color from the room.
Daniel looked down at the envelope.
“What was in those documents?””
“I don't know. Claire left before I could call her back.””
Mariah wiped her cheek.
“An hour later, the police called. They said her car had gone off the road in heavy rain. They thought she'd lost control on a bend.””
Daniel remembered the day the funeral director had handed him Claire’s wedding ring in a small velvet pouch.
He remembered Lily asking why Mommy wasn't coming home.
He remembered telling his daughter that sometimes terrible things happened even when nobody wanted them to.
For two years, he had believed that was all there was to the story.
Now he wasn't sure of anything.
“You let me believe there was nothing else,” he said.
“I didn't know what else to tell you.””
“You knew she was frightened of Vanessa.””
“I knew she'd been worried. I didn't know why. And I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“Of refusing to drive her. Of ignoring her. Of answering the phone when the hospital called and knowing I should have been there.””
Mariah covered her mouth.
“I have replayed that night a thousand times. If I'd driven her, perhaps she would still be alive. If I'd listened, perhaps none of this would have happened.””
Daniel wanted to be angry with her. Part of him was angry.
But he could see his sister as she had been two years ago: exhausted, grieving, trying to look strong for everyone while quietly falling apart herself.
He sat opposite her.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“I'm not saying that to hurt you. I'm saying it because we've all been making decisions in the dark.””
Mariah nodded.
Daniel opened the envelope.
Inside was a single folded page, written in Claire’s familiar handwriting.
Daniel,
If this reaches you, I need you to know that I tried to protect Lily before I ran out of time.
Vanessa is not the person she wants you to believe she is. I cannot tell whether she wants a place in our family because she loves you or because she believes our family can give her something she wants.
I have seen her copy documents she had no reason to handle. I have heard her talk about Lily's future as if our daughter were an obstacle to be moved out of the way.
I asked her to stop. She told me I was being unreasonable.
I am frightened, Daniel, and I hate admitting it.
If I cannot finish what I started, look for the blue folder in the locked drawer. Do not sign anything Vanessa brings you without having your own lawyer examine it.
And please, whatever happens, never let Lily believe she has to become smaller to make someone else feel important.
She deserves to grow up without apologizing for being loved.
Claire.
Daniel read the final paragraph again.
His throat tightened.
Claire had written those words only days before she died.
He folded the letter carefully.
“What blue folder?”” he asked.
Mariah shook her head.
“I never saw one.””
“Vanessa had the key to Claire's desk. She knew about the letter. She knew where the documents were kept.””
Daniel looked toward the bedroom door.
“And now she's trying to send Lily away.””
Mariah rose.
“Then we have to stop her.””
“First, I need to find out what was in that folder.””
He returned to the study and opened the locked desk again.
This time, he searched every drawer, every compartment, every stack of papers. Property records. Insurance documents.
Old photographs. Copies of Lily's birth certificate and medical records.
No blue folder.
He checked the cabinet beneath the desk.
Nothing.
Then he noticed an empty rectangular space at the bottom of a drawer, outlined by a thin layer of dust.
Something had been stored there for a long time.
Something had recently been removed.
Daniel straightened.
“Vanessa.””
Mariah appeared in the doorway.
“What?””
“She took it.””
“How do you know?””
He pointed to the dust mark.
“Because it was here, and now it isn't.””
Mariah looked ill.
“What was in it?””
“I intend to find out.””
He pulled out his phone and called the family attorney, Richard Hayes.
Richard answered on the fourth ring.
“Daniel? Everything all right? I was just about to head to the estate.””
“Did Claire ever ask you to prepare any documents involving Lily's guardianship?””
There was a pause.
“Yes,” Richard replied.
“She asked me to review the existing arrangements a few weeks before she died.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“What arrangements?””
“Claire was concerned about who would have access to Lily's trust and who could make decisions if you became incapacitated. She wanted very strict protections.””
“Did she name Vanessa?””
“No. Quite the opposite. She specifically asked that Vanessa not be given access to Lily's accounts or be authorized to make financial decisions on her behalf.””
Daniel felt his stomach twist.
“Did you prepare a blue folder?””
Another pause.
“Yes. I delivered it to Claire personally. She said she'd keep it in a secure place until she could discuss it with you.””
“Did you ever get it back?””
“No.””
Richard's voice sharpened.
“Daniel, what's happened?””
“My fiancée has submitted forged paperwork to a residential school to have my daughter placed there tomorrow.””
Silence.
Then Richard said, “Do not sign anything. Do not let her remove any documents from the property. I'll contact the appropriate people and come to the estate.””
Daniel ended the call.
For a moment, he simply stared at the phone.
Vanessa had known Claire's concerns.
She had possessed the key to Claire's desk.
She had found the letter.
And she had tried to make sure Lily was gone before Daniel understood what his wife had been trying to protect.
Mariah touched his arm.
“We have to tell the police.””
“We will.””
“What if Vanessa leaves?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
“Then she will have to explain why.””
He walked back into the corridor.
The housekeeper stood outside Lily's sitting room, her hands clasped nervously.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Where's my daughter?””
The housekeeper glanced toward the front hall.
“Miss Cole came to see her a few minutes ago.””
Daniel's blood turned cold.
“What?””
“She said she wanted to apologize. She said you had agreed that Lily should leave with her for a little while.””
Mariah hurried past him.
“Where are they?””
The housekeeper pointed toward the rear staircase.
Daniel ran.
He reached the sitting room in seconds.
The door stood open.
Lily's pink cardigan lay abandoned on the sofa.
Her stuffed rabbit was on the floor.
And through the window, Daniel saw a black car pulling away from the side entrance.
Vanessa was in the passenger seat.
Lily was beside her.
Daniel sprinted toward the front hall.
“STOP THAT CAR!””
The security guard at the entrance turned in surprise.
Daniel shoved through the doors and raced down the steps.
The car had almost reached the estate gates when the guards moved to block the exit.
It stopped.
Vanessa stepped out, pulling Lily behind her by the hand.
The little girl was crying again.
“Daddy!””
Daniel ran to them.
He lifted Lily into his arms and held her close.
“What are you doing?”” he demanded.
Vanessa's expression was brittle.
“She was frightened. I was taking her somewhere quiet.””
“You told her I had agreed to let you take her away?””
“I was going to explain everything.””
“You do not get to take my daughter anywhere.””
Vanessa looked past him at the guards.
Then she leaned close enough that only Daniel could hear her.
“You should have left the past alone.””
He stared at her.
“What's in the blue folder, Vanessa?””
Her face changed.
For one brief second, the mask disappeared completely.
Daniel saw naked fear.
Then she stepped backward.
“You have no idea what that folder contains.””
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa glanced at Lily, who was clinging to her father's neck.
“Not in front of her.””
Daniel tightened his arms around his daughter.
“Whatever it is, she's already been hurt enough.””
Vanessa's mouth trembled.
“You don't understand. If the truth comes out, you won't just lose me.””
May you like
She looked at Lily.
“You could lose everything.””
